mount vernon: An 18th Century View Of Washington's Mount Vernon - 11/02/09 08:50 AM

Contrary to common belief the clip art view of Mount Vernon at the right is not the front entry - it is the "back porch" that overlooks the Potomac River.
Guests to the estate did not normally arrive by boat or barge, but rather by horse or horse drawn carriage.
Arthur and I lived about one minute from the mansion for about six years.  We drove, biked or walked past the 18th century entrance at least twice a day.  It is very prominent along Old Mount Vernon Road
The photo below was taken by Arthur between the entry … (9 comments)

mount vernon: The Washingtons May Have Invited Us To Tea - 06/01/09 04:39 PM

For eight years our family lived within walking distance of the Mount Vernon Estate.  As we walked along Old Mount Vernon Road we passed the gate that provided an unobstructed view of the mansion identical to the one above.  It was also a short bicycle ride to the George Washington Parkway and a relaxing trip along the Potomac River into Olde Towne - we tried to visualize George Washington making the same trip on horseback
There have been some changes since we moved out of Mount Vernon in 1982, but they have not been dramatic since the area was fairly well developed when we bought our home … (0 comments)

mount vernon: GEORGE WASHINGTON AIR JUNCTION - A GIGANTIC FLOP - 02/23/08 04:25 PM

Henry Woodhouse purchased 1,500 acres of dairyland in Hybla Valley during the 1920's.
It was his objective to build the largest transatlantic commercial airport in the National Capital Area.  There were three runways with the largest being 7.200 feet long as well as moorings for Zeppelins.

Howver, the airport never received the necessary approvals - there is no record of any takeoffs or landings during its' operation.

The land was leased to dairy farmers until 1950 when the Virginia National Guard established an anti-aircraft battery in defense of Washington, D.C. on the site … (8 comments)

mount vernon: BEACON FIELD AIRPORT IS NOW BEACON MALL SHOPPING CENTER - 02/19/08 05:55 PM

In all the years we lived in Mount Vernon and shopped at Beacon Mall I wondered where the name originated.
The original 74 acre tract was purchased by an Alexandria businessman in the 18th century.  It changed hands over time and became the site of City View, an impressive 19th century estate.
The site (elevation 249 feet) was an ideal location for an airfield which was developed in the 1920's.  Originally, it was used by private pilots and the US Mail Service.
During Woeld War II it saw service as a training school for naval aviation cadets as well as the Womens Air Force … (2 comments)

mount vernon: FULL SERVICE GAS STATION THRIVES IN MOUNT VERNON VA - 02/11/08 07:19 PM

There is only one gas station in the Fort Hunt section of Mount Vernon.  It is located in the Hollin Hall Shopping Center .
Yes, they pump your gas, wash the windows and check the oil and fluid levels.  Even though they are the only gas station in the Fort Hunt area their price per gallon of gasoline is competitive with others in the Mount Vernon area.
Why?  The shopping center and service station are at the main entrance to Hollin Hall Village, a community of one level ramblers that is very popular with senior citizens.
Also, at the time Hollin … (6 comments)

mount vernon: Back To The Future at the Hollin Hall Shopping Center in Mount Vernon VA - 02/11/08 05:30 PM

The Hollin Hall Shopping Center located on Fort Hunt Road has survived handsomely since it was built in conjunction with Hollin Hall Village in the late 1940's and early 1950's.

The facade of the Safeway at the north end of the complex is typical of the architectural design of that period.
Although the Fort Hunt area of Mount Vernon is not an incorporated town, the Hollin Hall Shopping Center is about as close to a "downtown" as you can get.  It is two blocks long and has all of the neighborhood necessities - most of them have been there for years.

mount vernon: HOLLIN HALL VILLAGE Alexandria Mount Vernon Fairfax County VA Real Estate - 01/16/08 09:58 AM

Hollin Hall Village is just that - a village of 580 homes off Fort Hunt Road.  Although the homes are 50+ years old they are solidly built one level ramblers and continue to be extremely popular.  The picture below is representative of how the original homes looked, but many of them have had additions.
They are within walking distance of the Hollin Hall Shopping Center which is the only shopping center in the Fort Hunt Area. Fairfax County Connector Bus to the Huntington Metro operates on Fort Hunt Road.
Homes most recently have sold for $450,000.

