hunting: Bobwhite Quail Initiative in Kansas - 05/14/12 02:54 PM
Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism has a new initative that will help with decling bobwhite quail populations in Kansas.
Certain areas are designated including parts of Lyon, Wabaunsee, Coffey and Osage counties around areas like the Melvern Wildlife Area and the Lyone State Fishing Lake and Wildlife Area. Another area includes Labette and Neosho counties and also the Grand Osage Wildlife Area (formerly the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant in Johnson County Kansas).
The program helps landowners with enrollment cost-shares and assistance with the program. For more information go to

I am sure everyone has heard over and over the saying location, location, location when it comes to real estate. That may hold especially true for residential and commercial markets but I think it less important for the land market particularly the rural, farmland, and hunting land sectors. Do you have an Absentee Rural Land Owner Sign on your Property? Now I would guess the answer to that is a resounding NO. As it should be… because there is no need to announce to the world that you don’t live anywhere near your land. However, consider that your property may be doing all the talking of that sign anyway.
Absentee Rural Land Ownership is fairly common and many people own land that is fairly far away from their primary residence. It may be difficult for you to monitor the property effectively from a distance so how can you protect your investment?

Kansas is about 80,000 square miles and nearly 97% of that land is privately owned. That makes finding places to hunt in Kansas somewhat difficult at times unless you own your own private hunting lands. However, there is a Kansas program that helps Kansas landowners offer their land for public hunting and recreation.
The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) has a program called the Walk-In Hunting Access (WIHA) program that has about 2,220 agreements to provide almost one million acres of hunting land access statewide. From the Kansas Department of Parks and Wildlife it is announced that Kansas will benefit from a grant of $800,000 from PLJV Conoco-Phillips as they support wildlife efforts in Oklahoma, Colorado and Kansas. The two area projects in Kansas that will receive funding are as follows (information from the KDPW)

The CRP sign-up ended August 27, 2010 and the results at the USDA website show that 50,094 total CRP acceptable offers as of Sept. 10, 2010. For Kansas there was 7,526 offers which was 618,905 total acres with a rent of 38.92 and total acceptance rate at 98% which was one of the highest as the national average was about 91% on acceptance rate.
The USDA Farm Service Agency released the press release today stating that they added 30,000 acres that will protect the Lesser Prairie Chicken in Kansas. However, this acreage was added in a separate program. The acreage has been added … (0 comments)

Driving down the road you see a Land for Sale sign. You stop, pull in, look at the sign and then since there is no gate you just pull on in off the road. You get out of your vehicle, start looking around and the next thing you know you are halfway across the section enjoying the day and checking out the views. Sounds innocent enough right?
