Of course it does.  This morning the alarm went off at 4:45 (We rise early and start our day at the gym). 
I turned on the local news - school closings were scrolling across the bottom of the screen.  It hadn't even started to snow yet.  Our part of the National Capital Area was forecast to receive 1 to 2 inches.  As you can see by the picture of our deck this could hardly be called a record snowfall.
Arthur and I have lived in northern tier states where they only close school if they can't find the school bus.

Unbelievable as it may seem this property was lived in until about five years ago.  It is actually an historic landmark in Lorton, but is beyond repair.
Fixer Uppers or Handyman Specials come in several different configurations.

Where and why is this happening? 
 Where it's happening an easy question to answer - in the close-in older sections of Alexandria, Arlington, Falls Church and Fairfax County.
The "why" is also easy to answer.  The increasingly congested Northern Virginia highways and fuel costs have encouraged some builders to purchase a small, older home in a close-in location, demolish it and build a  much larger home than the existing homes in the neighborhood.

If you've never seen an 18th century grist mill in operation,  the reconstructed George Washington Grist Mill is a fascinating place.
Washington's first ownership of a grist mill occurred when he inherited Mount Vernon from the widow of his half-brother, Lawrence. Its' primary purpose was to provide wheat and corm meal for area farmers and the Mount Vernon Estate.
In 1771, Washington had a new "merchant mill" built and began commercial milling operations selling flour and corn meal up and down the East Coast and as far away as Portugal.  The mill was razed in 1850 and was bebuilt by the Commonwealth in 1933 … (4 comments)

There was no place in colonial America as grand as Woodlawn.  The Lewises of Woodlawn entertained lavishly.
Before his death in 1799, George Washington deeded 2,000 acres of the Mount Vernon estate to Major Lawrence and Eleanor "Nelly" Custis Lewis. Lawrence was the President's nephew and "Nelly" was Martha Washington's grandaughter.
Dr. William Thornton, first architect of the U.S. Capitiol designed the mansion where the family displayed a collection of objects in honor of their illustrious ancestors.  Woodlawn is open for tours and is an extremely popular site for private events.  It is convenient to Washington's Grist Mill and Mount Vernon Estate.

We were interviewed by several firms who were unwilling to have us join their organization, because "real estate agents are individualists who work most effectively by themselves".  Also, they felt there would be "too much emotional pressure on a married couple's relationship".  Eventually, we joined a firm that was willing to "take a chance" and accept us. In 1974 we relocated to Virginia from Massachusettes.  After a very thorough tour of Fairfax County we decided Mount Vernon was the place that suited our needs.
My husband's office was in Crystal City and the trip in on the George Washington Parkway was a pleasure.  Additionally, it was convenient to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport when he had to travel.

This is the fourth in my series about family owned and operated hardware stores in Northern Virginia.
My first association with Fischer's was in the early '80s.  Our family enjoyed camping and we were constantly on the lookout for items that would make our stay in the woods a bit more enjoyable.  Fischer's was the only place we could find Strike Anywhere Matches.  Since then I have looked to them for antiquing finishes - they have an exceptionally fine inventory of refinishing supplies.

In FAIRFAX COUNTY the minimum lot size required to keep livestock on residential property is two acres.  Article 2, Section 2-512 of the county Zoning Ordinance details the number and types of animals allowed.  However, I recommend you contact FAIRFAX COUNTY and confirm the requirements as they may have changed without the county website being updated.
Regardless of lot size regulations some subdivisions do not allow livestock.  The good news is there are areas in Fairfax County where subdivisions were developed with horse ownership in mind.  They will normally be found in Clifton, Fairfax Station, Great Falls, Lorton and McLean.

If you are married, your first concern is, "Where are we going to live?"  Fortunately, there are numerous, viable options available to you.  Additionally, if you purchase a home in Prince William County you will be within 15 to 30 minutes of Quantico without sitting in traffic.
The following links to communities close to Quantico provide representative home photos and prices as of November, 2007.