As soon as you pass the Mount Vernon Mansion you are less than 5 minutes from Mount Vernon Forest.  If you like a treed subdivision this is the spot for you.  Most of the  homes are on 1/2 acre lots and the elementary school is in the subdivision.
Due to its' proximity to the George Washington Parkway it provides an excellent commuting route to Alexandria, Crystal City, Pentagon and DC.  There is Fairfax County Connector Bus service to the Huntington Metro.
Fort Belvoir is approximately seven minutes away.  Homes are currently selling in the $550,000 to $600,000 range.  Mount Vernon Forest is a very popular community … (2 comments)

mount vernon: WAYNEWOOD Alexandria Mount Vernon Fairfax County VA Real Estate - 01/11/08 07:44 PM

The first of 700 homes in Waynewood were delivered in the early 60's.  They were extremely well crafted by Gosnell Builders.
A very attractive feature is that many of the split level homes have a fourth upper level which is a walk-in standup attic.  Of course, many of them have now been finished into additional living space.
Waynewood Elementary is located within the subdivision.  Although it was a futuristic concept in the beginning it is still highly valued and was a prototype for similar schools in later subdivisions.
The Waynewood Swim Club is also an integral part … (0 comments)

mount vernon: RIVERSIDE ESTATES Alexandria Mount Vernon Fairfax County VA Real Estate - 01/09/08 07:34 AM

Riverside Estates has remained popular ever since the first homes were delivered in the mid-60's.
Convenience and the proximity of schools, shopping and recreational facilities are the key to their continued public acceptance.

mount vernon: GEORGE WASHINGTON'S GRIST MILL - 01/07/08 02:00 PM

If you've never seen an 18th century grist mill in operation,  the reconstructed George Washington Grist Mill is a fascinating place.
Washington's first ownership of a grist mill occurred when he inherited Mount Vernon from the widow of his half-brother, Lawrence. Its' primary purpose was to provide wheat and corm meal for area farmers and the Mount Vernon Estate.
In 1771, Washington had a new "merchant mill" built and began commercial milling operations selling flour and corn meal up and down the East Coast and as far away as Portugal.  The mill was razed in 1850 and was bebuilt by the Commonwealth in 1933 … (4 comments)

mount vernon: WOODLAWN PLANTATION - 01/07/08 01:59 PM

There was no place in colonial America as grand as Woodlawn.  The Lewises of Woodlawn entertained lavishly.
Before his death in 1799, George Washington deeded 2,000 acres of the Mount Vernon estate to Major Lawrence and Eleanor "Nelly" Custis Lewis. Lawrence was the President's nephew and "Nelly" was Martha Washington's grandaughter.
Dr. William Thornton, first architect of the U.S. Capitiol designed the mansion where the family displayed a collection of objects in honor of their illustrious ancestors.  Woodlawn is open for tours and is an extremely popular site for private events.  It is convenient to Washington's Grist Mill and Mount Vernon Estate.

mount vernon: WHY WE LIVED IN MOUNT VERNON Alexandria Fairfax County VA - 01/04/08 08:05 PM

In 1974 we relocated to Virginia from Massachusettes.  After a very thorough tour of Fairfax County we decided Mount Vernon was the place that suited our needs.
My husband's office was in Crystal City and the trip in on the George Washington Parkway was a pleasure.  Additionally, it was convenient to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport when he had to travel.
We were within walking distance of the Mount Vernon Estate.  As we walked along Old Mount Vernon Road we passed a gate that provided an unobstructed view of the mansion identical to the one in this article.  It was also a short … (7 comments)

mount vernon: VILLAGE HARDWARE IN MOUNT VERNON - 12/31/07 08:54 PM

There was a time when you were comfortable in a hardware store since you felt like a neighbor and you probably were.  Small town hardware srores, similar to the local drug store with soda fountain, have all but disappeared from the American landscape.  Those days are not gone completely in Mount Vernon - Village Hardware in the Hollin Hall Center on Fort Hunt Road is thriving.  It believes in personal service and neighbors helping neighbors.
Larry Gray opened Village Hardware in 1979 and still believes in the business practices that made his store a success - 7-day-weeks of hard work have paid off for Larry and his … (8 comments)
