christmas: Old-Fashioned Christmas in Olde Town Arvada - 12/06/12 03:22 AM

I finally made it to the old-fashioned Christmas event that Olde Town Arvada calls, Lagniappe.  I've written about it for the past few years, but this year the weather was so nice and I have two grandsons to enjoy it with, so I refused to miss it!
The highlight of Lagniappe for all of us was the lighting of the Christmas tree in the town square. Before the lighting we milled around, chatting with people we came across who we knew and a few we didn't know, enjoying hot spiced cider, and trying to ignore the luscious aromas drifing over … (3 comments)

Olde Town Arvada is getting their much anticipated Christmas events onto the calendar - Lagniappe 2012 and the town square tree lighting have been announced for Tuesday, December 4th.  Festivities include carolers and a visit from Santa Clause, and I hear the fire department puts on a chili cookoff - starting at 6:00 pm.
I know in the past there's also been carriage rides, but I haven't seen them announced yet.  I'll update this post when I find out.

christmas: How Arvada Christmas Trees Can Live Forever - 01/07/12 03:08 AM

It’s true Christmas trees can live forever – it’s all about the power of mulch, baby!

The City of Arvada had drop off sites for post-Christmas trees, as did most of the communities nearby.  Now, those trees have been shredded into mulch and are ready to be picked up and used by enterprising local gardeners and landscapers.

The weather for the past couple of days had us all thinking about spring time, but now it’s back to business January style. So it might be hard to think about doing something good for your summer gardens. So try … (0 comments)

christmas: A White Christmas Between Denver and Boulder - 12/22/11 10:32 AM
If you don't live in Colorado you might think, "What's the big deal - don't they always have a white Christmas between Denver and Boulder?"
Short answer - no. In fact, we rarely have a white Christmas.  'White' is generally classified as enough snow on the ground that you can't see grass. And while we may have plenty of snow before Christmas, it usually gets warm enough to melt most of it in a couple of days.
But after today's one-foot snowfall, and with cool temperatures coming up until Christmas, we'll have plenty of snow on the ground for a sparkling … (0 comments)

christmas: December's Season of Celebrations and Sharing - Apex Santa House - 12/19/11 08:49 AM
The Apex Center's Santa House is in full swing for its seventh year.  Santa House is a place where adults con come choose gifts for their children from donated items.  Duane Johnson (director for the Arvada Food Bank) and Bill Johnson came up with the idea.
Santa House is organized by the Arvada-Wheat Ridge Service Ambassadors for Youth, an affiliation of all the Arvada and Wheat Ridge service clubs and Red Rocks Community College.
Volunteers work with children in economically challenged Arvada elementary schools and enlisted the schools' help in identifying needy families and children.  In 2010 the Santa House served … (0 comments)

christmas: December's Season of Celebrations and Sharing - Food Drive - 12/18/11 05:43 AM
I can't speak for all Safeway stores, but the one near my house (80th & Wadsworth) has got a great idea going, to  help stock food banks 'serving the local community'.  I know Arvada has a nice, big food bank, and they will always take donations.
Here's how it works - grab a bag full of food from the display located near the door and pay $10 for it at the register, then leave the bag in a barrel located near the door.
Easy-peasy!
Interesting personal note: I was willing to do this bag thing, partly because there was no bell-ringer … (6 comments)

christmas: December's Season of Celebrations and Sharing - Convoy of Hope, Joplin - 12/17/11 01:00 PM
Convoy of Hope is collecting supplies for the folks of Joplin, Missouri who lost so much in last May's devastating tornadoes. Convoy of Hope has been helping provide homes, electricity, and food since that time, and hasn't forgotten about the need still lingering in Joplin, even though most Americans haven't given Joplin a second thought for months now.
A Christmas party is being held tonight, sponsored by Heaven Fest, and they are asking people to bring canned food for Convoy of Hope for admission.  The party is at Northern Hills Church, and a truck will be collecting the food on the west side of the church. … (3 comments)

