Arthur and I were on a hiking trip about 10 years ago in the Blue Ridge Mountains of southwestern Virginia. It was the last time he was able to do any "industrial strength" hiking - the pictures we took on that trip became very special. Major foot and ankle problems won't let him walk more than 1/4 mile without stopping to sit and rest. This is the flag that was used by Joe Rosenthal in the famous photo that eventually became the inspiration for the Iwo Jima Memorial in Arlington, Virginia.
The smaller flag used for the original photo taken about 20 minutes earlier by a USMC photographer is also displayed with the one above on a rotating basis.
There were 25,851 Marine and Navy casualties during the 36 day campaign - 6,825 of whom were killed.

The church above was built in 1847 by Episcopalians and named Saint James. At some point in time they used it as the Prince William Academy. It was next acquired by the Church of the Brethren.
During the Civil War it was used by both Confederate and Union troops as a barracks and hospital. By the end of the war the interior of the church was in ruins, but the solid stone exterior was intact.

An 1893 Courthouse With A Second Career - 02/02/12 03:55 PM
After the decision was made to move the Prince William County seat of government to Manassas the fifth Prince William courthouse was built in 1893 to replace the old Brentsville Courthouse and served until 1984 when the current courthouse was built two blocks away
Recently, the old courthouse went through a major renovation and can now be rented for meetings and receptions.
In 1911 the courthouse was the site of a jubilee marking the 50th anniversary of the First Battle of Manassas . The commemorative plaque and cannons are in plain view at the corner of Grant and Lee.

The "Church" Was There Before The "State" - 02/01/12 10:43 AM

Until 1958 the building above was the home of the Occoquan Methodist Episcopal Church. They merged with a congregation in Woodbridge and moved out of town. It became the Occoquan (pop. 800) VA Town Hall in1963. Note the old church bulletin board alongside the front door
