The Washington post headline Ceres Partners reaps profits from farmland is just many news posts lately expanding on how many investment houses, hedge funds and internationally known famous investors such as Soros, Buffet, and Rogers are doing and that is investing in farmland.

The seminar put on by the FDIC in streaming video webinar format this morning titled Don't Bet the Farm - Assesing the Boom in Farmland Prices was very interesting with a panel of speakers in various fields such as banking, agricultural professors and economists. The one group that was blatantly not represented was the actual farmer or agricultural producer which was odd. It seemed that a representative from farming should have been there to give input on such an important topic.

When it comes to real estate investing even though new books and gurus preach about new techniques all the time; truly the basics of real estate investments have not changed. Land never changes. What is on top of the land may change but the dirt is always there. Its article of corporations will not dissolve overnight and disappear. Land will always be there and the amount we have now on earth will stay relatively the same in our lifetimes.

There are many articles about land vs. stocks and what is better. Maybe instead of comparing them why not take a look at just adding land to your investment portfolio. With that in mind it is easier to do your own research.
Land is easier to find information because most of the due diligence you need to do can be done using public tax records. The Progressive Farmer recently reported Kansas number 3 on its list of the best places to own farmland. The Central Plains were very well represented with Nebraska hitting number one. The article also pointed out that Kansas land at $1050 an acre is a bargain. The article also profiled Haskell County Kansas where beef feedlots and even cotton are viable crops for farmers. One of the more interesting quotes from the article talked about the high prices of some farmland in the last few years and how that might not always be viable due to profitability.