christmas: December's Season of Celebration and Sharing - Christmas Party for PTSD Sufferers - 12/17/11 12:14 PM
The Colorado Patriot Guard Riders are hosting a Christmas party for sufferers of post-traumatic stress disorder at the Veteran's Administration hospital in Denver, Colorado, on December 22.  The CPGR is a special bunch of folks in my heart for two personal reasons:
- I know Georgia Gronquist from church, and she is an exceptionally wonderful lady, Georgia doesn't ride a motorcycle, but she takes the bus then rides her wheelchair in missions at Fort Logan and in parades.  She feels it's important to honor the military folks.  You go, Georgia!
- the Patriot Guard stood up at my good friends' funeral three years … (4 comments)

christmas: Extend the Life of your Christmas Tree with LED Lights - 11/30/10 07:26 AM
I'm one of those people who always insist on having a real Christmas tree. I want the whole experience - going out to pick the tree in the sunny yet chilly Colorado weather, getting it home on top of the car, listening to my husband grumble while he gets it in the stand, then enjoying the heartening scent while decorating it and for weeks afterward.
We usually get our tree the first weekend in December, and we buy it from a local nursery called, O'Tooles. It's true you can get less expensive trees, but O'Tooles keeps them in water. (Yes - … (3 comments)

christmas: $220 in Savings is Almost Enough to Fulfill My Alpaca Dream - 11/21/10 06:13 AM
The question was posed, what could you do with $220 in savings? I like to think of ways I could use 'found' money that would make a real difference, which is where the alpaca comes in.
I was first introduced to the beautiful and gentle alpaca when vacationing in Oregon one recent autumn. There's something called the "Fruit Loop" in the Hood River area, where orchards and farms are open to visitors. One place we stopped had alpacas, and a yarn shop. I noticed a beautiful spinning wheel and asked the owner about it.
She said it was made to fold … (2 comments)

christmas: Make Lagniappe Part of Your Christmas Festivities in Arvada CO - 10/27/10 08:36 AM
Have you heard of Lagniappe? (Pronounced lawn-yahp)
Once a year, Olde Town Arvada businesses thank their loyal customers with small gifts. Some merchants will give a small token to anyone who stops in, such as cookies or hot chocolate.  Some merchants will give small gifts with a purchase.
I looked up the word, 'lagniappe', and it has roots in French, Spanish and Creole tradition. Mark Twain wrote about this word in 'Life on the Mississippi'.  Mr. Twain said it's pronounced 'lanny-yap', though.
And now - it's an annual event in the small town where I live! Mr. Twain wrote, "It has … (10 comments)

christmas: Enjoy 'A Christmas Carol' at The Arvada Center This Year - 10/25/10 10:49 AM
The Arvada Center Presents 'A Christmas Carol'
I've seen several presentations of the classic, A Christmas Carol, including a puppet show that was downright eerie. I think a musical version sounds like an intriguing new twist.
And the fact that the Arvada Center is where I can see this musical makes it even more enticing. Everything I've seen there was done really well, and I enjoy attending shows there better than at venues in many large cities.
I'm writing this post when we haven't even gotten through Halloween yet, because I know how quickly things start to happen once the holiday season … (7 comments)

christmas: Most 'whacked' Christmas gift - 11/29/09 01:50 AM
I rarely write completely unlrelated-to-real-estate posts, but I thought of the AR group, "Whacked", when I saw this item in the Solutions catalog.
A digital camera on a pet collar. You set it to snap pictures every few minutes, up to 40. So you know what your pet was up to all day, of course!
And only $49.95 + shipping.
Wow - I think I'll take another look at that World Vision gift catalog!  With the kind of junk retailers offer at Christmas, I think most people really don't need to buy anything at all.
This is my dog, Daphne. She's … (18 comments)

christmas: Give Meaningful Christmas Gifts - 10/15/09 10:04 AM
Every year, as Christmas approaches, I hear people complain about the commercialism of it, or state the obvious truth that most of the gifts they're giving aren't even needed, and how hard it is to find gifts for people who 'have everything' or don't want anything.  Well, stop complaining and make a meaningful change!
There's a thousand ways to do it, but one way that gets me excited and happy is to scour the World Vision Gift Catalog and pick some way to make a huge impact in the life of someone who I'll never even meet. Maybe it could help … (6 comments)
