I have been a home energy auditor now for three years. When researching on how to diversify my business into this area I discovered the Home Energy Tune-uP program. It appealed to me on many levels most notably it was designed specifically for home inspectors. The premise being home inspectors are already trained and knowledgeable about homes. Another plus is most States require licensing and as such that raises the level of expertise and responsibility of the home inspector-energy auditor further.

Most everyone is familiar with the pink fiberglass insulation found in many, many homes. Everyone knows the pink feline character that shows us how this stuff will keep our homes warm and our energy bills reasonable. If only he had an infrared camera, the things he'd see!
There has been controversy surrounding the effectiveness of fiberglass insulation for years mostly between the manufactures and building science experts. The facts are strong that fiberglass is poor insulation that rarely performs as stated.

This past Sunday, May 25, I was featured in Business Week TV news story on energy audits. The story was shot earlier in the week at a home in Bridgeport CT.
It was an exciting and fun experience. The anchor who conducted the interview was great to work with and, I felt, had a great understanding of the importance and value of an energy audit and infrared thermal imaging.

Infrared cameras are becoming quite common in many different professions. One area where these devices excel is as a part of an energy audit. Makes great sense; heat sensitive camera to locate areas of thermal loss in a home or building.  But as I just emphasized it is just one small part of the total audit.
I like to call the infrared camera the WOW! of the energy audit. It is cool and impressive to see the house through the lens of this high tech device. It can reveal defects undetectable by visual means, but it is not the most important information … (1 comments)

Just about every home has an entry way into the attic. It can be a small scuttle often tucked away inside a closet or a pull down stair way in the hall. Some homes even have a full stairway into the attic (a personal favorite of mine). What these entries all have in common is a covering over the opening. Be it a door, a piece of wood or sheetrock, the openings are by some means closed off from the cold, unconditioned attic. But most often they are not insulated or sealed allowing heat to easily escape into the attic.

Windows are one of the most noticeable parts of our homes. They let us see the world outside and let light inside. They are also a gapping hole in the thermal envelope of our homes. A significant amount of heat is lost through the windows. This is because glass is an extremely poor insulator. Due to this characteristic windows have evolved to the thermal multi-paned types today. But is replacing your "old" windows with a modern thermally superior variety going to make a huge difference in your utility costs? The short answer, very likely no.

Traditionally the major tool for home energy assessments was the blower door fan. This piece of equipment is a bulky calibrated fan designed to mount into the front door frame of the home. Its purpose is to determine how "leaky" the home is and help the auditor locate some of these leaks. One thing it can not do is find problems such as defective thermal pane windows.
