wildwood crest: Late Winter Newsletter - 03/09/11 05:48 AM
THE WORST IS OVER Knock on wood, the worst weather that winter has to offer has already been served up. The daylight hours are longer now and the smell of spring is in the air. Even a few daffodils are popping up. Winter did get off to a horrendous start here in Cape May County. The average temperature in both December and January was about six degrees below normal. Brrrr! After getting hit with 17 inches of snow the day after Christmas, the future looked bleak. Surprisingly, that was it. The next six snow-storms basically started as rain and left a

wildwood crest: Our 10th Anniversary - 01/30/11 05:54 AM
Our 10th Anniversary January 30th, 2011 Looking back at our beginnings on January 29, 2001, it seems like such a long time ago. We opened our Wildwood Crest real estate office that day. We didn't know what to expect. We had no idea if our "Modern Technology, Old-Fashioned Service" philosophy would work. Would people even care? Could we compete with the chain franchises in a decidedly down market? Well, Jewell Real Estate Agency was a success right away. The combination of the local vacation home real estate market taking off in 2001 and people really appreciating the personal service of

wildwood crest: Optimism on the Horizon - 01/25/11 08:42 AM
Optimism on the Horizon, Part II Back on December 18, 2010, about 4 1/2 weeks ago, we wrote on this blogsite about our optimistic outlook on the local vacation home real estate market here at the shore in Cape May County, New Jersey. We talked about expanding our business, but purposely left you in the dark about how it would be accomplished. Well, here it is. We have a signed agreement to purchase the property next door. A former upscale home decor business, the owners were forced to close their lucrative business due to health issues. They listed the 100′x60′ property for sale with

wildwood crest: The Vacation Home Real Estate Market is back! - 12/23/10 03:02 PM
The Vacation Home Real Estate Market is back! Go ahead and snicker. This Mountain Man guy (and City Girl) is full of bull, you're thinking. Not so fast, my friend. Sure, the national unemployment numbers are still tough to swallow. And yes, we are still seeing more vacant store fronts popping up. Discretionary spending is off, too, though you have to wonder when you see folks descend on a mall and drop hundreds of dollars on trivial junk for Christmas. But here in Cape May County, New Jersey at the shore, the tide has turned in the real estate market. Pun intended.

wildwood crest: Snow in the Wildwoods - 02/10/10 12:11 PM
Well, we are certainly having our share of snow this year. I've seen more snow in the last 2 weeks than I've seen in the 32 years I've lived in this area. Actually, I bought a hotel in Wildwood in 1978 during a big storm that dropped over 2 feet of snow and the agent had to carry me over the drifts so I could get in the door. Maybe that means something big is about to happen in my life. I wasn't too upset about not being able to get to work over the weekend because I brought everything home, and I can access

wildwood crest: Early Winter Newsletter - 12/30/09 06:06 PM
TURN ON THE HEAT Once again, it seems that summer ended and after a couple short weeks of autumn, we emerged right into winter. The story through it all here at the shore has been rain, rain, rain. It seems like we get dumped on with two or three inches of rain, then after a couple day reprieve it rains again. The bright side is that the bugs are gone, the leaves are raked up, and you can have the beach and Boardwalk all to yourself. Enjoy it! RENTALS ARE BACK After being mothballed since 2004, Jewell Real Estate Agency has

wildwood crest: A Christmas Blessing - 12/25/09 11:07 AM
My Husband surprised me and wrote this blog this morning. I, too, am truly blessed with a husband that supports me in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health. Our wish for the world is peace, health and the wisdom to try to make this a better place for all. MERRY CHRISTMAS! A Christmas Blessing Friday, December 25th, 2009 Everyone is blessed at Christmas, whether they are aware of it or not. And you don't have to be a Christian for Christmas to have an effect on your spirituality. I'm a perfect example. I'm not a Christian. I

wildwood crest: Weather Extremes - 12/21/09 12:22 PM
Mountain Man and City Girl The Blogsite of Jewell Real Estate Agency, Wildwood Crest, NJ 609-729-8505 Weather Extremes This weekend's snow storm - or "storm event" as the weathermen seem to be calling it nowadays - was the conclusion to a crazy autumn of weather in Cape May County, and the mid-Atlantic states for that matter. With our local weather influenced by the close proximity of the Atlantic Ocean and 13-mile wide Delaware Bay, snowfall totals were much less than the 23″ that Philadelphia officially received. The Wildwoods had about 2 inches, with Rio Grande about 4″, Cape May Court

wildwood crest: New Jersey: Not Business Friendly - 12/18/09 07:58 PM
New Jersey: Not Business Friendly December 17th, 2009 Let's face it. If the economy is to recover quickly, the bottom line is jobs, jobs, jobs. Put people to work and everything else falls into place. Businesses, of course, are the key to creating jobs. And two-thirds of jobs are with small and medium size businesses. So to get businesses to hire more employees, the economic climate must be favorable. New Jersey, unfortunately, ranks last or near the bottom of every business-friendly list generated, based on several factors. New Jersey ranks well in transportation, easy accessibility to large markets, having an available labor

