Long’s Peak: On Top of the Summit at 14,255 ft - 09/30/10 05:35 PM
Long’s Peak: On Top of the Summit
These are the photos I took while on the summit of Long's Peak in Rocky Mountain National Park. All of the other photos I've posted before now were taken on the way up. In the photo of me the marker under my foot reads 14,255 feet above sea level.
I stayed on the summit for a while and had a short but deeply fulfilling meditation while there. It was a feeling of pure elation with every breath.
My ecstasy was tempered with a mild terror in knowing I would once again have to … (21 comments)

Long’s Peak: From the Key Hole to the Gulley - 09/29/10 10:06 PM
Long’s Peak: From the Key Hole to the Gulley
This set of photos is from the Keyhole, up the gulley and around the East side of the peak. This was the final leg of my hike to the summit of Long's Peak in Rocky Mountain National Park. This was the most challenging part of the hike both going up and going down.
I faced many fears during this part and at one point I almost turned around. There were many places along this part of the hike where I was just one step away from going over the side of … (5 comments)

A Really Big Shoe… - 09/27/10 06:33 PM
A Really Big Shoe…
On the hike up to Long’s Peak in Rocky Mountain National Park I encountered an interesting natural artifact on top of one of the peaks. It sits on the south side of Long’s Peak about half way up the gulley that leads to the ledge along the east side.
The rock looks like a giant shoe and it sits on top of a peak at an elevation of about 13,500 feet. It is amazingly balanced on top of the peak like a natural sculpture placed by a hand much larger than any human you could imagine.
I … (8 comments)

Long’s Peak Hike: The Keyhole - 09/23/10 03:18 PM
Long’s Peak Hike: The Keyhole
This is the second set of photos from my hike to the summit of Long's Peak in Rocky Mountain National Park. This set was taken just before and just after the Keyhole. The Keyhole is quite large and it's no small feat to climb up to it.
Before the Keyhole it was a nice hike. After the Keyhole everything became serious: serious views, serious elevation change, and very serious danger. From the Keyhole onward you are literally one step away from falling over steep cliffs.
The views after the Keyhole are breathtaking. The trail is marked … (7 comments)

Long’s Peak Summit Hike: Approaching Boulder Field - 09/20/10 07:01 PM
Long’s Peak Summit Hike: Approaching Boulder Field
Here are some more photos from my hike to the summit of Long’s Peak in Rocky Mountain National Park last Friday. This set captures the approach to Boulder Field at 12,760 feet nearly 6 miles into the hike. As the name implies, Boulder Field is a massive field of giant size boulders. There is a base camp there so you can actually camp out and hike the summit the next morning instead of doing it all in one day as I did.
Here we get the first good shots of the face of Long’s … (10 comments)

Long’s Peak Hike: Before Boulder Field - 09/19/10 06:43 PM
Long’s Peak Hike: Before Boulder Field
Here are a few shots I took on my hike to Long’s Peak Summit. These photographs were taken before reaching the area known as Boulder Field, which, as the name implies is a massive field of huge boulders.
I was about 3 hours into the hike when these pictures were taken. Everywhere you turn your head there were massive mountain ranges and huge piles of rocks. By this time I was beginning to feel very small. I got smaller as the day progressed.

Long’s Peak Sunrise - 09/19/10 06:14 PM
Long’s Peak Sunrise
I hiked to the summit of Long’s Peak in Rocky Mountain National Park on Friday. I signed in at the trail head at 4:30 am. I was able to photograph the sunrise a little over two hours into the hike about 500 feet above the tree line.
It was a beautiful beginning of an incredible day that I will never forget. The entire hike took me 14 hours to complete. I’ll be posting photos of the hike in coming blogs.

Long’s Peak Summit - 09/18/10 08:14 PM
Long’s Peak Summit
I hiked to the summit of Long’s Peak in Rocky Mountain National Park yesterday. It was an incredible experience…more than I can even put into words at the moment.  For now I’ll just say I am especially grateful to have made it back in one piece.
I’ve got lots of photos which I’ll post later. In the photo shown here I’m standing on the highest point with the US Geological Survey marker under my left foot reading 14,255 feet above sea level.

