port orange: Where Pelicans Sleep? - 11/13/11 04:02 PM
Walking on the beach, I am fascinated by these large birds graciously grazing the sky above the ocean or over the Intracoastal. Pelicans usually fly in formations. You see them gliding and it is quite a sight… And then they suddenly dive into the water to catch the fish… Living in Florida, you learn not to swim when there you see pelicans actively fishing by the shoreline… It means that there is plenty of fish, and, most probably there are other efficient hunters in the water – sharks. Pelicans are here for 30 Millions years, way longer than humans.

port orange: My Friend, Florida Tomato and Art - 10/24/08 07:54 PM
Some time ago I wrote a blog Meeting a Russian Artist. Right Here in Port Orange about a fascinating guy, who is an artist. Well, a real artist. He has graduated from a college of fine arts, and then got his Masters from a prestigious Russian art school in St. Petersburg, Russia. He's been a Port Orange resident for several years now, absolutely legal (so all my AR friends can sleep tonight -LOL). I took the top photo, but I did not have a nice head shot, so I called Yuri and asked that sends me one. He sent two and

port orange: Sitting On The Fence. How Much Does It Cost? - 09/06/08 03:37 AM
Our office is in the oceanfront condo-hotel, and we are used to people coming to us to get the feel of the market, chat about real estate and life in general... It often evokes nostalgic accounts of the times when they could buy homes for only that, and condos for only this...It is always a story how they nearly bought a property, but someone did not let them do it; somebody else bought and then sold for so much more and made a lot of money. They were so close.... They were so right, so smart, and should it happen again, they wouldn't let that someone stop them from buying a

port orange: Harbour Village in Ponce Inlet, Florida - 09/04/08 02:01 AM
Harbour Village. 172-acre development with 104 acres that will not be developed, with over a mile of elevated walkways, Harbour Village is the only large development in a quaint town of Ponce Inlet on the southern tip of the Peninsula. There are no bridges to mainland, and all roads end there. No transients, not hotels/motels, just residential areas with restaurants and marinas dotting the Intracoastal shoreline on the Eest, and pristine white sandy beaches of the Atlantic Ocean on the East. The 721-unit development spans from the Intracoastal to the Atlantic Ocean, consists of several smaller communities: 1. Rivers Edge 6 buildings with garages

port orange: Knowledge. The Blessing or the Curse? - 09/02/08 01:11 AM
We like the phrase Knowledge is Power. It is the Power, but is it always for good or bad? Terrorism in its today's form became possible due to the technological advances, and the Internet, which gives knowledge and guidance. Without the Internet small groups would not be able to survive. It looks like knowledge is used for good or bad depending on who is using it. However, there are cases, and we may not even know how many, where there is no malicious intent and meanwhile, they may have the most profound affect on the lives of many people, and even nations. They may even change the course

port orange: Long Road To a Short Sale Success - 08/23/08 11:27 PM
We got it, we got it, we got it. We finally closed this short sale transaction where the only short thing was the Short sale title. It started in the fall of last year. The Seller reserved the condo unit in 2003 at so called pre-construction price, closed in 2005 at completion, The intention was to move to Daytona. A young PhD, she was doing marketing for real estate companies advertising in the Eastern Europe, had good success with the companies from Arab Emirates, the money were not an object, life was full of promise. American developers were flirting with the idea of

port orange: Where Are We Going? - 08/23/08 04:08 PM
I am already used to the fact that every development in the area (and, I think, anywhere in the State of Florida) is met with fierce opposition. "Greedy developers", "corrupted politicians", "save the environment", "Preserve the Beauty" ... this and much more is what angry locals yell at meetings and hearings. I am watching one "victory" after another for a few last years. And each victory pushes us back. Our population is growing. We are destroying flora and fauna at an unprecedented pace. People are fighting against the high-rises. Adamantly against. However, is this really a problem for the environment? Look at Single

port orange: Plans for Marine Lab in Ponce Inlet - 08/22/08 11:09 PM
I live in a small quaint town of Ponce Inlet, the southernmost municipality in the greater Daytona Beach area. The town is on the tip of the island, past the roads to the bridges, so there is not pass through traffic, no hotels, motels... Just miles of wide white sandy beach, dunes, ocean, river, homes and condos, not higher than 7 stories, but even this is history, as you can't build anything higher than 35' in Ponce Inlet. The businesses in Ponce Inlet are Marinas, and waterfront restaurants. There is a beautiful park at the tip of the peninsula home to the

port orange: Fay Is Leaving. Sort Of... - 08/22/08 07:49 PM
Fay, a very slow moving tropical storm, is still here, but it's center is a bit north of us, and there is less wind and rain. After two days at home, we finally get into the car to go to the office. Turn it on, shift the gear to D and the car gets quite a jolt. Puzzled, trying to put it back into parking, but it does not go back past neutral. So, I sit and wait till it warms up completely, and then move it to "Drive", and start moving. It goes, but something is wrong with it. It

