I drove by the home above (there is one farther back) a few months ago and it jogged my memory about a situation I encountered last year. I was showing homes to a first time buyer couple. They told me they preferred homes where there was no homeowner's association.  Since they were moving from a small apartment and would be spending money to furnish their new home they preferred not having the additional expense of HOA fees.

This 1881 schoolhouse on Beulah Street in the Franconia section of Fairfax County speaks loudly of the determination of the recently freed slaves to see to it that their children were educated. At the time I took this photo there was open land behind the schoolhouse. Today, the area is one huge high rise commercial district, but the little schoolhouse stands proudly knowing it has legal safeguards in place that make its' little plot of land unavailable for development.

Bethel Church has been at the same intersection (Smoketown and Minnieville) since it was built in 1850. Originally, it sat across from the Sunoco service station in what would have been the middle of Smoketown Road.
