maryland: Baseball Swings into Waldorf, Maryland - 12/03/07 03:58 PM
Further proof that Waldorf is not as remote as some people seem to think it is:  We're getting our own Atlantic League Baseball Team (*insert cheering here*)!    I know, it's not THAT exciting, but I am pretty happy that it's happening, nonetheless.  I've known it was in the works for years, but I refused to believe it until it actually happened.  They've yet to sign any players, but the stadium is built (I've seen it with my own eyes!), and they signed the manager, Butch Hobson (Butch Who???).     Apparently he managed the Boston Red Sox at some … (3 comments)

maryland: MORTGAGE SCAM ON NBC NIGHTLY NEWS! - 12/02/07 03:21 PM
I'm so relieved to see this story making national news!! It seems that Joy Jackson, aka "Night Rider" to all her friends back at the strip club, was recently featured on MSNBC Nightly News (video link).  In addition, there seems to be a growing number of people interest in her and her partners current whereabouts.  Funny how people frown upon $800,000 weddings when the bride may have cheated them out of their home equity.  I highly doubt her proceeds as an, ahem, "entertainer" managed to pay for Ms. Patti LaBelle's presence there! (I also heard she gave away a Porsche, and … (6 comments)

maryland: FSBO Marketing Tips - 12/01/07 07:23 AM
I've heard some outrageous horror stories from people trying to FSBO in Southern Maryland.  I've heard rumors of real estate agents telling homeowners "There's no way you're going to sell your home without me" or "Selling FSBO is the stupidest thing you can do", or "*insert your own snooty Realtor comment here*"
Let me first apologize if you are trying to sell yourself and have gotten comments like this from an unfriendly Realtor.  You'll find I won't make such childish taunts, Promise!

maryland: Swan Point Development *Finally* Moving Forward - 10/31/07 09:10 AM
I've got some news for all you Charles County residents out there...  The development project in Issue, MD at Swan Point may finally been moving forward!  For you golfers out there, you know how challenging the par 72 course there can be, and now it looks like they're getting ready to begin the second half of the development that they started 20 years ago!       The second phase includes 1,500 new homes, a hotel, marina, and a dedicated 55+ community!  Tentatively dubbed "Villages of Swan Point", this 900 acre project has been on the books since 1986.  Brookfield … (0 comments)

maryland: Real Estate Scam deepening with Metro Dream Homes - 10/30/07 07:43 AM
There's a front page article in today's Fredericksburg, VA Free Lance-Star.  It seems that the Attorney General has established that the company is in debt by at least $300,000,000!   Their assets have been frozen and they're trying to find the money trail, but so far only $150,000 has been found so far.  They did jail the company president, Andy Williams, but it is not clear if he is still in jail at this time.  It turns out that Mr. Williams had another ponzi scheme shut down back in 2001, had been barred from selling securities, AND had not properly registered … (0 comments)

maryland: Builder comes to the rescue! - 10/30/07 02:15 AM
I can't tell you how much I love hearing news like this!  It seems that a woman named Delores Smith in Accokeek, MD, who has worked as a foster mother to over 125 children, is on the right path to getting her home re-built.  She was evicted in 2003 after the house was condemned due to an oil leak.  Turns out the oil company was found negligent but no damages were awarded.  Since then she has been living in a poorly insulated farm house that her parents owned.
Fortunately, Terry Barnes, a local homebuilder, heard the story and has stepped … (7 comments)

maryland: METRO DREAM HOMES: If it sounds too good to be true.... it probably IS! - 10/28/07 12:27 PM
Just another local real estate scam that is getting lots of attention, particularly from the Attorney General in Maryland AND Virginia.  Essentially the accusation goes something like this:  Metro Dream Homes convinced people to buy in to their investment program (about 10%-15% of the value of their home) and MDH would "invest" that money and pay the mortgage on the property in full.  They claimed to be able to pay the mortgage off in 5-7 years so that people could buy MUCH bigger houses than they could really afford.  Rumor has it that they also had some sort of … (0 comments)

maryland: FRAUDULENT LENDERS CAUGHT IN MARYLAND! - 10/28/07 12:08 PM
It goes without saying that the predatory lending practices that have sprung up in recent years are finally starting to be understood to be just that: PREDATORY.  Unfortunately there's been more than a few reports, particularly out of PG County, about financial scams that I wanted to post a little info on.      In a report from the August 26th Washington Post, they talked about a company called the Metropolitan Money Store, who has been accused of cheating people out of some serious money by sucking the equity out of their homes. August 26th Post Article on Metro Money Store … (0 comments)

maryland: Countrywide manages to get it right this time.... - 10/23/07 02:12 PM

I gotta say, they really stepped up to the plate and did what makes sense in my mind.  If you haven't already heard, here's a link to the article:
http://www.inman.com/inmanstories.aspx?ID=64991
It's a huge relief to  lot of people that are looking at a terrifying possibility of foreclosure.  While it's certainly not a final answer to a rough market, I think this sort of news should be looked at as not just a relief to TONS of homeowners, but also to Realtors who have watched a flood of foreclosure hit the market recently.  With a little luck this just might ease the glut … (12 comments)

maryland: Where are we going, and why are we in this Handbasket? - 10/18/07 07:17 PM
I really wish there was some sort of easy solution to the deteriorating market that we're seeing, but I seriously doubt we've hit the bottom just yet.  I have a couple of points to make in this post, and they are very closely related, so I'd like to apologize in advance if this gets too long:
The first thing I'd like to discuss is the declining market.  Yes, there are pockets nationally that are seeing value growth.  I'm talking about as a national trend though.  Regardless of what any single region is doing, the general market is one … (7 comments)

maryland: How to make each day better! - 10/17/07 09:20 AM
Well, we all know rentals can be difficult to make a profit on, and I know more than a few Realtors who have no interest in them (I'm sure we all know a few).  It brings up an interesting question though.... How many renters become buyers for you guys after a year or two, and would you work with a renter if you knew there was no way they would decide to buy down the road?
For us, the answer is simple: YES!  For new agents, it's a great way to subsidize your time as a rookie agent.  For … (9 comments)
