Fire - 06/29/10 11:39 PM
Fire
What do you see in the pictures below? Fire of course but try to look beyond the obvious. Do you see death and destruction or do you see a hot meal? Do you see fury and chaos or do you see a warm house. Do you see despair or do you see hope?
Rapid oxidation of the wood in the process of combustion was probably not your first answer although that’s exactly what the camp fire is in the photographs. The point is that things are often more about what they represent than what they are by strict definition.

Boulder Columbine Unity Flower Garden - 06/29/10 07:13 PM
Boulder Columbine Unity Flower Garden
The flower garden at Columbine Unity Church in Boulder Colorado is really beautiful. This is the time of year when all the flowers are in bloom and the color combinations are extraordinary.
The garden sits along the walkway from the lower part of the church beside the water fountain. It’s wonderful to sit there after morning service and soak a little sun while sipping tea.

A Yellow Flower…Up Close and Personal - 06/28/10 10:38 PM
A Yellow Flower…Up Close and Personal
I took a close up of this yellow flower in the garden at Columbine Unity Church in Boulder Colorado. It was a sunny day and once again I was playing around with the digital zoom on my camera. The camera is nothing special—Nikon Coolpix,  8.1 megapixel. The key to good close-ups is holding the camera steady.
If you look closely, you’ll see a tiny insect on the photos. On the last photo there appears to be two insects. Look a little closer and you’ll see the face of Mother Nature looking back at you.

Colorado Rocky Mountain Rainbow - 06/27/10 06:36 PM
Colorado Rocky Mountain Rainbow
I encountered an incredible rainbow yesterday. I was driving on highway 93 between Golden Colorado and Boulder. It’s a beautiful drive that follows along the edge of the Front Range. There were thick black clouds out to the east over the Denver Metro area where it seemed to be raining heavily.
Across the edge of the mountains the clouds were breaking up amid intermittent sunshine and rain. I was expecting a rainbow to pop up any moment when it seemed to instantly appear. It was a brilliant spectrum of colors and very bright. Unfortunately, it was some … (5 comments)

Summer Solstice Fire Ceremony - 06/27/10 03:08 PM
Summer Solstice Fire Ceremony
I attended a summer solstice celebration at the Shepherd Valley Waldorf School in Niwot Colorado on Friday night. It was a small gathering with about a dozen adults and about the same number of kids.
The celebration was simple. We made some prayer flags and then we had a little fire ceremony. At the fire ceremony a few people spoke wishing good health and happiness to all.
Part of the ceremony is to burn something to symbolize letting go of something that is holding you back in your life. Afterwards, there was the opportunity to ‘jump’ … (3 comments)

Eye of Iris - 06/24/10 09:49 PM
Eye of Iris
Iris’ are an amazing flower. They seem to come in an endless variety of colors and color combinations. Looking down into the eye of the Iris reveals the intricate beauty of the face of nature.
The name Iris is appropriately taken from the Greek word for rainbow. When you look at the way the colors spread throughout the flower, the name really makes sense. The shape has a wondrous symmetry and elegance that radiate its beauty.
The photos below were taken from a mature Iris garden in North Boulder.

The Color Green - 06/24/10 09:09 PM
The Color Green
Green is one of my favorite colors. We see green in so many places in throughout nature. For me there is a natural feel to the color green that I find both soothing and even rejuvenating.
There is something extra special about green leaves after it rains. It is almost like they are radiating growth and health. I captured these photos a few days ago along the Boulder Creek trail just after a rain and just as it was getting dark.

The Simple Things Are the Best - 06/23/10 08:57 PM
The Simple Things Are the Best
"When we recall the past, we usually find that it is the simplest things—not the great occasions—that in retrospect give off the greatest glow of happiness." — Bob Hope
The photos below are a bunny rabbit, a flower, a humming bird and a weed. These are some of the simple things that can help bring us joy and happiness in life. I am trying to pay special attention to the simple things these days.
The pattern on a leaf or a reflection in the water can all bring a moment of joy if we can … (1 comments)

Flower Zoom - 06/22/10 10:01 PM
Flower Zoom
I love photographing flowers. Lately, I’ve been playing with the zoom on my camera. This series of photos are intended to mimic the viewer stepping up to the flowers to take a closer look.
The first photo was taken about five feet back with no zoom. The last one was taken at about two feet with the zoom maxed just before digital imaging.

Boulder Colorado Pearl Street Mall Musicians… - 06/21/10 08:45 PM
Boulder Colorado Pearl Street Mall Musicians…
I was in the Boulder Pearl Street Mall this weekend giving some out of town visitors a mini-tour. Pearl Street has always had high quality street performers and musicians, but this weekend it seemed to have risen to a whole new level.
Two groups of the many performers played like professionals. First, there were two teenage boys that played the violin like I have never seen or heard before. They were completely confident and had absolute control over their instruments. They played one classical piece after another with ease. The two had just been admitted … (4 comments)

Purple Rain… - 06/21/10 08:05 PM
Purple Rain…
I took these photos a few days ago just after it rained here in Boulder Colorado. I was attempting to get close-up of the rain drops. After looking at them I am fascinated with the color contrasts with shades of purple and green.
I am not sure what kind of flower it is but I really liked the way it held the water drops. If you look closely, you can even see reflections in the drops.