Happy Llamas - 09/13/10 10:47 PM
Happy Lamas
On my Saturday morning bicycle ride I encountered a field full of lamas. It was a beautiful sight after so many smoke filled days and after not being able to ride for a week.
Lamas seem like such peaceful and happy creatures. They don’t really make any noise and just meander around eating the grass. I know they are raised for their wool but they seem to make nice pets too.

Colorado Fires Nearly Contained - 09/13/10 07:07 PM
Colorado Fires Nearly Contained
The Fourmile Canyon fire in Boulder is nearly 90% contained. Officials are now investigating the possibility that the fire may have started in a resident’s fire pit that was not fully extinguished.
Meanwhile, a few miles north the Loveland fire also seems to be under control after burning 900 acres. The fire started on Sunday morning. Fortunately, the crews and resources from the Boulder fire were quickly able to get the upper hand on that one.
Although the fires are mostly under control heavy aircraft are still flying overhead throughout the day. Hopefully, life will get back … (8 comments)

Another Colorado Wildfire 9-12-10 - 09/12/10 06:21 PM
Another Colorado Wildfire 9-12-10
As I left church this morning I was shocked to see another huge plume of smoke billowing North of Boulder. I drove north up 75th street and then west on Hygiene Road. I took a few photos along the way. I noticed the helicopters and tankers were already moving in.
It’s is almost unbelievable to have another fire like this right on the heels of the other one. The good news is there is a large number of firefighters and resources in the general area from the Boulder Fire.
I don’t know much about this fire … (8 comments)

Boulder Colorado Saturday Sunshine - 09/11/10 06:55 PM
Boulder Colorado Saturday Sunshine
It is a beautiful sun shiny day here in Boulder Colorado. When I stepped outside early this morning I could not see or smell any smoke from the forest fire. It is the first time since the fire started that it has been so clear.
Because of the smoke I hadn’t bicycled since before the fire. Since the air was clear today I decided to go out for a spin. I bicycled 35 miles along the Front Range but I did not go up into the mountains.
Officials now report they are starting to get the … (10 comments)

Boulder Forest Fire: More Evacuations Possible - 09/09/10 08:42 PM
Boulder Forest Fire: More Evacuations Possible
Officials hope to achieve up to 40% containment of the Boulder Forest Fire overnight but the optimistic outlook it tempered by a prediction of high winds in the area. Weather reports are warning of wind gusts up to 50+ mph this evening blowing out of the west directly toward the city of Boulder.
As a result fire officials are warning of the possibility for additional evacuations. The area of concern is within Boulder city limits West of Broadway, North of Spruce and South of Dakota Ridge. Visit the Boulder DailyCamera website for additional information.

Boulder Sunrise—We’re Still Here 9-8-10 - 09/08/10 09:10 PM
Boulder Sunrise—We’re Still Here  9-8-10
Here are some sunrise photos from Boulder this morning. I was up on the side of the mountain around 6am. The smell of smoke from the forest fire was extra strong this morning but it wasn’t until I got up on the mountain that I could see how thick the blanket of smoke really was.
The ‘inversion layer’ caused the smoke to drop close to the ground in the cool night air. As the sun came up the smoke started to rise and it became even more difficult to breathe.

Boulder Forest Fire Time Lapse Night Video - 09/08/10 08:30 PM
Boulder Forest Fire Time Lapse Night Video
The time lapse video below of the Boulder Forest fire was shot Monday Night. In it you can see the span of the fire as the flames race over the mountainside. The small moving lights in the foreground are emergency vehicles navigating the mountain roads.
The Boulder County Emergency Services will meet with the Sheriff’s department, Fire Managers and other officials will at a community meeting at 7:30 pm this evening at Coor’s Field on Colorado University Campus. The rain has stopped and the fire is still not classified at any level of containment.

