fairfax county things to do: See Mount Vernon as an 18th Century Visitor Saw It - 10/17/10 08:45 AM
George and Martha Washington's estate at Mount Vernon is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the National Capital Area. It is located at the southern end of the Mount Vernon Memorial Parkway about 10 miles south of Alexandria. Although the tourist entrance is located there the original entrance is not. If you continue straight and turn left at the first traffic light you will soon see a gate on your left. It is the original entrance to the estate and is the first view had by an 18th century guest as they approached the Washington's home. < There is space to (10 comments)

It is only a stone's throw from the hustle and bustle of the Fairfax County Parkway. RESTORED It was purchased in 1950 by the Upper Pohick Community League - its' members restored it to its' original condition and continue to maintain it.

Very few people are aware of the fact there is close-in cabin camping in Northern Virginia. Pohick Bay Regional Park has excellent facilities. The cabins have electricity, air conditioning, heat and two rooms. As can be seen in the photo below the room at the back of the cabin has a double bed and a set of bunk beds. The front room has a futon, table, two chairs and a microwave. Outside is a front porch with a swing, outside grill, fire pit and a picnic table. Although there is no bathroom in the cabins, a bathhouse is (9 comments)

The information in quotes below was taken directly from the Hidden Pond Nature Center website where you can find more specific nformation regarding programs that are offered at the nature center. The important point of this post is that there is now a 2,000 foot trail that links the 25 acres of the Hidden Park Nature Center to Pohick Stream Valley Park - a meandering 7,000 acre park. It is just one more reason to consider making Springfield your home. ""Acres of undisturbed woodland, quiet trails, splashing streams and a tranquil pond are just a few of the reasons (5 comments)

Land holdings of George Mason IV came as far north as what is now known as Hybla Valley and Huntley Meadows Park. Thomson Mason, a grandson of George Mason, built a home on the property in 1825. The house, now known as Historic Huntley, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Virginia Landmarks Register, and the Fairfax County Historic House Inventory. Mason family ownership of the land lasted into the early part of the 20th century. Individual sections of the land were sold for family farms. Originally, Fort Hunt (Sheridan's Point in Washington's Day) served as a fort to defend the settlers against Indians in the 17th century. Nowadays Fort Hunt Park on a summer plays host to several hundred picnickers. On Sunday evenings there are free concerts. There are large and medium size shelters that can be reserved for private functions That is a far cry from its' original and subsequent purposes. For eight years our family lived within walking distance of the Mount Vernon Estate. As we walked along Old Mount Vernon Road we passed the gate that provided an unobstructed view of the mansion identical to the one on the left. It was also a short bicycle ride to the George Washington Parkway and a relaxing trip along the Potomac River into Olde Towne - we tried to visualize George Washington making the same trip on horseback There have been some changes since we moved out of Mount Vernon in 1982, but they have not been dramatic since the area was fairly well developed when we (8 comments)

Greorge Mason IV (1725-1792) authored the Virginia Declaration of Rights, It was eventually incorporated into the Virginia Constitution as Article 1. Why is this of interest?
