Denver Rec Center in Stapleton FAQ
For some reason, I have received numerous calls in which the caller thought they were calling the new Denver Rec Center located in the Stapleton neighborhood.
I guess the good news is, when people are Googling the rec center they are finding the MoveToStapleton.info blog. The bad news is, they are confusing my number with that of the actual rec center, and clearly this blog isn't providing the information for which people are searching.
So I have decided to post the answers to some of the questions I have been asked and I will try … (0 comments)

stapleton: Move to Stapleton: A resident's Realtor's view of the Stapleton community! - 12/03/10 03:47 AM

I moved to Stapleton 4-years ago.  Check back with Katie Knop over the next 10-days to see how the Knop Home Team became the Stapleton Home Team.
I know I will.

Move to Stapleton: A resident Realtor's view of the Stapleton community!
An associate of mine at the office is contemplating making the move to Stapleton.  He asked me a month or so ago if I liked it, "Of course I like it, actually I love it!"  that was enough for him.  He didn't need further confirmation.  Until a month later, " So now tell me, do you really like … (0 comments)

stapleton: I'm Dreaming of a Green Christmas (Part XXIII) - 12/23/09 04:05 AM
While I am dreaming of a Green Christmas, many others are still dreaming of a White Christmas.  In fact, it is actually snowing right now in Denver.  So as I was shoveling my sidewalk I had an idea for today's post:Tip #23:  Don't use gas powered snow blowersDid you know that a snow blower emits one pound of CO2 for every hour that it runs?  That's equivalent to driving 70 miles in your car.  Of course electric snow blowers don't have any emissions of their own, but somewhere there is a power plant generating that electricity.  And more than likely, in … (2 comments)

As the big day approaches and you are rushing to complete your last minute shopping, where do you turn to find that must have gift?Tip #22:  Shop Craigslist Just about anything you might need can be found on Craigslist.  But you might be thinking, what's green about Craigslist?  The answer, you will be "recycling" a gift. Also, most likely the gift will now have packaging that will end up in the landfill, and the seller will be local which will cut down on the carbon footprint and cost of shipping.

The holidays are often filled with food, but how often do you consider the composition of the containers in which you store your food?Tip #21:  Avoid plastic storage containersSenators Schumer and Gillibrand in New York are the latest to take up the cause against bisphenol A (BPA), but they are not the only ones.  My family became aware of the dangers of BPA, a synthetic hormone linked to cancer, as many others did, with the birth of our first child.  In fact, I see BPA-free labels most often on baby bottles and food containers that need to be heated up. So … (2 comments)

As you are planning your holiday meals, not only should you consider the source of your ingredients (organic, local, etc.) but also your cookware.  Certain chemicals can leach out of plastics and metals and get into your food.Tip #20:  Cook without TeflonAnodized aluminum is a great alternative to cookware made with Teflon.  One of my favorite pans is a heavy, oven safe Calphalon frying pan, which I use in almost every meal I prepare.  However, there are other alternatives like stainless steel and ceramic, which can be treated with a non-stick spray to make clean-up a breeze.Or you can go "old … (3 comments)

Being a Realtor also means being a business owner and today I can across a site that sells eco-friendly promotional items.  So,Tip #19:  Businesses can use "green" give-aways The holidays are a great time to build your brand, and many companies do so with gift baskets.  So why not include some useful items that are also green, like the USB flash drive made of bamboo?  Or something they will use every day and remind them of you, for example a recycled and re-usable water bottle. Additionally, the company selling these items (Motivators) will plant a tree if the items you purchase … (0 comments)

Besides giving gift cards, which could be used to purchase items that will eventually end up in a landfill, how about this?Tip #18:  Gift a sustainable donation
Make a donation to an organization that promotes environmental issues on behalf of friends and family.  Kids would love it if you adopted a snow leopard for them, or maybe an Emperor Penguin.  Another great charity is the Environmental Defense Fund, which is offering to match any donation dollar for dollar through the end of the year.
As you can imagine, the list of viable charities is endless.  So pick one and go for … (0 comments)

How about a green holiday tip that will actually help reduce your stress as well as your carbon footprint.Tip #17:  Gift Cards are GreenWhile at the local grocery store recently I took a look at the number of gift cards that are available and the number was astounding.  There are cards for restaurants, clothing stores, home improvement stores, electronic stores, etc., and cards for each in various denominations.  I could have picked up a card for just about everyone I know all in one trip. This would greatly reduce my carbon footprint in reducing the number of places I would need … (0 comments)

Earlier in the season I spoke about the energy efficiency of LED lights.  However, there is another way to reduce the amount of energy used by your holiday lights. Tip #16:  Avoid the phantom load Even when you turn off your lights, or any electric device, unless you pull the plug from the outlet there is still energy being consumed.  By some estimates, this use of standby power account for as much as 5% of residential energy consumption, costing consumers at much as $3B annually.
Like many of these tips, this is something that you can do year round to save!

