Housing Upgrades That Don’t Pay - 04/28/12 08:56 PM
Housing Upgrades That Don’t Pay Before you dive into a major renovation project to give a house your special signature, consider how long you’re likely to stay in the house.
A lot of people get into trouble by going into a home they’re only going to be in for a relatively short period of time, and they start doing renovations and additions that are sort of on their fantasy list, but they’re not going to be there long enough to really enjoy.
Here are four reasons to proceed with caution, particularly if you want to maximize your chances of a profitable … (4 comments)

Homeowner Insurance: Getting the Best Quote - 04/28/12 07:26 PM
Homeowner Insurance: Getting the Best Quote Too many people will find the most obscure, no-name insurance companies in order to get the cheapest deal and find out later that the company doesn’t pay on insurance claims!
Bottom Line: It’s a great idea to apply for online quotes from different companies, but before you move forward make sure you look up consumer opinions to make sure the company is legit!
Don’t worry if you find a company with a couple of bad reviews/complaints… any insurance company that’s been around for a while will have a number of complaints. (They just won’t be … (3 comments)

Home Inspections: For New Homes Too! - 04/28/12 07:20 PM
Home Inspections: For New Homes Too! There are a lot of different things that need to be inspected upon the purchase of a new home. A common misconception by many home buyers is that simply because their home is newly constructed an inspection is unnecessary. Nothing could be farther from the truth. New homes require an inspection just as much as any older home, and they have a special set of considerations that need to be examined. Home inspectors are part of the buying and selling process for the protection of the buyer and it is the buyer who is responsible … (0 comments)

Wordless Wednesday | Sorry Mrs Apple Tree - 04/26/12 06:13 PM
This tree has probably been on my property for 60-70 years.  It never received much care but was still producing fruit and really was pretty healthy.  But I have neighbors from hell that complained and complained.  They bought their homes with this tree in place, they knew it was there.  But they still complained, so on Monday I had it taken down.  It was so sad, I had a couple of tears.  oops - left this in draft mode!

Home Defects – Every Home Has Them - 04/22/12 09:14 PM
Home Defects – Every Home Has Them
We’d all like to buy the perfect home. Unfortunately, it just doesn’t exist. Even new homes have defects. That’s why it’s important to have any home you buy inspected by qualified professionals-even if it’s brand new.
You’ll undoubtedly discover defects during your inspections. In fact, you should hope that any significant defects are uncovered before you remove your inspection contingency from the purchase agreement. It’s far worse to be surprised after closing by unanticipated repair expenses.
Armed with a complete assessment of the current condition of the property, you can make an informed … (0 comments)

5 Steps to a Quicker Home Sale - 04/21/12 03:49 PM
5 Steps to a Quicker Home Sale
In a hurry to sell your home? Here’s how to make sure you give yourself the opportunity to snag the best price in shortest amount of time.
1. You have to seriously undercut the competition – Selling a home in a down market almost inevitably means settling for a disappointing price. But to unload your home fast, you’re going to have to dip 10% to 15% below what comparable homes in your neighborhood recently sold for. You still may not be able to compete with foreclosures and short sales, but at least you stand … (3 comments)

3 Money Mistakes to Avoid
During times like these, every mistake you make with your money is even more costly. We’d like to share 3 important money mistakes to avoid during this financial crisis .
1 – Don’t Keep Cash at Home!
Many bank failures has people wondering if their money is safe in a bank. One of the worst things you can possibly do is to start stashing your cash under your mattress (or in a dresser drawer).
If you have your money in an FDIC-insured institution, your deposits are now covered up to $250,000 per individual. Your money is … (2 comments)

Building has started - Bremerton's Newest Starbucks - NOT in a Safeway! - 04/17/12 04:43 PM
There are not many Starbucks that I can think of that are stand alone buildings.  Usually they are in strip-malls, or attached to some other building, or like here in Bremerton inside the Safeway store in the Historic Charleston District.  There is one down by the ferry terminal and one across from the Walmart, but really that isn't in the city limits but in Kitsap County.
The photo below is the start of the new Starbucks.  Its located in the newer Walgreen's parking lot.  I have know it was destined to be there after seeing the building plans from the … (3 comments)

Foreclosure Prevention: Don’t Get Scammed - 04/06/12 10:17 PM
Foreclosure Prevention: Don’t Get Scammed When mortgage borrowers fall behind on payments and run the risk of losing their homes, they sometimes grab the first lifeline tossed their direction. Often that lifeline is a TV or Internet advertisement making grand promises – and has more than one string attached.
There are many rescue scams that are after your business. They’re guaranteeing something they can’t and charging a lot. Even the legitimate for-profit services demand a high pay-out up front.
If you are in trouble and need help to fight off foreclosures, you should ask several questions before hiring anyone.

Sale/Rent Back Schemes – Not Always What They Seem - 04/06/12 10:16 PM
Sale/Rent Back Schemes – Not Always What They Seem Sale/Rent Back Schemes – Not Always What They Seem
As the slumping economy and ensuing credit crunch continues its hold on our economy, and more and more people are struggling with their mortgage payments, a number of companies are springing-up who offer a “sell/rentback” scheme. This type of proposal involves the homeowner having their house bought from them, for a percentage of its market value, then offered the chance to be a tenant, negating the need to have to vacate the premises.
For some, it seems like the perfect opportunity to get … (0 comments)

Selling Your Home? Watch the Pet Odor Selling Your Home? Watch the Pet Odor
To some people, pets are like their children. For others however, they may be highly allergic and can’t stand being around them. When it comes to selling your home, your pets odor, dander and hair, not to mention any damage they’ve done to the home, should be considered problems you need to fix.
While you might not notice a pet smell in your home, chances are someone who doesn’t own pets will notice one, no matter how clean you keep your floors, or how often you change … (2 comments)

Homeowner Associations: Just some Thoughts - 04/03/12 10:22 AM
Home Owner Associations, Condominium Associations, and Co-operatives are filing for bankruptcy at staggering rates. As property owners are not able to afford their mortgages, they often elect not to pay their association dues and what they consider less important monetary obligations.

As a result, Home Owner Associations and Condominium Associations are not able to pay for the expenses they had planned for. Some associations pay for common area elements, roofs, plumbing and other structural aspects of properties. Several associations, primarily condominium associations and co-operatives also pay for water, gas and electric. Some even pay for cable tv and garbage removal.

Home Appraisals: Who’s to Blame for Low Estimates? Auburn Area Homes - 04/03/12 10:18 AM
Home Appraisals: Who’s to Blame for Low Estimates? Auburn Area Homes Appraisals: Who’s to Blame for Low Estimates?
Who exactly IS at fault when an appraisal comes to a less-than-desirable valuation? And what IS a home appraisal based on?
Appraisals are typically handled through the mortgage company and appraisers are often selected from a network of appraisers with which the lender company is affiliated. They’re an unaffiliated third party. Often times, there’s confusion because the homeowner is informed about the cost of the appraisal by the mortgage company/banker, when actually there is no mutually beneficial relationship.
