Tip of the day to help save the earth - 3/31/08 - 03/31/08 06:37 PM
Tip of the day to help save the earth - The last day of March, 2008!
Make your meals earth-friendly. When packing a lunch, put sandwiches, chips, etc. in reusable plastic containers instead of sandwich bags. Carry your drink in a washable thermos bottle, and your lunch in a reusable lunch container. For meals at home, put leftover food in hard plastic washable and reusable containers. (You could save glass jars and deli containers for this!)  When you go out to a restaurant to eat, Take plastic Tupperware containers with you for leftover boxes instead of using the Styrofoam box … (3 comments)

Spring Skiing - Powder Day! - 03/31/08 11:36 AM
While we usually get a few storms in March, this year has brought a lot of snow, and even a few good powder days, including TODAY, The last day of March!  Today, Alta Ski Resort got 15" of fresh pow.... A pretty impressive dump for the end of March!
Last year was a pretty mild snow year, and the resorts closed fairly early.  This year though - I think some will stay open longer.  Resorts like Alta will be closed in just a couple of weeks, due to their forest service lease, but Snowbird will likely stay open this year until … (4 comments)

Tip of the day to help save the earth - 3/30/08 - 03/30/08 10:36 AM
Tip of the day to help save the earth - 3/30/08.  This one is a definite no brainer!
"Recycle" your clothes. Once your kids grow out of their clothes, or you no longer like or fit into something, DON'T THROW IT AWAY! If you want to make money, try having a garage sale. Too much work? The Salvation Army or other clothing donation stores offer tax refunds for donated clothes. Resale shops will pay you for clothes you give them. Feeling moral? Donate your clothes to the needy or to other clothing drives for the poor.  Need Rags?  Cut up old t-shirts, … (6 comments)

Tip of the day to help save the earth! 3/29/08 - 03/29/08 10:46 AM
This is a great one that is so easy, and will save you $$ Also!
Use permanent silverware and dishes instead of paper ones. Not only will you save the earth, you'll save money! Why use disposable plastic silverware when you can buy regular ones? The last thing we need is extra garbage in landfills, and this is a great way to cut down on some of it. Use permanent kitchenware unless you absolutely have to use disposable stuff!  Also - When you're washing, make sure to think about conserving water!  A water and energy-efficient dishwasher is more efficient than hand-washing, as … (2 comments)

Tip of the day to help save the earth! 3/26/08 - 03/26/08 12:29 PM
Here is the tip of the day for today, Wednesday March 26th.
In general, don't use disposable products at all. Diapers, pens, razors, towels; they're all disposable, so there are many ways to do help the earth this way. Use cloth diapers instead of disposable plastic ones. Don't use paper towels--old t-shirts or towels work fine as messy-use rags. Those multi-use paper towels that claim to be strong enough to use again may be, but it's still cheaper to use an old rag, and the rag will probably work better! What's the use of using disposable razors if you have to buy … (8 comments)

Tip of the day to help save the earth! Easter Sunday, 2008 - 03/23/08 10:59 AM
Tip of the day for Easter Sunday 2008.  Think about this while you take your home movies and pictures of your family this Easter...
Use re-chargable batteries! Although they may cost more to buy, re-chargable batteries will save you 10 or 20 times the original cost (by not buying new batteries over and over again), and not get thrown in the trash. Also - if you MUST use the one-time use batteries, at least RECYCLE them!  Prolong the life of any batteries by using a cord (and AC adapter, if necessary) for radios, video cameras, and other appliances when possible.

