Agricultural land values continue to inflate but at a more moderate pace. Low interest rates help as well as liquid farmers. Belief that above-average crop prices will persist helps fuel the rising land prices too. Creighton University’s latest Farmland-Price Index¹ eased a second straight month to 64.6 in May, from 69.4 in April. The May reading extends the land price expansion to 28 consecutive months. A reading above 50 suggests prices are rising. Bankers in the Creighton survey say land appreciation rates rose in Kansas again. The Confidence Index, which tracks bankers’ expectations for the rural economy six months out, eased slightly to 60.2 in May, from

Kansas may be more well known for sunflowers and wheat but we do have a solid dairy industry. There are about 400 dairy farms in Kansas. In a 1938 Act it required a marketing quota for the 2013 wheat crop if the total supply of the crop would likely be excessive without the quota, so the Secretary of Agriculture decides by April 15, 2012, whether a quota is needed. agriculture: USDA Extends Deadline for CRP Emergency Haying and Approves Additional Counties for CRP Emergency Grazing in Kansas - 09/02/11 09:54 AM
The USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) in Kansas announced that due to drought conditions, USDA has extended the deadline for emergency haying of Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) acres for all Kansas counties that are approved for emergency haying. Emergency haying of land enrolled in CRP has been extended through September 30, 2011. Participants must leave at least 50 percent of each field or contiguous fields unhayed for wildlife. Hay must be removed from the field within 30 days from end of the haying period. Hay cannot be sold. Producers without livestock may rent or lease the haying privileges. The following counties

The Kansas Department of Agriculture Statistics released the Agricultural Prices and Crop Index. KANSAS: The All Crops Index in April is up 14 points from March and up 126 points from 2010. Wheat prices in mid-April, at $7.80 per bushel, are down 4 cents from March but $3.67 above last April. Corn prices in mid-April, at $6.95 per bushel, are up 87 cents from March and $3.69 above last April. Farmers received an average of $11.70 per cwt. for grain sorghum in mid-April, up 90 cents from March and $6.42 above last April. Soybean prices, at $12.80 per bushel in mid-April,

The Kansas Department of Agriculture released the Kansas Crop Progress and Condition Report. Dry conditions continued in Kansas with high winds and still a lack of moisture in many sections of the state. The dry and windy conditions have caused burn bans to be issued in some counties. A fire in Haskell County Kansas earlier this week caused a small rural town to be evacuated. Some rain hit Eastern parts of the state but it was short lived and came with hail and strong winds. The winter wheat is 22% jointed and winterkill has been 15% or less. Corn planting is just starting

The Farmland Price index is a monthly index value done by Creighton University and it is number from 0 to 100 and is based up surveys of rural banks in agriculture areas including Kansas. The states in the Farmland Price Index include Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming. The overall reading is now 75 which is down from 75.9 in February. A number greater than 50 is indication that land prices are going up. The seminar put on by the FDIC in streaming video webinar format this morning titled Don't Bet the Farm - Assesing the Boom in Farmland Prices was very interesting with a panel of speakers in various fields such as banking, agricultural professors and economists. The Kansas Farm Report has some interesting farm facts regarding farmland and cropland in Kansas. In 2009 there were: 28,216,064 acres of cropland, 46,200,000 acres of land in farms and 2,762,748 acres of irrigated land. In 2009 the total fertilizer sold in Kansas was 1,902,649 tons. The annual average precipitation for Kansas for 2009 was 32.32 inches of water. The average temperature in Kansas for 2009 was 53.2 degrees fahrenheit. The total acres harvested in Kansas was 21,875,800 acres (total of all crops). The number of livestock farms in operation in 2007 in Kansas were 30,000 and 200 feedlots and 95 slaughter

In a recent newsletter from the Kansas Horse Council they encourage people to help bring back horse and greyhound racing in Kansas. Horse racing is an agricultural based business and with nearly all of Kansas being a rural state the economic benefits of horse racing is certainly worth looking at again. The governor has expressed interest in examining bringing racing back to Kansas. The Kansas legislature is preparing to re-evaluate it as well according to the Kansas Horse Council. Report from United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Agricultural Statistics Service, Kansas Field Office, Kansas Department of Agriculture The All Crops Index in February, at 267 percent of the 1990-92 base, is up 28 points from January and up 113 points from 2010. Wheat : prices in mid-February, at $8.50 per bushel, are up $1.41 from January and $4.18 above last February. Corn: prices in mid-February, at $6.10 per bushel, are up 71 cents from January and $2.71 above last February.
