scams: I Have a Referral For You! Not! - 03/13/12 03:28 AM
We get our fair share of referrals from around the country, so it is often difficult to separate legit messages from schlocky  vendors looking to sell us something. Prior to this past weekend, a message was left in my office from what was ostensibly an agent in California who had a buyer looking in Briarcliff Manor. That's right in my wheelhouse, so she got a call back within the hour. 
Voicemail. And then, of course, the weekend. 
I've been down this road before with the 4:55 pm messages, and I thought for a moment that I'd get a call on Monday … (179 comments)

To the guy who thinks it is clever to inquire on one of my listings as if he were an interested buyer, only to pitch me  that he is an Internet search firm and can improve my search engine rankings:
I will never, ever do business with you. 
I really get pinched by the false alarm you cause when an entire admin staff puts what they are doing on hold, goes into service mode to answer an inquiry, determines which agent will take care of the potential buyer or seller, only to slide to the bottom of the pole and see … (26 comments)

scams: Rebates: Negotiated Upfront or Not at All - 07/19/10 03:13 AM
I'm not really a big fan of rebates. Are you a fan of making less money?
Now, before you dismiss me as a broker who only wants to maximize his commission, I am pretty qualified to write about buyer rebates in a real estate transaction, because I am a Redfin Partner Agent, and rebates are one of the linchpins of their business model.