Happy Easter Sunday! - 03/23/08 10:08 AM
To all of my friends on Active Rain this Easter Sunday - Happy Easter to you and your families!  How will you be spending your easter Sunday?  I am in Las Vegas, at a Karate Tournament!  I am taking a couple extra days on the end to lay in the sun in the 80 degree weather by the pool, for a much needed rest, and break from real life!  80 and sunny is quite a contrast from 20's and 30's with snow that is in Park City right now... So it's nice!
Please comment, if you're here on this early Easter … (2 comments)

Tip of the day to help save the earth! 3/22/08 - 03/22/08 11:16 AM
Tip of the day for March 22!
Buy your Easter dinner fixins' from local sources if you can!  Buy organic, and all natural ingredients, and enjoy your easter without imported products!  It's much healthier to eat organic fruits and vegetables, and ESPECIALLY meats!
Happy Easter weekend to you and your family, and as always, please feel free to comment with questions or if you have anything to add!

Tip of the day to help save the earth! 3/21/08 - 03/22/08 12:30 AM
Tip of the day to help save the earth!
Don't buy products with lots of packaging. If you see a small product (for example, a tooth brush) wrapped in five layers of plastic with a flashy cardboardy thing, all in a box made of a foam-like plastic, chances are most of the price is because of the packaging. Find a similar product with less packaging. Wouldn't a plastic wrapper or cardboard box be just as good? Also, stay away from individually wrapped candy and other products. Also, select fresh produce from display bins instead of the pre-packaged variety. The more packaging, the … (6 comments)

Tip of the day to help save the earth! - 03/20/08 11:07 AM
Tip of the day to help save the earth! This is a great one to help save water - Water is a very precious resource here in Utah, and in many other places around the country!
Put a plastic bottle (a bleach bottle works great - or a 2-liter) in your toilet. Fill it with water, put on the cap tightly, and put it in the back part of your toilet. A brick or rocks inside a plastic ziplock freezer bag also works great!  The average toilet uses 3 to 7 gallons of water per flush, so the brick or bottle will … (11 comments)

Drink GREEN Beer on St. Patty's Day! - 03/17/08 09:59 PM
More and more beer breweries are starting to think about their carbon footprint and taking steps to reduce it!  So do the earth a favor this St. Patrick's day, and Drink a few GREENER beers!
In 2003, the BROOKLYN BREWERY was the first to switch to using ALL wind energy.  Brooklyn Brewery's green power stops 335,000 pounds of carbon dioxide, 1,500 pounds of sulfur dioxide and 500 pounds of nitrogen oxide from being emitted into the atmosphere annually.
The Great Lakes Brewing Company in Cleveland Ohio uses a delivery truck that runs on 100% recycled restaurant vegetable oil!
At Sierra Nevada in California, they've … (9 comments)

Daily tip to help save the earth - March 17th - Happy St. Patrick's Day! - 03/17/08 09:38 PM
Daily tip to help save the earth for Monday, March 17th, St Patrick's Day.  With spring on it's way, and temperatures getting more and more mild, one great thing you can consider is to Plant a tree.
You can collect a few seeds, and plant them, and best of all, it's free!  Just start them in a pot, let them get about a foot tall, then put them in your yard.  Of course it never hurts to do a little research on what grows best in your climate!  If you have a few bucks to invest, go out and buy a … (1 comments)

Here is the official start of my daily"ways to save the earth" tips! I will be posting at least 4 to 5 tips per week on EASY and inexpensive things you can do to do your part!
Tip of the day for Sunday, March 16th, 2008
If you have a leaky faucet - Catch the drips!! Obviously, get it fixed ASAP!  Water is a precious resource here in Utah, and every drop counts.  For the time BETWEEN when it starts dripping, and when you get it fixed, use a cup or pan to catch the drips.  Re-USE the drips for watering a plant, … (4 comments)

More Snow - The storms just keep coming! - 03/15/08 08:19 PM
This season has been incredible here in Utah for ski and snowboard enthusiasts - The storms just keep coming.  Currently it is snowing hard, with no signs of stopping, which could equate to yet another powder day in the mountains of Utah!  There have been to many to count this year, with over a foot of new snow in the mountains in the past 24 hours being reported!  AND - With a current base of OVER 150 INCHES of snow being reported at some of the ski resorts, it looks like the snow will be here for awhile!

