Before I get into this post, let me give you a little background. I served 31 years as an educator. I am certified to teach elementary (1 - 8) and high school business (7 - 12). During my 31 years in public education I have taught elementary school, middle school, and high school. I got my masters in education administration and served as a principal at the elementary and middle school levels. As an elementary teacher it was not uncommon to get Christmas gifts from your students on the last day of school before winter break. The Christmas season is a time when children become excited about having time off school, celebrating the holidays, and especially look forward to Christmas day. "Value Added" is a statistical analysis of student progress from year-to-year. Presently, "value added" measures are used to determine student growth in reading and math in grades 4 - 8. You will see a "plus sign" on the value added section of your district's report card (students progressed above expected growth levels), a "check mark" (students progressed at expected growth levels), or a "minus sign" (students performed below expected growth levels). Your school district/building will be rated as one of the following: Excellent Effective Continuous Improvement Academic Watch Academic Emergency The above ratings will be based on the number of indicators met and/or your district's performance index score. *10 point increase over 2 years with at least 3 points in the most recent year **Schools and Districts that miss AYP for three consecutive years in more than one student group in the most recent year can be rated no higher than Continuous Improvement. Districts must meet all AYP goals in order to be in compliance with Federal standards for education including subgroups as well as the overall student population. The performance index measure is one of several measures used to determine school building and district Report Card Designations. The possible designations and the performance index score for each is listed below. There are 30 areas that serve as the state's indicators for school district successful performance. In order to get credit for passing each of the indicators, a school district must meet the state's goal for each indicator. The district's local report card will identify how many of those indicators a school district was successful in meeting the state's goal. Ohio students are required to pass the Ohio Graduation Test (OGT) in order to earn a high school diploma. The test assesses student abilities in the following areas: Reading Writing Mathematics Science Social studies In Ohio, the OGT measures a student's ability in core areas (listed above) insures that Ohio high school graduates are proficient up to the tenth grade level. As in all levels of Ohio testing, students have more than one opportunity to take and pass the test.