Rain in Boulder - 09/08/10 08:05 PM
Rain in Boulder
It’s raining in Boulder. Ordinarily that would be no big news but for the 300+ firefighters and the many people displaced by the Fourmile Canyon fire, it’s a much needed relief. The rain is not super hard but at this point anything is better than nothing.
The sheriff’s department updated figures today reporting 140 structures destroyed and 54 damaged. Four people are still reported missing.

Boulder Fourmile Canyon Fire Update Tuesday 9-7-10 @ 5pm - 09/07/10 07:29 PM
Boulder Fourmile Canyon Fire Update Tuesday 9-7-10 @ 5pm
Here are a couple of more photos of the fire that I took this morning. The first photo was taken in town near Glenwood and 30th St. looking up behind the Safeway in North Boulder. The second was taken from the front deck of my apartment.
The last three photos were taken from the from Lost Gulch above Boulder overlooking the fire. The helicopters are dumping water and the tankers are dropping fire retardant.
The latest reports are over 7,000 acres burned, 63 stuctures lost with only 50% of the burn … (8 comments)

Boulder Fourmile Canyon Fire Update - 09/07/10 01:52 AM
Boulder Fourmile Canyon Fire Update
This afternoon I watched as the sky grew orange and the sun was masked by the dense smoke from the wildfire. Around 4:30 I drove to Settler's Park and was turned away. I then drove to Lost Gultch above Flagstaff where over 100 people had gathered.
It was a horrific scene. I have never seen anything quite like it. With my binoculars I witnessed 8-10 structures go up in flames. Eventually, the tankers flew in and began dropping fire retardant, but it hardly seemed to make a difference--the fire continued to grow for the 3 hours … (4 comments)

Ash is falling from the sky. The smell of smoke permeates everything. The sky is yellow and the sun is a strange burnt red color.
Early reports are that several structures have been destroyed and a fire truck burned over. Evacuations have been ordered for Four Mile Canyon and Sunshine Canyon.
More to follow later today…

Trail Ridge Road Bike Ride in Rocky Mountain Nat’l Park (Part 3/3) - 09/03/10 10:52 PM
Trail Ridge Road Bike Ride in Rocky Mountain Nat’l Park (Part 3/3)
This is the third set of photos on my ride up Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park. There was road work just before the Alpine Visitor Center which is where I turned around. There was about a 20 minute wait for construction equipment on arrival and about 5 minutes on departure.
The ride down was quite dangerous at times as I picked up speed. The wind gusts made it challenging to keep control of the bike. . I had a couple of close calls but managed to … (5 comments)

Trail Ridge Road Bike Ride in Rocky Mountain Nat’l Park (Part 2/3) - 09/02/10 11:18 PM
Trail Ridge Road Bike Ride in Rocky Mountain Nat’l Park (Part 2/3)
This is the second set of photos of my ride up Trail Ridge Road in Road in Rocky Mountain National Park. The total distance was just over 54 miles with nearly 5 hours of ride time.
This photo set starts just above the tree line around 11,000 feet. After leaving the Rainbow Curve vista, the wind picked up. Within a few miles above the tree line, the wind was absolutely brutal. It was a combination head-wind and side-wind. The temperature was around 45 degrees so it was cold too. … (2 comments)

Trail Ridge Road Bike Ride in Rocky Mountain Nat’l Park (Part 1/3) - 09/02/10 09:07 PM
Trail Ridge Road Bike Ride in Rocky Mountain Nat’l Park (Part 1/3)
Yesterday I rode my bicycle up Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park. It was a 50 mile ride round trip that took me up above 12,000 feet. That’s a 5,000 foot climb from where I started at the Este’s Park visitor center.
This is the first set of three sets of photos I will post. In this set I capture the climb up to the tree line which is around 11,000 feet. Some of the photos show the road I came up and the valley where … (1 comments)
