The Catawba Valley Camera Club in Hickory NC has been around since 1947 and they are always looking for new members that love photography. They have meetings the first and third Wednesdays from 7 - 9pm in the North Annex of the Arts Center in Hickory (SALT Block). Come and learn from some of the best photographers in the Hickory area. The City Of Hickory's Public Art Commission brought color to Hickory in a unique way this year. Local artists were chosen to paint 21 metal benches to be placed around town. See my first installment of "Art On The Bench" Local Artists Bring Color To Hickory NC - Part 1 for photos of the first 4 benches on Union Square in downtown Hickory. Thanks to my sweet hubby, I was able to find and photograph 6 more "art benches" on Saturday around Hickory. Early in 2008, the City of Hickory's Public Art Commission began the search for local artists to participate in a new program called "Art On The Bench". Artists submitted designs for the benches and the PAC made 21 colorful choices. The benches are now complete and placed at various locations around Hickory. Here are the first 4 benches located in beautiful downtown Hickory on Union Square. I will be sharing the other benches in Part 2 and Part 3 since I am still trying to locate them all..

Tweetsie Railroad has been around since I was a kid and that's been a really LONG time!! It's so well known in the South, just the mention of "Tweetsie" will bring a grin to most folk's face. The Tweetsie Train is a steam locomotive with a distintive loud, shrill whistle - then the conducter yells - ALL ABOARD !! It's not your run of the mill theme park, it's smaller, more personal and less crowded. Hickory NC is a pretty diverse area, a medium sized city with small town charm and friendly folks. Beautiful surroundings at the foot of the Blue Ridge mountains but still an easy commute to Charlotte NC. We have recreation areas, Lake Hickory and a short drive to Lake Norman and Lake James. The community and the Economic Development Commission has certainly been seeking new markets to bring jobs and divesity to our area.. Catawba County NC which includes Hickory, Newton and Conover recently landed a large Target warehouse which is currently under construction and Convergys - a 450 person call center. hickory nc: Classic Edsels & Custom Cars Coming To Hickory NC

The classic Edsel still has quite a following. One of the largest Edsel clubs with members from all over the world will be coming to Hickory NC, July 23-26. The yearly rally will be held at the Hickory Park Inn & Gateway Center. The public is invited to come out. These Edsel enthusiasts love showing off their classic vehicles, especially on Saturday - 7/26/08. That's when all the cars will be shined up for judging. Wow - my hometown - Hickory NC hits the big time tonight on the History Channel's show Modern Marvels - 9pm.. Well, I suppose it would be nice to be recognized for something other than - underwear... more specifically socks - which seems a little better.. Hickory has long been known for it's furniture and hosiery manufacturing and many of these companies have survived by embracing technology and new approaches. Our local Catawba Valley Community College has a Hosiery Technology center which will be featured tonight on Modern Marvels.. They wanted to see the latest technology for socks and panythose.
