Painting the town teal...for Ovarian Cancer Awareness.
That's right - our teal is showing in downtown Aiken. 
September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness month - and we want everyone to be aware. Our women need our support in every way. These are mothers, daughters, sisters, grandmothers, nieces, granddaughters, cousins, aunts, neighbors and friends... who are battling ovarian cancer - not to mention all the other people (men, women & children) in the world battling other forms of the terrible disease.

aiken sc: The way a finals match should be!! - 05/16/12 06:29 PM
I had the pleasure of attending the Smoak Family Polo Tournament Finals match on Sunday - and what a match, wow!!  This was one of the best 8-goal matches I have ever seen.  Lots of defense, offense, skill, speed...   After the 6th chukker it was a tie game, so it went into sudden-death overtime.  It was non-stop action, both teams proved they deserved to be in the finals!  You don't see this kind of scoring usually in an 8-goal tourny. I have the list on my desk.... will post tomorrow.  I love going out in the field and picking the berries, we used to do it all the time in my hometown in New Jersey -- and it was a classmate whose family owned the farm.  I love small town life, and even though Aiken is a small CITY...it still feels like HOME to me :)

Aiken is a great little city - but every once in awhile we all need to 'get away'! 
My place to go has always been the shore.  Down here they call it 'the beach' :)
 
My favorite beach (since moving here) in SC is definitely Hilton Head Island. Just a little more than a 2 hour drive and you are at the coast - with your toes in the sand :)

 Meet my nephew Jay, and his bowling teammates!   6 years old and he is well on his way to pro status!  
           The Three Musketeers.     When asked how they came up with their team name, Jay had this to say "Someone just wrote it on the paper, probably mommy.  Me and Jacob liked it, but Austin didn't."

If you are looking for a dog - please consider adopting a rescue dog.    Look for a place in your county.
Danny & Ron run a rescue, and recently adopted out their 1000th dog :)    MOST OF THESE DOGS (800)  WERE RESCUED FROM HURRICANE KATRINA.
Their operation is TOTALLY NON-PROFIT - they just don't want to see any more dogs be put down. 
They go and rescue these pups from the mills and just want to find good homes for them. 
They take them home and care for them until a 'forever family' is found :)

The frozen casserole sale was a complete success and completely sold out in the first hour!    Silly me - I headed straight for the chocolate...and by the time I got to the casseroles they were all gone  : (

Did you know that Aiken SC is a City of Character?   (and some charactors too, lol) j/k.

Anyway - back in 1999 a resolution was passed by the Aiken City Council to support a 'Community of Charactor' initiative in Aiken - THE FIRST IN SOUTH CAROLINA!!   We really are trend setters here in this little horse town :)

Did you get a chance to come on out for the 'Ford Trucks Equestrian Balloon Festival'?  It was alot of fun.   This was the first time I have seen hot air balloons up close and in person - they are absolutely beautiful :)      Saturday night there was a balloon glow - it was so cool.  I hope you were able to come out to see it.    Sunday morning the gates opened one last time for a mass ascension of the balloons - filling the skies over Aiken with a beautiful sight -/

Do you know?  I know!!  I know!!  This is a great little piece of trivia for EVERYONE!!  There are alot of sports in the world using very large playing fields.  
A baseball field is pretty big.   
 What about  Soccer -Field Hockey -  Rugby???   What about Lacrosse?............  (A Lacrosse field is 110' long by 60' wide)
By now you are thinking - come on, Kara - we know it is a football field!  Is that what you are thinking??  That it must be a football field?  Well, a football field is 360' long by 160' wide.
