gardening: Expecting a Glorious Spring in Colorado's Front Range Gardens - 04/02/12 02:11 PM
One of the frustrating things about gardening here, in Denver to Boulder's front range, is just when the tulips are at their most glorious, we get hit with a heat wave. The tulips end up wilted and languishing before their time, then we seem to go back to milder weather for a couple of weeks. This year (2012) we've had a very dry and warm spring. Several days in the 80s in fact, so our heat wave was early. The tulips are just beginning to bloom. The great news for this spring's beautiful tulip parade, is that the weather has cooled

gardening: Gardens Hold the Promise of Beauty - 06/26/11 11:19 AM
Gardens don't always look great right from the start. Every year, we have to wait. Still, like these clematis buds, we know they hold the promise of beauty to come. They're not gorgeous right now, but in just a few days ... Wow! Time to sit in the glider and enjoy their outrageous perfection! I think that's why so many of us love to garden. In good times and not-so-good times, we know something's

gardening: Coleus Gives Color to Shady High Plains Gardens - 04/24/11 02:34 PM
If you have a shady spot, you know it’s not easy to make it pop. This year, try coleus! These photos are from a recent to Timberline Gardens in Arvada, CO. I was captured by the variety and colors of coleus that they had on display. Coleus are annuals, they will die when the frost gets to them. But in the meantime, keep them watered and they will reward with a season of color. Coleus do bloom, but the flowers aren’t the star – the amazing painted leaves are! When you plant coleus, add some humus to your soil (I like

gardening: Gardening Classes at Timberline Gardens in Arvada CO - 03/28/11 08:43 PM
I've gardened for many years, 17 of those in the tough and unique high country of Colorado, between Denver and Boulder. And yet, there's always more to learn. Plus, taking classes is a great way to meet like-minded gardening folks! I got so excited just reading the classes offered by Timberline Gardens, located at 11700 W. 58th Ave. in Arvada, CO. I've always loved Timberline for great soil, stone, mulch, and compost. They have a huge nursery that's a lot of fun to visit. The list of Timberline Garden's upcoming classes is long. gardening: Between Denver and Boulder - Things to Do (Iris Farm) - 06/05/08 01:22 PM
Last weekend I got together with some friends and headed west from Arvada to Boulder to get some beautiful, sweet-scented additions for our gardens. The iris farm was our destination, it was about a 25 minute drive, and we had a great time. You get to wander the fields, poking your nose into all your favorites, as long as you want to. Then, you grab a digging fork and a bag and go to it. They'll help you dig if you need it. They have some fields with named varieties and some where you just get whatever happens to be there. They also