Outrageous Oil Prices! - 03/14/08 06:56 PM
With Oil at a RECORD $110 per barrel, what are you doing to conserve?  Here are just a few ideas, that I have posted numerous times before, most of which are very obvious, but are becoming more and more important as gas prices creep toward $4.00 per gallon!
1) Drive LESS
2) Carpool
3) Eat lunch IN, or walk to lunch
4) This year, instead of buying a BIGGER vehicle, consider something smaller, and more fuel efficient.  Hybrids are a great alternative, and the technology is only getting better!
5) When possible, Telecommute, or work from home!   Hold meetings over the internet, and conference calls instead … (2 comments)

Is Your Office DOG FRIENDLY?? - 03/13/08 08:00 PM
More and more work places these days are starting to catch on to the "dog friendly" craze!  Personally - I love it!  I think that having my dogs in the office brings something positive to the overall atmosphere here.  Also, after I have been working at my computer for a long time, it's always a nice thing to be able to see them, and pet them.  It gives me a little break to take them for a walk at lunch time, and makes me get out for some fresh air!
Some people believe it's unprofessional though, and they have a good argument!  … (5 comments)

Daylight Savings - Energy Savings? - 03/09/08 10:41 AM
Daylight Savings time is here!  Daylight savings time now begins 3 weeks earlier, and ends 1 week later than it has traditionally.  This change was made because studies show that it will help to save energy.   Personally, I LOVE the extra hour in the evenings!  It makes the days feel so much longer... (as soon as we adjust to losing one hour of sleep!)
I found a great site for the history of daylight savings, why we do it, when, etc.  If you're interested, check out this link!

Epic Spring Skiing in Park City! - 03/08/08 07:52 PM
With the HUGE SNOWPACK we have here in the Utah Ski Resorts, this year promises to be one of the best “spring skiing” years we’ve had in a long time!  There’s nothing better than waking up on a beautiful, sunny day and hitting the slopes.  You can wear fewer layers, sit in the sun outside during lunch, and just enjoy the outdoors in general on days like this!  Sure, the snow might be a little slushy at the bottom of the mountain, but all in all, it is pretty nice and soft.  It gets you thinking about summer, and the warm … (1 comments)

Utah's Poor Air Quality! Park City's Clean Air! - 03/06/08 01:57 PM
Several times in the past couple of months, Areas of Utah have been rated as having some of the WORST air quality in the country.  This is due to our inversions, and also to the high rate of pollution in some of our cities.  Salt Lake County, Utah County and the Logan/Cache Valley areas get these inversions.  Click on this link to read about how inversions are created, and how they affect air quality.   http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/slc/climate/TemperatureInversions.php
The Utah Division of Air Quality is a great source of CURRENT conditions in Utah.  You can also have email updates when the air quality starts … (1 comments)

For the Dog Lovers out there... - 03/05/08 04:22 PM
Here's one for all of you dog lovers out there - This is SOO cute.  I COMPLETELY disagree with anyone who says that dogs are not smart.  Granted - Some are smarter than others, but this is amazing... and definitely worth checking out!

A New Concept from Porsche - A HYBRID! - 03/05/08 08:04 AM
Porsche will be releasing the first (non-hybrid) models of the PANAMERA in Late 2009, with a Hybrid version soon to follow.  There have also been murmurings about a hybrid version of the Porsche Cayenne SUV as well, but the one that caught my attention is this new Panamera!  It's a totally new model from Porsche.   Perhaps this car will capture a whole NEW breed of hybrid drivers...

True Story about True Love! - 03/03/08 04:44 PM
These two guys reared this lion from a baby in England but the authorities would not allow them to keep it once it reached maturity so they were forced to give it up, they took it back to Africa and placed it in a wildlife sanctuary. A year later they went to see it and weretold it would not remember them.
There's no sound, but look at the picture first and then watch the video .

I thought this was really cute, and I wanted to pass it on, so enjoy :)