Today's tip is in the spirit of President Obama's speech at Home Depot,Tip #15:  Winterize your home I can't say it any better that the President: Retrofitting your home "is one of the fastest, easiest and cheapest things we can do to put Americans back to work while saving money and reducing harmful emissions." So give yourself, your friends, and your family gift cards to your local hardware store, and start saving some money and the planet.

How about a little holiday shopping that will also benefit homeless pets? Facebook fans can save $5 off orders of $25 or more by entering "HOLIDAY" at check out. But this offer ends at 11:59 PM PST today!

To me this is a unique opportunity to address many issues in which I am concerned.  As an owner of only rescued pets I support the Animal Rescue Site; who in turn supports Petfinders.com.
But this sale is also promoting green products, my other passion and the topic of my "Dreaming of a Green Christmas" series.

There are many holiday traditions that in and of themselves are great contributors to landfills.  For example, I recently heard that 2.7 billion cards will be sent between Thanksgiving and New Years.  Once solutions,Tip #14:  Send E-Cards As the name implies, E-Cards.com has an abundance of electronic holiday card from which to choose (many of them free).  They also prominently display the environmental causes they support right on their homepage.  So not only are you avoiding the potential that your paper card will end up in the landfill, you will indirectly be contributing to a green cause. However, there are many … (0 comments)

Not only should we think about the environmental impact associates with the production of the gifts we give, but we also need to consider the impact of their continued use.  One solution is,Tip #13:  Use rechargeable batteries But how do you avoid the disappointment of a child who has just opened his present only to be told that it won't work until the day after Christmas because the batteries the toy needs won't be charged until then?  Don't worry, rechargeable batteries have come a long way.  The latest technology is Nickle-Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) and these batteries come out package fully charged … (3 comments)

While the title of this series is "I'm Dreaming of a Green Christmas", as the first day of Hanukkah comes to an end I thought it would be nice to point out that no matter what holiday you are celebrating this time of year there are ways to be green.Tip #12:  Give Fair Trade ChocolateAlong with the Menorah, the Dreidle, and the latkes; Gelt (or chocolate coins) is a Hanukkah tradition.  But who doesn't love chocolate in their stocking.  So if you plan on giving candy during the holiday season, try to do so with sweet that are made with fair … (1 comments)

Here is tip that's not only good for the environment, but good for the sanity of those whom you are giving gifts:Tip #10:  Avoid the clamshell Electronics are a big hit over the holidays, but the packaging in which they are delivered is not.  I don't know how many of my daughter's toys come in hard plastic clamshells, that once opened have razor sharp edges.  Or dolls that are fastened down inside the box with a dozen or more steel twist ties. Amazon has at least recognized this problem and has launched it's Frustration-Free Packaging to help combat what they call … (0 comments)

I understand that yesterday's tip was not for everyone, as potted trees do have their challenges.  So, another option for a real tree that has a less negative impact on the environment:Tip #9:  Find an organic Christmas treeGreenPromise.com can help, or check with some of the growers at your local farmer's market to see if they know anyone growing Christmas trees organically.  In fact, the local farmers may be able to direct you to an organic AND local tree (hey, two tips in one). But why would you want an organic tree when the guy on the corner lot is so … (1 comments)

Unfortunately, the next tip does not help those of you who are owners/fans of artificial Christmas trees.  But if you traditionally get a real tree every year try this: Tip #8:  Get a potted Christmas tree Potted trees are still alive and can be moved outside and left in the pot until next year.  As the tree grows and becomes too big to bring inside, it can be planted in your yard or donated to a school or park. In fact, there are places like Adopt-A-Christmas Tree that will do all the work for you.  Or places like The Living … (2 comments)

You spend how much time wrapping gifts so that the paper can be torn off in a matter of seconds.  So, Tip #7:  Use Eco-friendly Gift WrappingsMost traditional wrapping paper is made from "virgin" paper stock.  In other words, a tree must be chopped down for this paper to be made.  Then the paper is typically dyed or colored with ink.  Hopefully you saved any traditional paper you received last year to be re-used this holiday season.  But if not, there are many vendors (like The Daily Green selling wrapping paper made out of recycled materials.  Either way, secure the … (4 comments)

What would the holidays be with out travel?  But how can you reduce your carbon footprint on your way to grandma's house?Tip #6:  Purchase Carbon OffsetsNot sure how much carbon you are using, or how to go about purchasing offsets?  CarbonFund.org has a simple calculator to help you with both.  It doesn't matter if you are traveling by plains, trains or automobiles, CarbonFund will make the necessary calculations.  For example, if I was to fly to Phoenix to visit my Mom for Christmas, it would cost me $5.89. Can you believe that?  Only $5.89.  And I can direct CarbonFund to … (0 comments)
