politics: Obama Housing Fix: Live in Your Car - 01/24/12 10:55 PM
I'm seldom political-I'm a capitalist, not a ideologue- and while I like President Obama, I have to say that I am incredibly disappointed by the State of the Union speech this evening for one good reason: he barely touched on housing or what he'd do to fix the industry. It is among our biggest problems and he barely went there. I could also do without the camera on the person Mr Obama was just about to mention, because it made the whole thing seem like a choreographed effort between journalists and politicians, but I guess that's nothing new. It was a

politics: Mr President, You Won't Fix the Economy Until You Fix the Housing Market - 09/02/11 11:48 PM
If you haven't heard of LuAnn Lavine, I'll tell you why she matters. She was mentioned by Maureen Dowd in her last NY Times column, and has one of the most emailed stories on industry news site Inman News. Last week, Ms Lavine, a real estate broker, got up at a town hall meeting and told President Obama how rough it is out there in the housing market. When he gave a rather vanilla, political answer, she challenged him, respectfully, but told him that short sales and loan modifications were a disaster and that lenders wanted perfection, which seldom occurs in

politics: Important Update on Housing Rights - 07/20/11 08:27 AM
Item: The Senate passed a measure late yesterday evening to ensure that buyers of homes have their rights to "Housing with Dignity." The act's precepts include the right to an home in "compliance" and other minimal, basic housing rights, or to have a renumeration for the purchase of homes not in conformity to the proposed bill, which goes to the House on Friday. Entitled "Deserving Everything Updated For A Song" (DUEFAS), the intention of the bill is to reverse owner bias against buyers seeking affordable housing. A groundbreaking piece of legislation, the bill, if signed into law, will mandate that all

politics: How Dumb Are Politicians? - 11/13/10 08:54 PM
How dumb are the politicians we are ostensibly sending to Washington to clean up the economy? Well, try this dumb: There is now talk of ending the mortgage interest deduction in order to rein in the deficit. It goes without saying that such a move would throw millions in the USA's middle class into a tailspin (like we need that now) and throw millions more out of reach from even buying who would otherwise qualify. It is even more insidious than that. Just the talk of such a move freezes many people who might otherwise act, further harming the economy. When otherwise ready willing and able people hear that

politics: Earth To Illinois: Why is Blagojevich Still Governor? - 12/27/08 07:44 AM
Those of us who live in the NY Metropolitan area (otherwise called the Tri-State area) know all about scandals involving our state governors. Since 2002, all three governors of NY, NJ and CT have resigned amidst scandal. And their offenses paled in comparison to Illinois Rod Blagojevich arrest for trying to sell a US Senate seat. But, they did leave office. Spitzer's offense was literally a peccadillo in comparison, as was former NJ Gov. Jim McGreevey's affair. Connecticut's John Rowland quit in 2004 not after a marital affair but for corruption. And at the time of his resignation he was just