Don’t Bug Me… - 06/20/10 09:16 PM
Don’t Bug Me…
I photographed a thistle along beside a trail in the foothills above Boulder. I was amazed at all the activity inside. There were several bugs crawling around seemingly intoxicated by the nectar.
I’ve been enjoying taking close-up shots lately. These turned out quite nice catching the fibers of the thistle along with the details of the little critters.

Happy Father’s Day… - 06/20/10 06:37 PM
Happy Father’s Day…
I can’t resist getting on the Father’s Day bandwagon. I never really knew my father—only met him once before he died. While I can’t change the past, I honor him on this day for his role in bringing me into the world. And if I had not come into the world, my children would not be here either.
I am the very proud father of three. The first photo below is my two daughters. Shayna on the left is 15 and Ashley on the right is 19. Sean, below, is Shayna’s twin brother.

Boulder Integral Incubator - 06/16/10 12:05 AM
Boulder Integral Incubator

I just completed the second day of a 5 day conference called the Integral Incubator held at Boulder Integral in Boulder Colorado. The program is all about helping attendees to launch their personal project, dream or life transition.
The support exercises and coaching follows the Integral theory and practice developed by Ken Wilber--a world famous philosopher and spiritual teacher living in Denver. Ken has written over 30 books.
In simple terms, Ken’s work supports a world view based on multiple simultaneous perspectives: individual, collective, interior and exterior. Every type of human experience can be mapped into … (3 comments)

Life on the Edge… - 06/15/10 12:12 AM
Life on the Edge…
Rock climbing is a big sport here in Boulder Colorado. This shot was taken at a popular climbing spot off Canyon Blvd. just outside the west side of town. It’s really a majestic spot with Boulder Creek cutting a path directly below the cliff.
I admire how the climbers get up there but it’s just not my sport. Dangling from a rope is not my idea of a good time. I need both feet on something, preferably the ground.

Oh Dear, it's a Deer... - 06/14/10 11:57 PM
Oh Dear, it's a Deer...
I was hiking in Settler’s Park on the west side of Boulder a couple of weeks ago with a friend and we spotted something moving in the distance. We could see that it was a critter of some sort but the color blended so well with the background that we couldn’t quite make out what it was.
When we got closer we could see that it was a small white-tail deer. My friend was a little startled at first until we could see it was a deer and not a coyote. There are a lot of … (8 comments)

Boulder Creek or Boulder River? - 06/11/10 09:02 PM
Boulder Creek or Boulder River?
A combination of high heat causing rapidly melting snow in the high country and heavy rain over the past couple of days has caused unusually high water levels in Colorado creeks and rivers.
Here in Boulder our own Boulder Creek is looking more like a river than a creek. The water is extremely high creating a potential hazard to hikers and bicyclists along the creek trails.
The water in Boulder Creek is quite high and moving rapidly. If you are hiking or walking near the creek, take extra precaution to stay back away from the water’s … (9 comments)

A Boulder Colorado Purple Iris - 06/11/10 05:23 PM
Purple Iris
My step-daughter, Reetta, graduated from New Vista High School in Boulder a couple of weeks ago. A celebration party was held at a friend’s house afterward.  There were beautiful gardens with lots of Iris’.
I took tons of photos of the flowers, and the people too, but the flowers were extraordinary. The photo below is a purple iris that was growing beside the coy pond.

Heaven and Earth: As Above, so Below… - 06/10/10 03:48 PM
Heaven and Earth: As Above, so Below…
I took these two photographs a couple of weeks ago on a hike to Cub Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park in Larimer County Colorado. These are definitely two of the more unique photographs I have taken. The first is looking up at the sky. The second captures the sky’s reflection in the water. The reflections are not identical because I couldn't locate the exact cloud in the sky that was being reflection.
The cloud I photographed reflects perfectly in the still water except for the ripples of a water bug. The weeds and … (7 comments)

Colorado Clouds - 06/08/10 07:49 PM
Colorado Clouds
I like taking photos of different shapes and contrasts in nature. A few days ago I got some great cloud shots. The interesting thing about clouds is that no two are alike.
And if you look carefully, you can always see something in the pattern. I find it especially interesting how different people see different things.
What do you see in the clouds below?

Yampa River Water Fractal - 06/08/10 07:18 PM
Yampa River Water Fractal
I was watching the Yampa River in Steamboat Springs Colorado rush over a rock a few days ago and I was captivated by the patterns of the ripples. There was an unusual coloration of the rock and the combination of the changing ripples and the light seemed to have a fractal effect.
The simple things in nature are sometimes the most beautiful to behold.

