George and Martha Washington's estate at Mount Vernon is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the National Capital Area. It is located at the southern end of the Mount Vernon Memorial Parkway about 10 miles south of Alexandria. Although the tourist entrance is located there the original entrance is not. Wills and VanMetre started construction on Saratoga in mid-1972. Many of the community features they offered are still available today in most planned communities. The one item that is not available, however, in homes close-in are large lots approximately 1/4 acre. The 2009 average net sales price for detached homes in Saratoga is 11% below the same period in 2009. The average decline for the same period in all of Fairfax County is 12%. Saratoga fared slightly better and is on the high side of the average.

For years those of us in Eastern Fairfax County have struggled with the inconvenience of the Fairfax County Parkway terminating at the Franconia-Springfield Parkway. Although it picks up again at Fullerton Road just west of I-95 and continues to Route 1 the problem lies in the fact the routes available to reconnect are not particularly efficient - actually they are a downright pain. Fortunately, the changes being brought about by BRAC in the Fort Belvoir and Engineering Proving Grounds area necessitate completing the missing link.
