Of all the programs that Franklin Delano Roosevelt implemented shortly after he assumed the presidency in 1933 the two that left a great physical legacy were the Works Progress Adminiatration (WPA) and the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). Both agencies had the goal of putting a large number of unemployed to work on community infrastructure projects. The CCC recruited young men 17 to 25 years of age.

Considering how cold it has been in Northern Virginia this winter I was afraid the Spring bulbs had left town. This small group of daffodil volunteers inhabit the heavily wooded common ground behind our Lake Ridge home. Of course, each year they do their "daffodil thing" and the group expands a little bit. They are our first indicator each year that winter is going to end as we know it will. However, it is nice to receive the confirmation. The green is a very welcome sight

As you can see by the map at the right Prince William County is not the closest community to the Pentagon and Washington, DC. When people relocate to Northern Virginia there are four items most of them consider when they make a decision as to where they will live. They are commuting, schools, shopping and recreation.

Yesterday I visited Camelot Elementary School in Annandale VA to read a story (selected by the teachers) to hearing impaired children. Camelot is one of several elementary Fairfax County Public Schools that has specially equipped classrooms for assisting the hearing impaired with their early learning skills.I wear a microphone and my voice is transmitted by way of an electronic wireless loop in the room. Last Spring I was taking photos of the Occoquan and Belmont Bay areas and decided to drive into the Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge. I came upon an Osprey's nest (not that unusual along the shoreline of the Occoquan and Potomac Rivers), but this one was different. There was a chick in the nest which can be seen just peeking out from under the female. Although the parents were quiet, they kept a watchful eye on me. The photo I used for the 20th century is an exaggeration - that home was not at all well maintained. However, I really question if any of the homes or offices built over the last 50 years will stand the test of centuries.
