santa clarita heroes: How to keep abreast with friends on Facebook like Sheila R.Veloz Breast Imaging Center - 11/01/09 02:27 PM
My wife called the Sheila R. Veloz Breast Imaging Center the other day to schedule her annual Breast Exam.  Unbeknownst to her our present insurance carrier did not cover this type of preventive care and so when she was told she would be faced with a $160.00 bill she told the lady on the other line that she didn't realize it would cost that much and would get back with them.  Later that day she told me she was holding off from having her breast exam due to the cost.  I told her to call back and schedule an appointment anyway and that I … (2 comments)

santa clarita heroes: Teen safe rides home can help your teenager get home safely - 10/17/09 08:44 PM
Do you have a teen driver?  Many of us do, my oldest just turned sixteen and is in the process of getting her driver's license.  She also shared ironically how some of her friends had been drinking the night before and it was a wake up call for me to not only make this a teachable moment for her and I, but also with other parents like you.  Now I know your "precious" would never be involved in any of these activities however in the event they slip up here are some valuable resources and unfortunately lessons we all need to … (0 comments)

santa clarita heroes: Do you have a family? Want to see them again! - 10/11/09 03:01 AM
Do you have a family? Not one of the first thoughts that came to mind when I found myself stranded on the side of the 210 freeway the other day.  But I was asked that question point blank by a total stranger I just met on the side of the road.  So what led up to this chance encounter you might ask or wonder.  Well I was driving back from Chino Hills on my way back to Santa Clarita when I began to feel a mild vibration in the car.  I began to reason is the road bumpy or is my … (8 comments)

I was reading the "The Signal" our local community newspaper this last Friday Nov 28, 2008 and came across an article entitled "Giving, and giving thanks"
The article was about a local business owner (Roger Hasper) and his wife (Shannon) and how they transformed the back parking lot of there bicycle shop into a Thanksgiving feast for hundreds (Approximately 300).
Here is a local business man called to give back to his community. Why? he's asked, because "Matthew 25:35 tells you what to do" Here is an example of Faith in action, qouting scripture, an extraordinary act of kindness one man's … (2 comments)

santa clarita heroes: Caringbridge a Caring bridge to the world - 07/31/08 01:55 PM
Like a bridge over troubled water I will ease your mind. - Simon and Garfunkel My brother in law Dan Gallagher was recently diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia a rare blood disorder which damages your bone marrow. Your bone marrow stops producing new red blood cells which places you at a higher risk of infection and uncontrolled bleeding. His symptoms began unassumingly by his feeling a little sluggish and then he began bruising rather easily throughout his body. A visit to the doctor, a diagnoses, and he is now being treated at the City of Hope in Duarte California. This all happened … (5 comments)

santa clarita heroes: Got M.I.L.K ? - 06/10/08 03:29 AM
The first thing that probably comes to mind is a funny commercial or someone with a white mustache but this M.I.L.K. stands for Managing Information on Lost Kids. Everyday, parents think it can never happen to them. Yet everyday it happens, a child is reported missing in the U.S. Here are some sobering statistics. According to a 2002 study from the Department of Justice over 797,000 children (under18) go missing in the U.S. each year. An average of 2,185 children are reported missing everyday! 40% of parents of a missing child cannot supply a current picture. 34% of parents do not … (0 comments)

santa clarita heroes: This could make a huge impact on someone you love? - 04/25/08 10:41 AM
This was sent to me today. I did not compose it, nor do I know who the author is? It was not copyrighted, so I would like to share it with you. It reads on like this... Too Busy for a Friend... One day a teacher asked her students to list the names of the other students in the room on two sheets of paper, leaving a space between each name. Then she told them to think of the nicest thing they could say about each of their classmates and write it down. It took the remainder of the class period … (3 comments)

santa clarita heroes: Emergency Expo 2008 at the College of the Canyons - 02/28/08 04:15 PM
What would you do in the event of a disaster?  Call 911?, Call your mother?
Most likely in the event of a disaster you may not be able to reach these two.  What now?  What steps should you take to protect your family and those you love?
Well that is what the Emergency Expo is all about in a friendly, not threatening manner.  These are important questions we must be able to answer in the event of an emergency.  This expo empowers you with those tools and resources to be prepared for these types of events.  There are booths set up throughout the expo … (0 comments)

santa clarita heroes: Habitat For Humanity in Santa Clarita raises $120,000 to assist local fire victims - 02/08/08 07:44 PM

I just receieved an update from Donna Deutchman CEO of Habitat For Humanity representing both the San Fernando and Santa Clarita Valleys.  Donna updated us as to the most recent developments and the local efforts in fundraising.  As of 2/2008 this local chapter has raised $120,000 to date and counting. This is an incredible achievement and a testimony to those actively involved.  These needed funds are critical in seeing that local disaster fire victims can be assisted in rebuilding when local and national efforts are not sufficient or they don't qualify for certain funds because they don't fit the "criteria".

santa clarita heroes: Mac's Project and the Michael Hoefflin Foundation join to battle child cancer - 01/25/08 01:21 AM
I met Chuck Maier at the Santa Clarita Business Expo a little over a year ago.  Unlike the other booths who were selling their wares and services, Chuck had his own booth and was sharing information about his and his wife Teri's Project.  What project? Mac's Project.  What's Mac's Project?  One of the most important projects I have participated in.   Read below.

I was touched after learning about her battle with cancer and took action.  Many times we have good intentions but we don't follow through.  This is a no brainer and I have been personally contributing by recycling my … (2 comments)

santa clarita heroes: City of Santa Clarita thanks all heros who helped in our recent fires - 11/14/07 02:14 PM

11/2007
I recently came across a few banners on the (5) freeway overpasses and one here on Newhall Ranch Road which expresses my sentiments and I am certain most of us who reside here in Santa Clarita.
I would like to personally thank all fire, police, city, government officials and everyday citizens for their efforts in saving peoples lives, homes, and in some cases livelihoods.  If not for all of their efforts combined the devastation we experienced here in Santa Clarita could have been much greater than we experienced.

santa clarita heroes: Santa Clarita Heroes Amongst us emerge from the ashes - 11/10/07 12:05 PM
I as well as thousands of others watched in amazement as an accidental fire caused by a local 10 year old playing with matches consumed brush, trees, homes and whatever lay in its path.  Despite the heroic efforts of firefighters some of these homes could not escape its wrath.  The Buck weed fire raged on through Agua Dulce and wound its way through Bouquet Canyon.
What we did not know as we watched in shock were the stories of sheer terror, heroism, and Miracles going on behind the scenes.  As the local networks and local hometown radio KHTS 1220 A.M. gave us … (0 comments)

santa clarita heroes: Update on Jack McClellan A Major Victory for Local Santa Clarita Attorneys! - 08/24/07 02:48 PM
I as well as many local Santa Clarita residents attended the hearing this morning in Superior Court in Chatsworth for Jack McClellan.  The courtroom was standing room only and I witnessed first hand the proceedings.  The end result of this hearing is Jack McClellan is now barred from any place where children congregate in the state of California as well as stay 10 yards away from any place where children congregate.  This restraining order will be in effect for the next three years.
This is a major victory for the local Santa Clarita prosecution team at the Owen Patterson and Owen firm. I applaud the efforts of Rick … (2 comments)
