occoquan: Speechless Sundays - Separation Of Church And State - 10/17/10 08:44 AM
There are many churches here in Northern Virginia that date back to both the 18th and 19th century. I have a substantial photographic collection of them that I hope to post in a video at some point in time. The photo below is the Town Hall of Occoquan, VA, a small and quaint historic town on the Occoquan River in Prince William County. It is very obvious the 20th century building was, at one time, a church. Thank goodness the congregation moved out before the town staff moved in.
My Team has 34 years experience in Woodbridge, Dumfries, Manassas, Bristow, Gainesville, Haymarket (6 comments)
occoquan: Go East Ladies, Go East - 08/18/08 10:45 AM
Two of our favorite bakeries have always been "out west" - Grace's Pastries in Herndon and Moms Applie Pie Company in Sterling. Well, both of these "ladies" delicious baked goods can now be purchased in Prince William County.
The good news is that Grace's Pastries are now available at the Farmer's Market on Dale Boulevard in Dale City on Sunday mornings. The bad news is that the Farmer's Market is only open in Spring, Summer and early Fall. The rest of the year you can order online at Grace's Pastries She has received critical acclaim in The Washington Post and other (4 comments)
The lower of the 2 pictures above is an old aerial view of Occoquan that shows a boat dealership with moorings on the Occoquan River. That facility has been razed and replaced by a new residential building that can be seen in the upper picture. Those of us who have sold real estate in Occoquan for more than 30 years were initially concerned that the new building would detract from the historic appeal of Occoquan. Of course, so were the other business people in the area, but as the photo below shows it is very difficult, if not almost impossible, to distinguish (2 comments)
occoquan: Come To The Occoquan Craft Show 9/27 and 9/28 - 07/27/08 08:41 PM
The Fall 2008 Occoquan Craft Show will be on September 27 to 28. Both Mill and Commerce Streets will be alive with arts and craft vendors as well as food vendors. Of course, the Occoquan shops and restaurants will be open as well. The craft show draws large crowds each time it is held. Another important event this year the OCCOQUAN RIVER FESTIVAL . This is the first river festival and it includes events in the Belmont Bay Community as well as the Occoquan Regional Park located across the river in Fairfax County.

Historic Occoquan has two craft shows each year (Spring and Fall). The next craft show will be held on September 27 and 28, 2008. This is a copy of a 17th century map of the Belmont Bay area of Prince William County where a ferry crossed from Belmont Bay to Colchester (Harbor View) in Fairfax County. Potomac Path was the first north-south route through Virginia. It started in Boston and terminated in Williamsburg. After it crossed the Potomac from Fairfax County it went through Belmont Bay and south to Dumfries passing Rippon Lodge on its' way. The Mason family owned a 534 acre plantation named Belmont. Colonel Mason (great-grandfather of George Mason) started a ferry service in 1684 to facilitate the river crossing - it (0 comments)
Yes and it's for the birds!! There are numerous pilings at marinas, parks, yacht clubs and moorings at homes along the Occoquan River. We are fortunate to live along the shoreline of both the Potomac and Occoquan Rivers. While they provide our drinking water and recreational opportunities they also contain wetlands and an excellent supply of food for our feathered friends. Bald eagles, osprey and sea gulls are regular inhabitants. We also have a heron population as well. For the most part the activities at Occoquan Regional Park, Belmont Bay and the Town of Occoquan will not necessitate sitting, but a collapsible chair or (1 comments)
Actually, there are several best ways to get to and from Occoquan and Belmont Bay. First is by riding the sleek trains of the VIRGIiNIA RAILWAY EXPRESS. Just click on the Woodbridge station link for a location map and schedules. There is a multi-level parking garage. The station sits at the entrance to Belmont Bay and is about 10 minutes from Occoquan. The trains stop at stations that have access to METRORAIL Routes
Second is taking the OMNIRIDE COMMUTER BUSES. The bus stop is extremely well located for residents of both Occoquan and Belmont Bay - it is at the VDOT PARKING LOT at I-95 and (1 comments)
The House at 406 Mill Street in Occoquan was built in 1750 - it is the oldest residence in the historic town of Occoquan on the Occoquan River. At one time it was a residence for prominent local "personages". Residents relay stories of a gentle ghost who occasionally rearranges the furniture. Today, "The House is owned by a very proud sister-brother-wife team who have transformed it into "Tastefully Yours". Their belief is "Life is too short not to eat gourmet" Their product line includes chocolates, coffees, cheese, teas, jams, jellies, cookies, (1 comments)
This morning I was taking photos of the Occoquan and Belmont Bay areas and decided to drive into the Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge. I came upon an Osprey's nest (not that unusual along the shoreline of the Occoquan and Potomac Rivers), but this one was different. There was a chick in the nest which can be seen just peeking out from under the female. Although the parents were quiet, they kept a watchful eye on me. However, the chick was doing a little bird, "Cheep,Cheep,Cheep". Since I had not planned on distance photos I did not have my telephoto lens and I kept my distance (0 comments)
One of the highlights of this year for those of us who live along the Occoquan River is the upcoming Occoquan River Festival on July 27. The event commemorates the 400 year anniversary of John Smith's exploration of Chesapeake Bay and the watershed including the Occoquan River. His trip was made in a 23' shallop. The photo at the left is a working replica that is on display in the Maryland statehouse in Annapolis. It is being celebrated on both the Fairfax County and Prince William County side of the river. On our side of the river the majority (2 comments)
occoquan: WE'VE GOT TWO CENTER STREETS - 11/26/07 02:29 PM
One of them is in Old Town Manassas and one of them is in Occoquan. Since they are both incorporated that doesn't confuse the county government. More importantly, they are both very historical places and their Center Streets are loaded with quaint shops and inviting restaurants. Typical of most "Old Towns" you can stroll from one end to the other rather quickly unless you detour through the shops and eateries. The pictures below were taken in Manassas on Center Street.
The picture at the left is Church Street in Manassas, one of the two that run through the Old Town section.

occoquan: Occoquan, Prince William County Virginia 22125 September 2007 Real Estate Market Report - 10/18/07 02:15 PM
This is one of the market reports I publish on a monthly basis for OCCOQUAN. ZIP code 22125. Many REALTORS® prepare a report for all of Prince William County or Northern Virginia. In my opinion, that covers too broad an area to be meaningful. I do believe my approach will give you a much more realistic picture of the market in the area closest to your home. There were no homes settled in September 2007 The chart below shows all the Town Homes and Detached Homes available in Occoquan.
As you may know, bald eagles reside in 49 of our 50 states - none have made it to Hawaii. Those in the Northeast migrate south to Virginia in the winter months while those in the Southeast migrate north to Virginia in the hot summer months. Our normally mild climate is a primary reason in addition to the large supply of fish in our rivers, tidelands and lakes. There are numerous attractions to bring you to the Commonwealth in addition to the fishing. If you have never had the pleasure of enjoying our hospitality you (10 comments)
