School Preparations for the arrival of the Army 7th Special Forces Group are under way in Okaloosa County, in Fort Walton Beach, Niceville and Crestview. They have included training for the school district's staff, a Web site page for incoming parents and trips to Fort Bragg, to speak to families who will move to the Emerald Coast.

If you have had the wonderful experience of waiting for a month for a dental appointment at Eglin AFB, it seems your prayers are being answered. It's true, construction has already begun on a new clinic that will help support the base's growing and projected population and expanded mission of the 7th SFG and F35's have fueled the fire for the urgency for the facility, and hopefully it will reduce patient wait times. The projected completion date for the new clinic is expected sometime around fall next year.

If you are a military officer and have considered entering the legal field of the military there is a program available to assist you with that. It's called the Legal Studies Program. Applications for the Funded Legal Education Program and Excess Leave Program are being accepted from 1 January through 1 March 2010. Interested officers are encouraged to compete. The FLEP is a paid legal studies program for active-duty Air Force commissioned officers. The FLEP is an assignment action, and participants receive full pay, allowances, and tuition. Military Pay Update: President Obama signed the 2010 National Defense Authorization Act which includes a 3.4 % pay increase for all military members. This raise is actually only .5 percent lower than the 2009 military pay increase. However, considering current economic conditions this may prove to be a generous increase. While it's not a huge pay increase, it is nonetheless an increase, and in military life every little bit helps. Althought nothing can replace family being separated by deployments, it's sort of like after the doctor sticks you with that needle, then gives you that sucker to make it better. EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. will be conducting a "Test Mission" on Tuesday morning September 1st 2009.
The closure is scheduled to occur between 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m-noon, and should last no longer than 60 minutes. The areas that will be affected will be Highways 85, 123 and 285 through the Eglin Range will be closed, so mark your calendars for the dates and times, and drivers should plan works schedules accordingly if you will be coming from Crestview, DeFuniak or Niceville .

So just in case you didn't know that the Okaloosa airport located in ValParaiso is now named the Northwest Florida Regional Airport. What's going on? Eglin Air Force Base officials plan a series of town hall meetings to give members of surrounding communities an update on the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program and other projects under way at the base.
