The county seat of McCurtain County is Idabel. It is the largest city / town in the extreme southeast corner of Oklahoma with a population of about 7000. Idabel is only about 20 miles from Texas and about 20 miles from Arkansas, just a couple of hours from the Dallas – Fort Worth, Texas area and about 3 to 3 ½ hours from the Oklahoma City area or from Tulsa, Oklahoma according to Internet travel sites. The very extreme southeast corner of Oklahoma has been a long drive from just about anywhere for a long, long time. The highways have been 2 laners with narrow shoulders and sometimes with blind spots, winding, or hilly enough that there's just not any passing lanes. They will call me and ask why they can't find waterfront property in S E Oklahoma and when I tell them about Lake Raymond Gary, where you can own the shoreline and catch record size bass, crappie, and catfish, they do not have a clue as to where it's at.
