denver to boulder: Best Places Arvada CO - Arvada Beer Company - 12/07/11 03:35 PM
I've been to breweries before, that were basically a restaurant that served their own beers. So it was a pleasant surprise when I stopped in at Arvada Beer Company a couple of days ago, to find a unique place sure to become a well-loved favorite hangout for locals.
The owner, Cary Floyd, took a few minutes to chat with me, and tell me about their fun venue.
Located in the heart of Olde Town Arvada, at the corner of Olde Wadsworth and Grandview (just across the street from the Archive Room), Arvada Beer Company names their brews after well-known local historic … (2 comments)

I’m writing this paragraph after just learning that Prop 103, increased taxes for school funding, did not pass. Whether you were happy to get that news or not, we all still have the opportunity to help our schools.  Parents these days have a lot more expenses for their children’s education than we … (2 comments)

denver to boulder: Arvada - A Best Place to Live Denver to Boulder - 11/15/11 04:31 PM
Definitely put Arvada on your 'Best Place to Live' list if you're moving to the Denver/Boulder vicinity. One reason - Olde Town Arvada.
Driving through Olde Town Arvada last week, I had to smile about the surprising mix of businesses.  One thing I like about historic Arvada is that it's not all brand-new and spiffy, a 'fake' town created by a master plan designed to win awards.  Don't get me wrong - I know people love places like that, and I'm glad they're popping up everywhere.
But back to Olde Town!
Arvada grew up around the town center at Grandview … (2 comments)

denver to boulder: Fall Season of Miracles - Life, Strength, and Love in Full Bloom - 10/30/11 01:49 PM
The POSITIVE ATTITUDE for the Weary Soul group gives you the opportunity to share the miracles in your life during this fall season with a creative writing challenge . Join in on the challenge with the  FALL SEASON OF MIRACLES CONTEST | Positive Attitude for the Weary Soul Group
My fall miracle actually began in September of 2010. My husband James and I were vacationing in Maine. We had worried about going, since our daughter, Amanda, had a 9-month old baby and was struggling with how to deal with some devastating news she had recently received.
Then, a phone call - Amanda was … (7 comments)

denver to boulder: Lion and Tigers and Bears ... in Colorado! - 09/05/11 08:02 PM
Yesterday the hubby and I took a quick trip to the northeast of Denver for our first visit to The Wild Animal Sanctuary.  It was an amazing experience, I'm so glad we finally 'discovered' this place after living in Arvada for so many years.
There are hundreds of lions, tigers, bears, servals, cougar, wolves, and more. I found www.WildAnimalSanctuary.org when I searched for 'Things to do in Colorado'. I noticed the recommendation to visit in the evening, especially when they are cooling off from summer's heat.  So that's what we did.
Arriving about 5:30, we stayed until the Sanctuary closed at … (5 comments)

denver to boulder: La Patisserie Francaise Blesses Arvada with Crepes Al Fresco - 06/28/11 10:13 AM
Last Saturday, I had to run in to Target for a baby shower gift - you know, the Target right next to the French bakery, La Patisserie Francaise, at 80th and Wadsworth? It just happens to be right across the street from my Pomona Lakes neighborhood.
Anyway, as I stepped out of my car the most wonderful aroma greeted me.
Turns out La Patisserie Francaise was selling fresh-made-to-order crepes out in the sunshine and fresh air. All I had to do was place an order, go inside to pay, come back out and people-watch from the comfort of the sidewalk seating … (2 comments)

denver to boulder: Gardens Hold the Promise of Beauty - 06/26/11 11:19 AM
Gardens don't always look great right from the start.

Every year, we have to wait.

Still, like these clematis buds, we know they hold the promise of beauty to come.

They're not gorgeous right now, but in just a few days ...

Wow!

Time to sit in the glider and enjoy their outrageous perfection!

I think that's why so many of us love to garden. In good times and not-so-good times, we know something's … (2 comments)

denver to boulder: High Plains Gardeners - Put Tender Plants in the Ground This Weekend - 05/07/11 11:21 AM
High plains gardeners have many traditions, like gardeners in other parts of the world do. One high plains gardening tradition is that Mother's Day is the time to put in those tender plants like tomatoes and peppers.
That's why I figured this weekend would be crazy at the garden center, and I tried to get out to buy my plants before the Mother's Day weekend arrived. Alas, I didn't make it out to O'Tooles until Friday evening, and the crowds were already there, hotly pursuing the plants they just had to have. I'm sure many of them were for Mother's … (4 comments)

denver to boulder: Spoil Mom at Oasis Day Spa in Arvada - 05/06/11 10:09 PM

My first day spa experience was last weekend at Oasis Day Spa in Arvada.  (My daughter thought last weekend was Mother's Day, so I got my gift early!)
What a lovely place!
My first thought while enjoying the soothing decor was, "Places like this must be why women live longer!"
My daughter and I had a great time getting spoiled, but I have to say just as we were about to leave a man came in, his wife had given him a pedicure for a birthday present. Of course, lots of men go to Oasis Day Spa for massages too.

denver to boulder: As Funds for Colorado Schools Drop, Support Teachers is Desperately Needed - 05/04/11 09:23 PM
Colorado, like most states, is having a tough time making ends meet, forcing difficult decisions. Anyone who's been paying even the slightest attention knows large cuts were made to our schools.
I don't have school-aged kids any more, but I do know a lot of wonderful folks who live or teach in Arvada. So it feels quite personal to hear about the sacrifices these dedicated, generous people make.
So I was happy to read a Letter to the Editor in the Arvada Press dated April 21, 2011 about www.DonorsChoose.org. DonorsChoose.org is an online charity that makes it easy for anyone … (3 comments)

denver to boulder: Idea Book for Vintage Arvada Homes - 05/03/11 11:17 PM
If you live in one of Arvada's neighborhoods born in the era of WWII, you probably know that a lot of 'remodeling' has been done to the homes there over time.  Not all of it good.
The City of Arvada, in partnership with Historic Denver, Inc. and graduate architectural students at the University of Colorado has been working on a couple of pattern books for remodeling pre-war and post-war era homes in Arvada, and now one of them has been released.
Pattern and Design Idea Book for Post-War Homes is yours with a click, the book for pre-war era homes will … (6 comments)

denver to boulder: Frost-free High Plains Gardening - 05/01/11 08:57 PM
Newcomers to high plains gardening may be concerned about how to garden when killing frosts can come both early and late in the season.
This table is from Colorado State University Extension's fact sheet: Colorado Gardening, Challenge to Newcomers. It shows the average number of frost-free days in a year for several locations throughout the state. Denver's magic number is 155, while the highest in the state - Grand Junction - is 183.
Because of a measly 30 more days, people called the Grand Junction area the 'banana belt'. Some years, I'm pretty jealous of those 30 days, but I can … (0 comments)

denver to boulder: Where Once There was a Garden ... - 04/20/11 04:16 PM
When I saw this greenhouse at a foreclosed home in Arvada last week, I knew that once upon a time a gardener lived there.  The kind of gardener that went beyond digging in the dirt, and invested the time and expense to build this structure. I saw more signs of the kindred spirit who tended this place in the carefully arranged beds, and even an abandoned trowel.
One of the distressing parts of being a real estate agent is showing an abandoned house, and knowing it was once a beloved home. Being a gardener, I feel the same way about seeing … (6 comments)