port orange: Amplifying The Offer - 08/20/08 07:31 PM
With Georgia-Russia conflict, I have not written about real estate for quite some time and feel sort of ashamed. So, this is my exoneration... When we have the buyer, we put together the best offer we can, have the Buyer signs and dates it and we send it to the Listing agent. Now it is in his/her corner. In situations where the offer is full price or otherwise is a very strong one and I am confident it is accepted on the spot, there is no worry. Usually, however, my buyers do not want to pay the full price and come up

port orange: Unwelcome Guest Is Here - 08/19/08 10:15 PM
Every summer we brace up for those unwelcome guests. Charley, Frances, Jeanne, Ivan... A lot of destruction, washed away beaches, for many it was lost power in 90-degree heat and humidity, people tired of living without AC, and no fridges working. This was in 2004. Now we got Fay. Not a major hurricane, just a named tropical storm. The governor declared the state of emergency, everyone is ready, schools in the path of the storm are closed, and kids, after just one day in school, are happy that they get a break. The day started quietly. The storm was battering Brevard

port orange: Happy Birthday, Jason Crouch! - 08/17/08 01:52 PM
Jason Crouch is getting one year older today. I never met Jason, never spoke to him. I know that he is in Texas, and that he is working Austin area. What I, however, do know about Jason is that he writes blogs that make sense, and this is not a given in a Social Network of over 100,000 members. As many other Members on AR, I note when I see his posts. There is always something interesting. Not the posts for quick points. He has his voice and he does not disappoint his followers. His posts give you the clear idea who

port orange: The Trails. A Place To Live In Ormond Beach - 08/14/08 09:36 PM
The Trails is an established subdivision in Ormond Beach. North of Grananda Ave (Rt.40), it is accessible from both Granada Ave and from the main entrance on Nova Road right pass the Trails Shopping Center. Besides The Trails, there is also Trails North Forty to the West and Trails South Forty south of Granada. The Trails were built starting from late 70. The development was very sensitive to the existing trees, and this makes it beautiful with all those mature trees and lush vegetation. There are 382 properties in the Trails, you can see some of them in a slideshow below. West

port orange: What's Cooking, Russia? - 08/12/08 12:23 AM
There is a war there in Georgia. Noting to be happy about. No easy solutions there, as the root of the problem is not in Saakashvili presidency or one of his predecessors, but way further in history, when the map was sewn by the Soviet rulers way before the WWII. That's how South Ossetia ended up as part of Georgia. Georgia had its rush of nationalism after the Soviet Union broke apart. It happened in many multi-national republics. Remember Yugoslavia? But they had a bigneighbor, who used every chance to hurt them. Abkhasia conflict 15 years ago was a provocation deliberately

port orange: More Business For Daytona Beach Is Good News - 08/08/08 12:40 AM
Our local newspaper - News-Journal - announced an new car show coming to Daytona Beach. Besides Tampa and Orlando (and 21 other shows all over the world), the show will be held in the Ocean Center from March 31 through April 7. Good timing, as Bike Week runs the first 10 days of March, and Spring Break, that follows, is realtively slow, so a bit more activity on the beachside would be welcome by everyone. With disappearance of BCR (Black College Reunion), that is not terribly missed, but which still left hotels and beachside stores struggling to survive, the new attraction

port orange: Sea Dip. A Condo-Hotel Market Snapshot - 08/06/08 09:47 PM
1233 South Atlantic Ave., Daytona Beach, Fl 32118 This 134-unit oceanfront condo-hotel with city and gorgeous ocean views is half mile south of International Speedway Blvd. Two pools, one outdoor and one indoor. The resort is owner managed, no outside management company, and, as usually the case, they do not have the best and even good rentals. If you plan to keep the unit for yourself, this is not a concern, however, if rental income is important to offset the expenses Sea Dip has the dubious distinction of having the least expensive unit in Daytona. You can see the list of

port orange: The Death of a Dissident - 08/04/08 01:23 AM
Just got the news that the most known former Soviet dissident, Nobel prize winner, writer Alexander Solzhenitsyn died in Russia at age 90 just several hours ago. Solzhenitsyn had his first brush with the authorities when KGB reported him as critical of the regime, and Solzhenitsyn, an army officer, was arrested at the end of WWII and sent to GULAG camp for 8 years. When released, he worked as a teacher. In 1962 he published a small but extremely powerful novel "One day in life of Ivan Denisovich". It is showing one day of life of an ordinary man in the labor

port orange: My Million Dollar Jackpot - 07/31/08 02:38 AM
17 years ago today after a 10- hour flight from Moscow, Boeing 747 (PanAm) has landed in New York at JFK. With $400 in our combined pockets, me, my wife, my son, who turned 19 that day, and our rebellious 17.5- y.o. daughter came to USA. While waiting at immigration, we were trying to imagine our life in two years, in 3 years, in 5 years... All we knew was that we were in America and it was obviously a miracle that we made it here, that nobody stopped us and told us to get lost. We knew what we were
