homesteading: Homesteading Part 3: Harnessing the Sun and the Wind - 03/15/09 07:14 PM
If you've read my previous blog posts, you already know that I live and work off the grid in an earthship that my husband and I built ourselves.  We have also conquered the challenges of gardening in our very rocky ground. (See: Homesteading Part 1: Less is More and Homesteading Part 2: High Desert Gardening )  This post will address that "off the grid" part of homesteading.
Living off the grid has been a very liberating experience for us.  While my husband and I have lived off the grid for the past five years, neither of us consider ourselves experts in … (3 comments)

homesteading: Never judge a book by it's cover... or it's house! - 03/15/09 12:46 PM
Funny how you can get a perception of someone by what you hear or read about them.
Two years ago in February, my oldest daughter, Andrea, got married to a wonderful young man, Greg.  We had a combined family Thanksgiving in November before the wedding to meet the in-laws and other family members.

During the wedding shower, Patty (son-in-law's mom) said to me, "You know, you're not at all what I expected!".  Apparently, Andrea and Greg had told them all about where we live and the house we built (see the Homesteading Blog Posts), and the garden, etc.  She fully … (6 comments)

homesteading: Solutions, not problems! - 03/10/09 07:10 PM
During our first Great Depression, many families, and middle-aged or retired people took on boarders to help pay their expenses.  That time may again be upon us.  In fact, a recent article described the trend of Boomers aged 50 and up, using home-share organizations for just such purpose.  Unlike their parents and grandparents, most Boomers did not "save" for retirement, but rather, they invested for it, and with the world markets (including housing) going bust, much of their retirement funds have been lost.

From Chicago, to Atlanta, and Vermont, there has been a dramatic increase in Boomers seeking roommates and … (7 comments)

homesteading: Homesteading Part 2: High Desert Gardening - 02/28/09 08:04 PM
Our food supply has been corrupted.    It seems that every few weeks there is yet another report of e-coli in our beef, salmonella in our peanut butter, or melamine in baby formula.  Did you know that almost all corn, rice, and wheat grown in this country has been genetically modified (GMO)?  So have many of our fruits and vegetables.  Most European countries have banned GMO foods and yet our cows, chickens, and pigs are fed these GMO grains (and so are we!).  High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) is in just about everything.  Despite the television commercials doing their best to convince … (6 comments)

homesteading: Homesteading Part 1: Less is More - 02/23/09 03:08 PM
How do you keep your head above water in today's economy?  Unless you're a self-made millionaire (I'm not!), it's certainly not easy.  Years ago my husband and I decided on a pretty significant lifestyle change.  If we were really going to change, we had to reassess our needs and wants.  We wanted to live more simply and be as self-sustaining as possible.  We did not want to get up and head out to corporate America every morning. We did not want a mortgage or car payment.  We wanted 40+ acres to call our own.  Our basic needs were simple: a roof over … (7 comments)
