Churches had written "laws" and a governing body that provided much of the basis for civil law and sense of community in daily life.  That structure played an important part in the development of rural America throughout the 19th century.
Prince William County was just such a rural commuity until the end of World War II and had an abundance of them.  Fortunately, eight have survived and are … (13 comments)

The story of Greenwich Presbyterian in Nokesville began with the birth of Aminta Elizabeth Douglass who was born April 1, 1777 in Maryland.

historic churches of prince william county: Bethel - The Little Church That Survived The Civil War - 01/01/12 10:37 PM

Bethel Church has been at the same intersection (Smoketown and Minnieville) since it was built in 1850. Originally, it sat across from the Sunoco service station in what would have been the middle of Smoketown Road. In 1977 the Bethel Historical Society had the building moved to its present site on the grounds of Bethel United Methodist Church. The society oversees and maintains the building.
Land for the church was donated by Mr. and Mrs. Burr Glasscock - he was a member of the Prince William County Board of Supervisors. Building materials were gathered by neighbors.
The two major Civil War … (22 comments)

There is a rope from the belfry to the sanctuary near the front door. The bell was rung to signal worship and other events. It is said the original bell was removed for use elsewhere by Presbyterians - I didn't know "my people" would do that sort of thing :)

A Mighty Church Grew

According to the Ebnezer Baptist Church website it was the first African American church in this part of Northern Virginia. Located in the Town of Occoquan, land for the church was purchased in 1881, only seven years after the town itself was incorporated. The first cornerstone was laid on the first Sunday of May 1883
The congregation was founded by Reverend Lewis Henry Bailey, a former slave and member of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Alexandria VA.
Since the original site could not support a needed expansion, a large tract of land at Minnieville and Telegraph Roads was … (7 comments)

historic churches of prince william county: Asbury Methodist Episcopal Church South Built 1894 In Nokesville - 12/28/11 10:03 PM
Asbury Methodist Episcopal South in Nokesville is one of the many historic churches in Prince William County. There is very little documentation available except that seen on the marker that stands in front of the church. Photographing and researching these churches has given me the opportunity to better understand the early residents of Prince William County.

The church, 1822 courthouse, 1822 jail and 1922 one room schoolhouse are now owned and maintained by Prince William County.Architectural lines in rural America during the 18th and 19th century were clean, symmetrical and functional. Their simplicity was the source of their beauty. There are probably thousands of them standing and serving throughout the country today.

Even the decorative features of the windows and doors were understated.
