A woman from La Crosse, Wisconsin received nearly $244,000 from unrealized, uncashed bonds that were forgotten and lost which she held jointly with her now deceased husband.
 
The woman, 81 years old had no idea that her husband owned a number of municipal bonds, which went to the state after his death.
 
Because of the dollar size, state officials tracked the woman down and contacted her, "It was such a large amount of money that our office contacted her," said Ron Giordan, a spokesman for the state treasury.
 
The woman declined to comment.

A Missouri resident got a very nice surprise after she received a phone call telling her that she should search for missing money that may belong to her from some of the sites that can be found on the Internet.
Her name is Roberta Allen and after searching, found that she was owed money, but didn’t know how much.  After she applied for the unclaimed money, she received a check in the mail and was in shock at the amount.

Missouri is currently holding more than $600 million in unclaimed money.  It's stated that 1 in 10 Missourian's are owed money.
State Treasurer, Clint Zweifel wants Missourian's to have their money and has given back around $95 million in the last year.

The state of Ohio has approximately $1.4 billion in unclaimed funds in their stash and they want to pay it out..
Recently there has been an onslaught of payouts due to heavy reporting by the news media about all the money that the state is holding.  As a matter of fact, they have reported a 40% increase in filed claims and a 36% higher payout for recent months compared to the same time last year.
The state paid out $14.6 million in 14,473 claims so far this fiscal year.

The state comptroller of New York, Thomas DiNapoli is pushing hard to let New Yorkers know that they can go to the state’s website http://www.osc.state.ny.us/ouf/index.htm so they can get their piece of $11 billion that New York is holding in unclaimed funds.  They’re going so far as to holding statewide events to let New Yorker’s know that they have this money and some of it may belong to them.

John Perdue is the State Treasurer for the state of West Virginia.
This year, alone, his office has returned $14 million in unclaimed property, which is a record since Treasurer John Perdue took office in 1997.
"My wife was watching Clark Howard on national TV, we went to the national unclaimed funds website and she found that I had a couple partials there. The State Treasurer for Illinois, Dan Rutherford is going to hold 16 Cash Dash events throughout DuPage County from Oct. 4-6.  This is to help local residents see if state of Illinois is holding any money or unclaimed property entitled to them.
Currently, the state has just over $1.5 billion dollars in cash as well as all the contents from safety deposit boxes that have been considered dormant and/or abandoned for at least 5 years.

The Illinois Cash Dash program is going strong!
State Treasurer, Dan Rutherford is going around the state to promote the 50-year-old program so that those people who hear about it will check to see if they can claim their part of the $1.4 Billion dollars that it is currently holding.
The program is seeing quite a bit of success – they have given back over $19 million dollars to the rightful heirs since July 2010 to today.  That’s a 58% increase over last year.

The state of Michigan has money that may belong to you.  A simple check of their state's website and a few of the national sites available, may reveal that there is money waiting there for you.
Aretha Franklin (yes, the singer) has 67 links for money that is owed to her.  She know about the funds, but just hasn't gotten around to it yet.

Kansas has been spreading the word about its $221 million dollars sitting in its treasury by using media.  They (the state) feels that many people still do not believe that money could exist for them.  
The state of Kansas currently has over 1,200,000 records in which state agencies must manage because they all have varying amounts of money that is owed to people that still live or Kansas or once have.  This is  a growing concern for the Kansas state treasury, as the dollar amounts keep growing.

On September 16th and 17th you will have the chance to buy at auction more than 34,000 items from Florida's Unclaimed Property vaults.  The auction will be held in Ponte Vedra Beach at the Sawgrass Marriott Golf Resort and Spa, 1000 PGA Tour Boulevard.
 
Florida’s Chief Financial Officer, Jeff Atwater, announced  that his office will be the one holding the 2011 auction.  This auction is open to the public and all our encouraged to participate.
Saturday, September 17th, the auction begins at 10:00 a.m. The public preview will be held on Friday, September 16th, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Illinois wants people to know that they may have some money coming to them.  Today the state is going to be in Columbia and Chester
If you're in Columbis, the event will be at 9:30 am through 12:00 pm today at The Market Place and if you're in Chester, the event will be from 2:00 pm through 4:30 pm.  These events are being put on by state representative, Jerry Costello, II and the Office of the State Treasurer.
