Americana #10 - A War Didn't Stop This 1822 Bridge - Still Working - 08/25/12 01:42 PM
This 1822 railroad bridge in Nokesville spans what is now the Norfolk and Southern Railway tracks. During the Civil War era it was the Orange and Alexandria Railroad and was coveted by both the Confederate and Union forces. The two battles at Manassas and the later one at Bristoe Station were waged with the Aden Road bridge in the middle of it all. When the 1863 Bristoe Station battle was over the victorious Union forces had to rebuild the railroad, but I am unaware if that included repairs to the bridge. They were bred to race on long, smooth racetracks and not able to adapt to the short, rough colonial tracks. Judith Carter Henry c1776 - July 21,1861 Mrs. Henry was born in Manassas, Virginia one mile from where she died at the age of 85. Since she was born in 1776 the war for American independence was fought during her childhood.
