We experienced 2 days of 80+ degrees early this week! Those warm days followed an exceptionally nice weekend to get all the outdoor chores started for the spring. Today it is cooler and a little wetter but it sure is nice and green around here. Trees are leafing out, Flathead lake is slowly rising to full pool and valley residents can be seen making every effort to get outside and enjoy our activities.

Weather: for some reason this is the first thing that comes to mind this week. After many sunny and warm (for winter) days, it is snowing this morning. Still warm and may end up raining in the valley but the ski hills should benefit. It has been a slow start to skiing this year. Big Mtn received 7" the other night which led to avalanche control measures. This weekend should see the start to more stable snow fall and better conditions. Flathead Valley activities are ramping up quickly leading to Christmas:
Tonight, December 2 - Kalispell ArtWalk from 5-9pm
Shepherd's Hand Clinic in Whitefish has a benefit tonight at Christ Lutheran Church. Free to attend but donations accepted. This clinic has been in place for many years helping those without insurance. One of my personal favorite physicians, Jay Erickson, and his wife started this program and have donated untold hours to helping those in need of medical care in our valley. Shepherdshand.com. The benefit starts at 7pm.

Well, I guess winter is here. Beautiful sunshine on the new snow today after off and on blizzard type weather the last couple of days. Whitefish Mountain Resort opens December 3 for skiing so getting some nice assistance from the weather. From the valley floor, the slopes are clearly covered in white.
Saturday morning drive into Whitefish to get a fleece jacket for the little house dog. He didn't look kindly at the cold weather when he needed to head outside to do his duty. Tailwaggers had just the thing, a locally made fleece coat for him. Then a walk over … (0 comments)

Ah summertime in the Flathead Valley! Daily temps have been in the 80's. A nice summer thunder storm roared through last night and then the sun came back out. Haying has begun in the valley with an abundant crop due to the early season rains.
Going to the Sun road in Glacier National Park opens next Wed. A record late opening due to the record snow pack. I plan on taking a drive up to see all the snow that is still covering many of the trails.

Been busy working with 3 real estate deals in the works, one closed yesterday. Very happy sellers as I sold their home myself to a nice lady from Texas. Squeezing in some recreation in my free time.
Drove up to Whitefish Mtn yesterday afternoon. Used our season ski passes to jump on Chair 2 for a ride up the mountain. Hiked around a bit looking for huckleberries with no success. After weeks of rain and from 15-20 degrees colder than normal, I am thrilled to report that summer weather has come! 80 degrees and sun for the next couple of days. Sometimes in NW Montana, that is how it works. We go abruptly from 1 season to the next. Hay crop should be great this year so need to be thankful for the cool damp days. The garden should start looking like it is thriving with the heat, instead of plants looking pretty pathetic.

It is a sunny Friday in the Flathead. Whitefish Mountain Resort ends this awesome season on Sunday. The annual Pond Skim event is on Saturday. People dress up and use all kids of contraptions to get down to a pond on skis or whatever and try and skim across without sinking in the icy cold water. I was driving up today to get a few last runs in and saw something that gave me a chuckle. Between Kalispell and Whitefish a guy was riding a bike along Hwy 93 with a snow board strapped to his back. What a ski season! 300" have fallen and the summit has a 134" base. Only 49" has fallen in the valley so the snow is where it should be. Skied this morning and it was wonderful! Sun, smell of burgers on the barbecue, great condition. Whitefish Mountain Resort got 8" the other night and 1" last night so plenty of good stuff to go around for the slim crowd enjoying it today. After a little trip to relax and refresh, I am back and happy to announce it is still ski season! So much snow on Big Mountain this year. Kalispell has had only 49" which is below normal. You would never guess that though with so much still on the ground.
The Daily Interlake had articles this week about how the Flathead Valley benefits from our Canadian neighbors. With only 2 hrs between us and the border and the exchange rate being beneficial, Canadians continue to shop, ski, golf, use our medical facilities and purchase homes. What a beautiful week it has been in the valley! Blue skies, awesome mountain views. Yes, it was very cold at the beginning of the week but very mild today. It would be a great day to hit Whitefish Mountain resort. New snow and clear skies, unfortunately, some of us have to work this weekend. Not complaining about a buyer flying in today, but sure would have liked to ski :) Whitefish Carnival parade is this afternoon - always fun.

Local government updates:
Residents in the "donut" area of Whitefish are making an effort to get an initiative on ballot regarding who - county, or city - should be able to rule on their planning and zoning issues.
Whitefish ice cream shop owners of Mrs. Spoonovers have fought hard for their sign rights on the building in court and won but now will be closing due to financial reasons. Very sad ending to the little guy finally getting justice.
Flathead County Planning is approving a special zoning area in Lakeside near Flathead Lake.

Took a great Sunday scenic drive the other fall day. North to Whitefish, continue to Eureka, left to Rexford and along the Kookanusa reservoir, south to Hwy 2. Stopped to visit the dam. Beautiful fall colors and scenic drive. Had no idea there were marinas along the way. People out fishing.
Our local von Trapp kids will soon be seen on the Oprah show. They are decendents of Maria von Trapp of Sound of Music fame. We saw them when they were much younger at a performance in the valley. Fantastic voices!

There is snow on the hills! A few more days to take advantage of the Whitefish Mountain Resort season pass discount to get up there and ski. This is an La Nina year so should be lots of snow. I have my pass, do you have yours?
Last weekend to drive the Going to the Sun Road in Glacier National Park from West Glacier. Logan's Pass access will be closed to enable crews to get more work done before winter.