High Temps in the High Country Causes Flooding - 06/08/10 06:11 PM
High Temps in the High Country Causes Flooding
My wife and I spent the weekend in Steamboat Springs Colorado. We got a nice little cabin right on the Yampa River at Steamboat Springs Campground. On the first day the temperature shot up over 90 degrees. The rapid snow melt caused so much run-off on the first night there the water rose about 6 inches causing flooding all around our cabin. All across the state the rivers and creeks are unseasonably high.
The water in Steamboat Springs Campground rose even higher on the second night but we were never in any danger. … (3 comments)

Dandelions—Friend or Foe, They Come and Go… - 06/07/10 01:44 PM
Dandelions—Friend or Foe, They Come and Go…
Dandelions are generally considered as something to get rid of from the yard. Yet on closer look, they are truly a beautiful flower. The colors are bright during the flowering cycle and the way they transform is almost magical. Each little seed turns into a miniature wind-sail that eventually launches to discover its own destiny.
Such are the days of our lives. We are born and our flower opens to the sun of life as we grow. Eventually, we leave our home to discover our own world—a cycle that repeats itself over and … (9 comments)

Colorado Rocky Mountain High - 06/03/10 04:57 PM
Colorado Rocky Mountain High
To be in the presence of the Rock Mountains—to see them, touch them and feel them—is to really understand what John Denver was singing about. I don’t think there is anything quite like it in the world.
These shots were taken inside Rocky Mountain National Park in Larimer County. The first photo is my absolute favorite. It seems to capture multiple dimensions in a single shot. Yet it doesn’t come close to the actual experience of what it’s like to be there. The last photo shows a stand of Aspen trees in the foreground.

Colorado Energy Star Mortgage - 06/03/10 02:37 PM
Colorado Energy Star Mortgage
The Bank of Colorado, in partnership with the Governor’s Energy Office is offering a special financing product to Colorado residents. The Energy Star Mortgage offers qualified participants one discount point on mortgage rates to fund the purchase of green homes or the refi and green renovation of existing homes.
This is an extraordinary program that overlays existing loan products including conventional 30 year, FHA or 203k mortgage loans. In addition to current low rates, the discount point is used to buy-down the interest even further. With this program homeowners can fund energy-efficient upgrades, obtain a lower interest … (0 comments)

Lily Pads Reaching for the Sun - 06/03/10 02:36 PM
Lily Pads Reaching for the Sun
Last week I hiked to Cub Lake in the Rocky Mountain National Park. It was a five mile hike round-trip from the train entrance.  The lake was set among a very peaceful setting surrounded by spectacular mountain ranges. The entrance to the park is in Larimer County just a short drive from Boulder.
The lily pads were just beginning to emerge. You could see them rising up from under the water stretching to reach the sun. I was captivated by the simplicity of their beauty. Soon, the lake will be half full of them.

Rocky Mountain Flowers - 06/02/10 08:36 PM
Rocky Mountain Flowers
Lily Lake is just a short distance from the base of Long’s Peak in Larimer County Colorado. I took these photos on a hike around the lake a few days ago. It's about a 45 minute to an hour's drive from Boulder depending on what route you take.
I was playing around with the extended zoom on the camera and managed to squeeze off a couple of good shots. I love photographing flowers and the extended zoom takes it to a whole new level.
The fibers and finer detail really come alive in the photos. The last … (10 comments)

Longs Peak in Larimer County Colorado - 06/01/10 02:27 PM
Longs Peak in Larimer County Colorado
I took these photos of Long’s Peak on the drive up to Rocky Mountain National Park last week. At 14,256 feet above sea level Long’s Peak is among the highest in Colorado.
There is still a lot of snow above the tree line which is approximately 11,000 feet. The photos capture the peak from two different angles—both from Highway 34 leading into Estes Park.

Larimer County Colorado Saint Malo Retreat - 06/01/10 02:25 PM
Larimer County Colorado Saint Malo Retreat
I stopped for photos at Saint Malo Retreat on my way to Rock Mountain National Park last Friday. There is a modern facility there, but the attraction for me is the old church and the statue of Jesus.
The old chapel was conceived in 1916 but it wasn’t built until 1935. Thousands of visitors come to the chapel every year. Pope John Paul II visited the chapel in 1993 during a trip to Denver.
The photos show the chapel in addition to the large statue of Jesus which stands high on a rock next … (1 comments)

What is It? - 06/01/10 01:37 PM
What is It?
Can you spot the critter in the photo? What do you think it is?
Hint: The photo was taken in Rocky Mountain National Park on Friday of last week.
I went up with a friend for a day hike in the park. The weather was great and the water levels were quite high from the melting snows. The wildlife was openly moving about.

Bolder Boulder 10k Race - 06/01/10 01:19 PM
Bolder Boulder 10k Race
The Bolder Boulder 10k race was held here in Boulder Colorado yesterday. Officials said approximately 53,700 citizen runners and walkers participated in the race. The professional race was held after the citizens had cleared the course. Named America’s best 10k event by Runner’s World magazine’s December 2009 issue, the Bolder Boulder is billed as one of the largest Memorial Day events in the country.
The race started near 30th street and Iris and then followed a scenic tour of Boulder before ending at the Folsom Field Stadium on the Colorado University Campus. The event concludes with … (0 comments)