wildwood crest: Dennis Township Gets Liquor Store - 12/18/09 07:47 PM
Dennis Township gets Liquor Store Thursday, December 17th, 2009 Back in 2006, Dennis Township auctioned its first-ever liquor license for a retail store, known as a Plenary Retail Distribution License. In New Jersey ABC lingo, it's known as a "44″ license, meaning the liquor is for off-premises consumption only. With just two bidders, the license went for $1.1 million. The township set a minimum bid of $700,000, and the other bid was unsuccessful at $756,000. The winning bidder sold the license to the Gleeson family earlier this year and they will be building their liquor store in Oceanview at

wildwood crest: Real Estate Settlement Changes January 1 - 12/14/09 09:30 AM
Real Estate Settlement changes January 1 December 13th, 2009 The Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act (RESPA), a consumer protection statute enacted in 1974, will have a new face beginning January 1, 2010. RESPA was basically designed to give effective disclosure to homebuyers and sellers prior to initiating the real estate purchase process, so there were no "surprises" at the closing table. The new RESPA reforms are aimed at giving the consumer better information earlier in the process and the ability to shop for the best deal by comparing service providers. Potential buyers need only give six pieces of information -

wildwood crest: Wildwood Recall Successful - 12/12/09 09:10 PM
Wildwood recall successful December 10th, 2009 "Surprise, Surprise, Surprise", as Gomer Pyle used to say. To the surprise of many, including this ardent Cape May County observer, voters successfully recalled City of Wildwood Mayor Ernie Troiano and Commissioner Bill Davenport in Tuesday's special election. The first part of the ballot asked whether voters wanted to recall the pair. Voters went 624 to 487 to recall the mayor and 649 to 470 to unseat the commissioner. Apparently there was enough dissent within the community to overcome the regular party machine. The second part of the ballot then asked to vote for two

Mountain Man and City Girl The Blogsite of Jewell Real Estate Agency, Wildwood Crest, NJ 609-729-8505 A Real Jump-Start December 11th, 2009 Nearly a year into the Obama administration I think Americans can see that the No.1 issue in the nation's mind - the economy - is still sputtering. Bank bailouts and all that stuff just aren't working fast enough. As Mighty Mouse used to say, "Here I come to save the day!" So here's my simplistic approach to ending the Recession. The United States of America has the highest bond rating possible - AAA. That rating means

wildwood crest: Real Estate Looking Up For 2009 - 01/10/09 02:01 PM
Real Estate Looking Up For 2009 January 10th, 2009 Happy New Year Everyone! Jewell Real Estate Agency had a good 2008, and we are looking forward to an even better 2009. The year started off with a bang on January 2. Our office was so busy and crowded you couldn't move. Both Douglas and I had people in our office looking to buy and there were people in the front office waiting to talk to us. Instead of all the doom and gloom that you read in the newspaper, the people we talked to were upbeat and felt it's the

wildwood crest: Jewell Real Estate Agency Autumn Newsletter - 10/23/08 08:41 PM
Autumn 2008 THE TRANSITIONAL SEASON At various stages of life, folks tend to change which season is their favorite. As a youth it's summer, with the least favorite being fall. Guess that's because summer meant no school and autumn heralded the return to the classroom. As a baby boomer approaching 60 years old, the most special season is now fall. Who doesn't love the cooler nights, less humidity in the day, and witnessing firsthand the cycle of life. The trees exhibit a colorful display, while many birds migrate south and the spotted fawns are suddenly transformed into teenage deer.

wildwood crest: Stop and Smell The Roses - 02/09/08 11:37 AM
My husband, Douglas, has spent the last few days at our recently built cabin in West Virginia. He's in the process of getting our property ready for the delivery of a garage. Our idea was to have a place to getaway and relax. I'm the type of person who loves her work. I spend 6 days a week at the Wildwood Crest office and usually end up doing real estate business on Wednesday, my day off. Douglas divides his time between our 2 offices, his landscaping business and working on our property at home. He has made our home a paradise. We only have

wildwood crest: Looking In The Mirror of Cape May County - 02/06/08 07:57 PM
The following is a blog from the real estate website I have with my husband, Douglas. We've named our blog "Mountain Man and City Girl". Douglas is the adventurer, and I'm the city girl from Philadelphia. Together we run Jewell Real Estate Agency. We have 2 offices. One in Wildwood Crest and one off the island in Swainton. We fell in love with West Virginia when we were there on vacation at Sweet Thyme Inn, a vegetarian bed and breakfast. We purchased 19 acres and built a log cabin. It's interesting how you can come from different areas and hear almost the exact sentiments from
