springfield about: The Three "R's" What Would You Expect From A Schoolhouse? - 08/22/10 11:03 AM
RED This one room red schoolhouse was in use until 1939.
RESPECTED The fact that it survived postwar expansion in the Springfield area is a story unto itself. It is only a stone's throw from the hustle and bustle of the Fairfax County Parkway.
RESTORED It was purchased in 1950 by the Upper Pohick Community League - its' members restored it to its' original condition and continue to maintain it.

The information in quotes below was taken directly from the Hidden Pond Nature Center website where you can find more specific nformation regarding programs that are offered at the nature center. The important point of this post is that there is now a 2,000 foot trail that links the 25 acres of the Hidden Park Nature Center to Pohick Stream Valley Park - a meandering 7,000 acre park. It is one of the many reasons to consider making Springfield your home.

springfield about: Springfield, VA - It's A Commuting Hub - 03/15/09 03:42 PM
There are three primary concerns for people who relocate to the National Capital Area and decide to locate in Northern Virginia.
The first concern is the availability and cost of housing.  For those with children school quality is the second area of interest.  It should also be an area of interest for people without children since school quality has an impact on resale value. Commuting is the third area that is considered by a relocatee Springfield is Commuting Central for many North Virginia residents especially if you live east of Burke in Fairfax County and south of the Mount Vernon area of Fairfax County … (0 comments)

springfield about: Pohick Regional Library - Read About It Here And Then Go - 01/29/09 08:00 PM

Opened in 1987 the 24,400 square foot facility sits on the border between the Springfield and Burke areas of Fairfax Countyat 6450 Sydenstricker Road
It serves both communities with over 175,000 volumes.  There are reading programs for children of all ages and three book clubs.
Interestingly, the popular and well groomed grounds are maintained by a local group of gardeners.  Additionally, volunteers contribute 10,000 hours of service annually to the library.  The West Springfield Rotary Club (I'm a member) assists with a BLOOD DRIVE at the library every two months.  There is no doubt it is a loved "family member" … (0 comments)

springfield about: Which Springfield Schools Will My Children Attend? - 12/30/08 12:22 PM

When we moved to Fairfax County 34 years ago there was no internet to help us find our son's school.  We had to rely on information provided by the listing agent (sometimes incorrect) or call the Fairfax County School System and inquire about any property we may be interested in.  It made no difference whether we wanted to live in Springfield, Burke, Annandale or anywhere else in Fairfax County
Well, that certainly has changed.  Nowadays you just go to
SPRINGFIELD AND FAIRFAX COUNTY SCHOOL BOUNDARY LOCATOR, type in an address and voila - correct information is provided.
However, if you don't have an address … (2 comments)

springfield about: Kristi's Christmas In Springfield, Virginia - 12/07/08 03:54 PM
More than 20 years ago Kristi Brown of Springfield was killed in an automobile accident returning home from college.  Her parents, Bill and Karen Brown started "Kristi's Christmas" in her memory to bring Christmas joy to needy Fairfax County children.  Bill is a fellow member of the Rotary Club of West Springfield
Each year their goal is to aid 50 children of elementary school age.
This year the kids arrived at the Waterford in Springfield with their teachers and were served a full buffet breakfast through the generosity of the Waterford organization. At breakfast each child met a "buddy" who would be … (10 comments)

springfield about: BRAC Brings Needed Road Improvements To Eastern Fairfax County Virginia - 10/18/08 03:09 PM
For years those of us in Eastern Fairfax County have struggled with the inconvenience of the Fairfax County Parkway terminating at the Franconia-Springfield Parkway. Although it picks up again at Fullerton Road just west of I-95 and continues to Route 1 the problem lies in the fact the routes available to reconnect are not particularly efficient - actually they are a downright pain. Fortunately, the changes being brought about by BRAC in the Fort Belvoir and Engineering Proving Grounds area necessitate completing the missing link.
Construction of the final two miles of the Fairfax County Parkway will begin in late 2008 now that … (6 comments)

springfield about: It's That Time Of The Year Again- School's Open - 08/31/08 12:46 PM
It seems like only a few weeks ago that the school speed limit signs stopped blinking, kids stopped getting on and off the buses and the schoolhouses were closed.
Whether it was or wasn't is beside the point - they are now open.  The laws about stopping behind a school bus with blinking lights, driving at or under the school speed limit should be taken seriously by everyone.  It annoys me when I see a young mother or father with a toddler in the car drive above the speed limit in a school zone when the sign is blinking.  I wonder what they will expect … (0 comments)
