Austin, Chicago, New York--all cities you can easily imagine being great places for young adults. But, one place you might easily overlook that Kiplinger did not: Kansas City, Missouri! If you are familiar with KC, then probably not a surprise--we have a great balance of affordable housing & low cost of living, businesses and business opportunities, and, our fair share of arts/culture/nightlife/entertainment (More so than the article would seem to indicate!).
One correction: Though light rail has been explored here on many occassions, NOTHING under construction at this time.

Kansas City Ranked 1st as Mortgage-friendly by Forbes! - 07/17/10 12:24 PM
Though the KC-area market has experienced a slow down post-the April 30th Tax Credit Expire--like in numerous places across the country--we, by far, still have a rock-solid Real Estate Market, with some great Buying opportunities out there!
 
Also, were you aware (BEFORE you saw this headline), that the KC-metro was recently ranked TOPS by Forbes as Mortgage-friendly for Barrowers?!!! Surprised? Shouldn't be--there is a lot to love about living in the heartland of America!!! Here is the complete Best for Barrowers article:
