wildwood: Late Winter Newsletter - 03/09/11 05:48 AM
THE WORST IS OVER Knock on wood, the worst weather that winter has to offer has already been served up. The daylight hours are longer now and the smell of spring is in the air. Even a few daffodils are popping up. Winter did get off to a horrendous start here in Cape May County. The average temperature in both December and January was about six degrees below normal. Brrrr! After getting hit with 17 inches of snow the day after Christmas, the future looked bleak. Surprisingly, that was it. The next six snow-storms basically started as rain and left a

wildwood: The Vacation Home Real Estate Market is back! - 12/23/10 03:02 PM
The Vacation Home Real Estate Market is back! Go ahead and snicker. This Mountain Man guy (and City Girl) is full of bull, you're thinking. Not so fast, my friend. Sure, the national unemployment numbers are still tough to swallow. And yes, we are still seeing more vacant store fronts popping up. Discretionary spending is off, too, though you have to wonder when you see folks descend on a mall and drop hundreds of dollars on trivial junk for Christmas. But here in Cape May County, New Jersey at the shore, the tide has turned in the real estate market. Pun intended.

wildwood: Snow in the Wildwoods - 02/10/10 12:11 PM
Well, we are certainly having our share of snow this year. I've seen more snow in the last 2 weeks than I've seen in the 32 years I've lived in this area. Actually, I bought a hotel in Wildwood in 1978 during a big storm that dropped over 2 feet of snow and the agent had to carry me over the drifts so I could get in the door. Maybe that means something big is about to happen in my life. I wasn't too upset about not being able to get to work over the weekend because I brought everything home, and I can access

wildwood: Catholic Schools reeling in Cape May County - 01/06/10 05:33 AM
Catholic Schools reeling in Cape May County January 6th, 2010 Just one day after school officials called rumors of Wildwood Catholic High School's closing unfounded, the Diocese of Camden announced that the school will close at the end of the school year this June. It's just the latest round in the demise of the Catholic church in Cape May County. In 2007, St. Raymond's elementary/junior high school in the Villas section of Lower Township was closed by the Diocese of Camden, which oversees the Catholic goings-on in southern New Jersey. Students, parents, and teachers were saddened, outraged, and in shock.

wildwood: Early Winter Newsletter - 12/30/09 06:06 PM
TURN ON THE HEAT Once again, it seems that summer ended and after a couple short weeks of autumn, we emerged right into winter. The story through it all here at the shore has been rain, rain, rain. It seems like we get dumped on with two or three inches of rain, then after a couple day reprieve it rains again. The bright side is that the bugs are gone, the leaves are raked up, and you can have the beach and Boardwalk all to yourself. Enjoy it! RENTALS ARE BACK After being mothballed since 2004, Jewell Real Estate Agency has

wildwood: Just a Feeling - 12/30/09 06:02 PM
Mountain Man and City Girl The Blogsite of Jewell Real Estate Agency, Wildwood Crest, NJ 609-729-8505 Just a Feeling Wednesday, December 30th, 2009 As realtors, we often get hunches about our own individual local real estate market, whether it's Monterrey, California or Baton Rouge, Louisiana or Bangor, Maine. Here at Jewell Real Estate Agency, we have a feeling about 2010. A strong feeling. All the pieces seem to be falling into place that 2010 is going to be a great year. The best since 2005. Our local real estate market is Cape May County, a small tourist-oriented county at the

wildwood: Weather Extremes - 12/21/09 12:22 PM
Mountain Man and City Girl The Blogsite of Jewell Real Estate Agency, Wildwood Crest, NJ 609-729-8505 Weather Extremes This weekend's snow storm - or "storm event" as the weathermen seem to be calling it nowadays - was the conclusion to a crazy autumn of weather in Cape May County, and the mid-Atlantic states for that matter. With our local weather influenced by the close proximity of the Atlantic Ocean and 13-mile wide Delaware Bay, snowfall totals were much less than the 23″ that Philadelphia officially received. The Wildwoods had about 2 inches, with Rio Grande about 4″, Cape May Court

wildwood: Wildwood"s New Mayor - 12/19/09 08:25 AM
Mountain Man and City Girl The Blogsite of Jewell Real Estate Agency, Wildwood Crest, NJ 609-729-8505 Wildwood's New Mayor Shortly after new Wildwood commissioners Ed Harshaw and Al Brannen were sworn in Monday night to join sitting commissioner Gary DeMarzo, the three picked the new mayor. Envelope, please. And the winner is Gary DeMarzo. Maybe winner isn't the correct term, considering the tough road ahead. Wildwood is beset by having the highest tax rate in Cape May County, $1.83 per hundred dollars of assessed value. The portion that is directly attributed to Wildwood's budget is $1.11 per hundred, with the

wildwood: New Jersey: Not Business Friendly - 12/18/09 07:58 PM
New Jersey: Not Business Friendly December 17th, 2009 Let's face it. If the economy is to recover quickly, the bottom line is jobs, jobs, jobs. Put people to work and everything else falls into place. Businesses, of course, are the key to creating jobs. And two-thirds of jobs are with small and medium size businesses. So to get businesses to hire more employees, the economic climate must be favorable. New Jersey, unfortunately, ranks last or near the bottom of every business-friendly list generated, based on several factors. New Jersey ranks well in transportation, easy accessibility to large markets, having an available labor

wildwood: Banks Don't Like Other's Rules - 12/14/09 01:35 PM
Mountain Man and City Girl The Blogsite of Jewell Real Estate Agency, Wildwood Crest, NJ 609-729-8505 Banks Don't Like Other's Rules December 14th, 2009 Another major bank - this time Citigroup - is paying back its government bailout money because it doesn't like the rules that go along with the bucks. The main rule, of course, is limiting the pay of top management. Citigroup was one of nearly 700 banks that received bailout money nearly a year ago via the Troubled Asset Relief Program. It got $45 billion, with $20 billion to be paid back and the balance of

wildwood: Real Estate Settlement Changes January 1 - 12/14/09 09:30 AM
Real Estate Settlement changes January 1 December 13th, 2009 The Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act (RESPA), a consumer protection statute enacted in 1974, will have a new face beginning January 1, 2010. RESPA was basically designed to give effective disclosure to homebuyers and sellers prior to initiating the real estate purchase process, so there were no "surprises" at the closing table. The new RESPA reforms are aimed at giving the consumer better information earlier in the process and the ability to shop for the best deal by comparing service providers. Potential buyers need only give six pieces of information -

wildwood: Wildwood Recall Successful - 12/12/09 09:10 PM
Wildwood recall successful December 10th, 2009 "Surprise, Surprise, Surprise", as Gomer Pyle used to say. To the surprise of many, including this ardent Cape May County observer, voters successfully recalled City of Wildwood Mayor Ernie Troiano and Commissioner Bill Davenport in Tuesday's special election. The first part of the ballot asked whether voters wanted to recall the pair. Voters went 624 to 487 to recall the mayor and 649 to 470 to unseat the commissioner. Apparently there was enough dissent within the community to overcome the regular party machine. The second part of the ballot then asked to vote for two

wildwood: A Real Jump Start - 12/12/09 08:45 PM
Mountain Man and City Girl The Blogsite of Jewell Real Estate Agency, Wildwood Crest, NJ 609-729-8505 A Real Jump-Start December 11th, 2009 Nearly a year into the Obama administration I think Americans can see that the No.1 issue in the nation's mind - the economy - is still sputtering. Bank bailouts and all that stuff just aren't working fast enough. As Mighty Mouse used to say, "Here I come to save the day!" So here's my simplistic approach to ending the Recession. The United States of America has the highest bond rating possible - AAA. That rating means

wildwood: Baby Boomers Will Be Replaced - 12/12/09 08:19 PM
Mountain Man and City Girl The Blogsite of Jewell Real Estate Agency, Wildwood Crest, NJ 609-729-8505 « A Real Jump-Start Baby Boomers will be replaced Most people would agree that the real estate market of the last 15 or 20 years has been fueled by the Baby Boomers. As you know, that's the 80 million Americans born between 1946 and 1964, and now ages 45 to 63 years old. They've had careers and saved money and invested in real estate, stocks, and retirement plans, amongst other things. The next generation has been called "Generation X", originally called the "Baby Bust" due to

wildwood: Real Estate Looking Up For 2009 - 01/10/09 02:01 PM
Real Estate Looking Up For 2009 January 10th, 2009 Happy New Year Everyone! Jewell Real Estate Agency had a good 2008, and we are looking forward to an even better 2009. The year started off with a bang on January 2. Our office was so busy and crowded you couldn't move. Both Douglas and I had people in our office looking to buy and there were people in the front office waiting to talk to us. Instead of all the doom and gloom that you read in the newspaper, the people we talked to were upbeat and felt it's the

wildwood: The Sky Is Not Falling In Cape May County, New Jersey - 02/25/08 07:10 PM
The newspapers are full of doom and gloom with stories about the real estate market. They make generalizations about foreclosures, prices dropping, the bottom hasn't hit yet and so on. It would be nice if just once they mentioned all the good things that are happening. My husband, Douglas, and I own Jewell Real Estate Agency with offices in Wildwood Crest and Swainton. Good things are in store for the South Jersey Shore area. Douglas is the writer in the family and in the following paragraghs he highlights many of the positive things Cape May County and Atlantic County have to look forward to. Having been a mathematics major
