active rain: The Same Newspaper Called About My Blogs Twice This Year - 02/18/11 09:45 AM

Twice already this year I've been interviewed on the phone by reporters from the Washington Times as a direct result of my Activerain posts about Prince William County real estate. In both instances the reporter mentioned that my Lake Ridge and Old Bridge Estates blogs triggered the call.
Reports continue to surface about the large number of short sales and foreclosures in Prince William County when compared to the rest of the National Capital Area. They call REALTORS® to solicit our opinions about the current trend of sales.
Although this is fairly standard procedure for the Washington Times I am obviously pleased … (34 comments)

active rain: Taking Marketing Pictures On A Stormy Day - Not A Problem For Me - 10/06/10 06:11 AM
Since we don't live in a perpetually blue sky world I take pictures when it is necessary, rain, shine or just plain gloomy. I can't always reschedule my time so I just take pictures and plan on editing. The picture below is about as drab as a picture can get.
Adding a blue sky would be unrealistic and would clash with dark town homes - I added a stormy sky to make the picture more interesting, yet appropriately colored. I did absolutely nothing to any colors or features of the original picture.
Finally, since I planned to use the … (26 comments)

active rain: How Do You Select A Post To Re-Blog? - 09/23/10 02:36 PM

Ever since post re-blogging was allowed there have been many posts on the subject of RE-BLOG practicesSome of them have comments against points being awarded for a RE-BLOG insisting many people do it for points onlyOthers comment it is an opportunity to give recognition for a post well doneAnother group of comments support re-blogging as a way to make members aware of meaningful posts that may have been overlooked as a featured postOthers recommend re-blogging older posts that are still relevantI have no disagreement with any of the premises above, but I have decided on a slightly different tack.
The main … (10 comments)

active rain: Do You Blog About The History Of Your Area? You Should - 09/01/10 01:58 PM
I write many posts about the history around us in Northern Virginia. The most common comment we receive is "There is so much history in your area". Of course, the eastern part of the US did play a significant role in our country's development, but every one of the 50 states and its' communities have items of historical significance that would suggest posts that are both educational and entertaining.
For example, a four lane cross county highway replaced an old two lane road several years ago. I traveled two lane Davis Ford Rd for years when it was the main cross county … (18 comments)

active rain: Have You Considered A Monopod To Improve Videos and Photos? - 08/27/10 08:43 AM

A monopod can be purchased at Target for $14.99. It has three adjustable sections that extend its height to 69". Its' collapsed length is only 22.5". Of course the camera is threaded on top of the grip. There is a rubber floor protector at the bottom which can be screwed upward revealing a spike when you want stability on the ground. The most important benefit of a monopod is that you don't need lots of room in a crowd to set up a tripodWe've all been to parades, sporting events, concerts, etc and had to hold the camera with two hands above … (7 comments)

active rain: How To Make Text In A Blog Become A Link To Another Website - 08/03/10 06:56 AM

That's a question I was asked by an AR newbie in the comment section of a post on an entirely different subject. Like many of you I write "how to" posts as a way of giving back to the AR community. It also sharpens the skills I use when responding to a client's question. Finally, since I contact the person directly, it's another opportunity to establish a relationship with an out-of-town REALTOR®
CHANGING A NAME OR WORD INTO A BLOG LINK
There is a tool bar at the top of the blog WYSIWYG text box. Just to the right of center … (116 comments)

active rain: When You have A Name Like "Kruschka" It's Very Easy To------------------------ - 07/31/10 12:22 PM
Understand the importance of pronouncing a person's name correctly. For years I was associated with a firm where one of the owners regularly refered to me as Karen KRESKA. No matter how many times I corrected this person I was still Karen KRESKA - a complete lack of sensivity to my feelings. I wasn't the only agent subjected to the problem.
Whenever I receive a "Contact Me" message from someone with a multisyllabic name the first thing I ask when I call them is how to pronounce their name. The number of people in our country with odd names like Kruschka are … (26 comments)

active rain: Let The 70th Year Begin - 07/19/10 09:58 AM

Let's be clear about this, I am not talking about my 70th birthday!!!
However, Arthur and I are each beginning our 35th year as REALTORS®. Since we work as a team it only seemed logical to me to add them together.
I am not going to bore you with a litany of all the changes and fluctuations we've seen over that time span, but I will tell you that---------------------
The hills of Northern Virginia are littered with the bones of REALTORS® who were unwilling to adapt to new challenges.
Little did we know when we launched our first web site in 1997 … (6 comments)
