One of the joys of life on Maui is our charming historical towns--from the oceanfront town of Lahaina to the Upcountry town of Makawao, where I grew up. One of my favorite things to do on a day off is to stroll down Baldwin Avenue and soak up the cool Upcountry air (and stop by Komoda’s bakery for their famous cream puffs, my childhood favorite).Each Friday, Maui hosts a town party in one four historic towns. Yesterday, I had the pleasure of attending a luncheon in support of Women Helping Women at the home of one of Maui's most in demand interior designers, Renee Ward of Reflecting You Interiors. Both Consuelo's Catering and Maui Prime Fine Foods donated time and energy to the luncheon.
For ten years, the Hui Aloha Luncheon Group has met monthly to raise awareness about various community programs and volunteer opportunities. This month, the focus was on Women Helping Women, which is Maui's only safe shelter for victims of domestic violence. The shelter is in need of $189,000 to keep the doors open.

I was thrilled when Peter Merriman opened Monkeypod Kitchen in the Wailea Gateway Shops Merriman’s here in Kapalua is one of my favorite places to watch sunset in Kapalua, and this newest venture is reminds me of one of my favorite lunch/dinner spots on the Big Island, Merriman’s Market Cafe in Waikaloa. It has been announced that Hyundai will be the new title sponsor for the PGA Tour season opening Tournament of Championships. The auto manufacturer takes over from Seoul Broadcasting Systems (SBS), which sponsored the tournament last year. As many golf fans may recall, the title sponsor from 1999-2009 was Mercedes-Benz.
The Hyundai Tournament of Champions is hosted by the Mark and Debi Rolfing Charitable Foundation. Mark and Debi are long time Kapalua Residents, dedicated foster parents, and supporters of many children’s charities, both local and nationwide. My friend Stuart, a local police officer, told me about his daughter, Kaylee, who had started her own Retirement Stables here on Maui. She came to him with an idea: she wanted to provide a safe place for animals that might otherwise face an uncertain future.
With her father's support and encouragement, Kaylee has taken in dozens of animals--horses, sheep, pigs, goats, and chickens. In fact, employees of one of the local farms chipped in to purchase a goat that was going to be sold, so that … (2 comments)

Having grown up on Maui, I sometimes have to remind myself of the beauty of the island-it can be easy to take what you see every day for granted. One thing, however, that never fails to amaze me, is the annual return of the Humpback whales. Sitting at my desk at the Plantation Clubhouse today, I have a view of the water, and can watch them breaching. Yesterday, at the Beach Club, we saw whales and spinner dolphins leaping out of the water together.
