snohomish county: History of Snohomish County Homes: The Dutch Colonial - 04/11/11 04:48 AM
What goes around comes around. There is nothing new under the sun. Been there, done that. Yada, yada, yada.
Housing trends (like most trends) tend to wax and wane over the years, but they often retain something from previous generations. It’s like . . . deja vu all over again. Which is exactly what happened in the 1920s with certain types of housing designs.
More accurately called the Dutch Colonial Revival, this quaint, whimsical style reflects early 19th century Americans’ tie with their European roots. While homeowners from earlier decades focused on practicality or the demonstration of wealth, home buyers … (0 comments)

snohomish county: History of Snohomish County Homes: The Victorian - 04/05/11 03:05 AM
Last week we discussed housing trends, how they evolve and are influenced by culture and economy. The financial atmosphere today greatly impacts home trends of tomorrow.
For example, in response to the current recession, we should expect to see more architectural practicality than extravagance in the next five years. Fewer “McMansions” and “Hummer Houses.” Master bedrooms will most likely shrink and great rooms will get . . . well, greater.
But what’s the story behind the Victorian ages of homes? What’s the deal with all the elaborate woodwork, turrets, scallops, and massive covered porches? Prior to the Victorian era (we’re talking … (0 comments)

snohomish county: Snohomish County Homes: The Evolution of Style - 04/05/11 02:59 AM
Do we influence culture or does culture influence us?
What came first, the chicken or the egg?
How much wood would a wood chuck chuck. . . er, never mind.
While I doubt we’ll truly answer these questions, it’s interesting to look into the sociology of home building over the last 100 years and trace the journey of architecture, Northwest style. The key is: trend, fad, fashion. The “in-thing.” Housing is a lot like teen-wear; what’s in today might be completely out tomorrow.
Think: olive green countertops, reflective foil wallpaper of the late 1970s, and black metal railings. All of which … (0 comments)

snohomish county: Age-Restricted Communities and Baby Boomers in Snohomish County - 11/29/10 04:16 AM
Baby Boomers. There are approximately 79 million of ‘em living in the United States. The name alone invokes a cornucopia of images: The Beatles, Watergate, Vietnam War, JFK, Elvis, Mr. Potato Head, Barbie, and Beaver Cleaver.
In 2011, the first Baby Boomers will turn 65 years old. The hippies of yesterday have moved to the yuppies of today and hover as the largest retirement generation in U.S. history. That’s a lot of Betsy Wetsy dolls and Rock’em Sock’em Robots.
According to Del Webb research:
36 percent of Boomers will move or plan to move when they become Empty Nesters. When they … (1 comments)

snohomish county: 6 Important Things to Know About Local Schools When Purchasing A Home - 08/16/10 05:14 AM
Back to school. Powerful words those. Laundry rooms and hall closets across the country are currently filling up with the latest school supplies while parents everywhere contemplate the blessings of public education. Some are also wondering where in the world to find a Double Pack of Red Flair Extra Fine Tip Marking Pens. Good luck with that. I can only offer you my deepest sympathy (and a double thumbs up for encouragement). For those contemplating a move this summer, keep in mind the importance of school districts in your choice of a new home. The mantra, “Location, Location, Location,” is no … (6 comments)

snohomish county: Short Sale Questions and Answers for Snohomish County - 08/11/10 08:49 AM
Questions and Answers to your Short Sale and Foreclosure Questions.

Q. Should we move out and rent some place?
A.  You might want to think about that because it might not be necessary.  Remember this is your home and you  own it until you have no other choice.  Even if the house goes back to the bank at Trustee Sale I would recommend you stay in the house until the bank offers you Cash for your Keys usually around 20 days after the Trustee sale. This will pay for any of your moving expenses.

Q.  My Foreclosure … (0 comments)

snohomish county: Low Interest Rates, High Fashion, and Making the Most of Today in Snohomish County - 08/09/10 04:55 AM
In 1966, the miniskirt hit the West coast in all its Twiggy glory, forever altering the fate of feminine kneecaps across the land—a huge left turn from the lengthy bouffant look of the 50s. Unknown to most people is that the miniskirt invaded Europe a full two years prior, invented by French designer André Courrèges in 1964.
All of which may seem unrelated to the housing market and current U.S. interest rates, but only to the untrained eye. Interest rates and economics (like fashion and miniskirts) tend to move East to West (with an unspecified stopover in the financial Netherlands otherwise … (0 comments)
