The 2012 Hurricane Season began today, June 1st in Florida and will be with us until November 30th this autumn.

On June 1st the 2012 Hurricane Season began. Let's hope that this year will be a quiet one. Though it would be nice is some mild tropical storms or depressions would swing by to drop off some much needed rain here in Florida.
The National Hurricane Center has a hurricane tracking map that you can download in PDF format. Print it up, put it on your fridge or bulletin board, and you can monitor any storms that might be approaching our area. Kind of fun to do as long as the storms do not get too close.

real estate: After a Rise, Average Mortgage Interest Rates Settle Back Below 4% Again - 03/29/12 11:50 AM
Today, 3/29/2012, Freddie Mac reported that the average mortgage interest rate for 30 year fixed-rate mortgages was 3.99%, down from 4.08% last week. The average interest rate for 15 year fixed-rate mortgages was 3.23%, down from 3.30% from last week. A year ago the 30 year rate was 4.86%. Nice to see the rates go down rather than continue upward. Four percent sure sounds good to me and a lot of my buyers. Sellers like it too since it means more people can afford to purchase their homes!

We certainly had a better year in 2011 than we had had since the start of the recession. Many retirees looking for vacation or retirements homes, and many local buyers who wanted to take advantage of the low prices and VERY low mortgage interest rates. As a consequence, my sales improved. Not to the levels we had back in the mid 2000's, but we are getting there. And we are hearing more and more good news about our economy and that bodes well for 2012!

Today, 3/15/2012, Freddie Mac reported that the average mortgage interest rate for 30 year fixed-rate mortgages was 3.92%, up from 3.88% last week. The average interest rate for 15 year fixed-rate mortgages was 3.16%, up from 3.13% from last week. A year ago the 30 year rate was 4.76%. Current rates still remain historically low and the Federal Reserve said this week that they have no intentions at this time of raising rates before 2014. Yesterday, 3/1/2012, Freddie Mac reported that the average mortgage interest rate for 30 year fixed-rate mortgages was 3.90%, down from 3.95% last week. The average interest rate for 15 year fixed-rate mortgages was 3.17%, down from 3.19% from last week. A year ago the 30 year rate was 4.87%! Take advantage of these rates if you can! On Monday, August 22nd, students and teachers will return to their classes in the public schools of Pasco County, Florida for the 2011-2012 academic year. When I was teaching here two decades ago, we started after Labor Day. And many schools around the country still do. But several years ago, statewide exams were created and it was felt that more time was needed to prepare for them. So the beginning of the school year was moved up by several weeks. Now it has shifted closer to where it used to be.

Today, 7/28/2011, Freddie Mac reported that the average mortgage interest rate for 30 year fixed-rate mortgages was 4.55%, up from 4.52% last week. The average interest rate for 15 year fixed-rate mortgages was 3.66%, unchanged from last week. A year ago the 30 year rate was 4.54%.
Broken record playing. Again mixed economic data kept interest rates from moving much at all. I am wondering if this will still be true if the Congress of the United States cannot get its act together and we default on our country's debts. Today, 3/24/2011, Freddie Mac reported that the average mortgage interest rate for 30 year fixed-rate mortgages was 4.81%, up from 4.76% a week ago. The average interest rate for 15 year fixed-rate mortgages was 4.04%, up from 3.97% last week. A year ago the 30 year rate was 4.99%. .
Even though rates did rise this week, they are still at historically low levels that make a home purchase more affordable for a lot of people.
