Oil, Natural Gas and Coal Production in the United States - 05/21/12 03:29 PM
I've been going back and forth with another blogger in reference to opening more federal land to drilling and what impact it would have on gas prices and in helping secure a future free of foreign energy dependence. I showed how oil production is at 8 year highs, that natural gas production is at record levels and that the US has exported more coal in 2011 then any other time in history. But, of course, I get the "open more land/ocean for more production." Then I came across this article in Forbes: "Would you believe that on this very date, just one, short year ago, the oil

What Can we Learn from The Cardboard Arcade? - 05/15/12 07:01 AM
This is a story about imagination and the power of social media, video and community. If you haven't heard about "Caine's Arcade", you'll be seeing it on your Facebook page soon. A 9-year-old built a cardboard arcade at his father's store but almost gave up on the project for lack of customers. Until a short film gave him all the publicity — and players — he could hope for. But this isn't just about a cute neighborhood kid with an entrepreneurial spirit, but the power of video that has created this sensation. Enjoy the video, but remember it's the filmmaker that deserves a lot

Is Obama a Moderate? - 05/11/12 01:14 PM
My Republican friends keep calling Obama a socialist. I keep asking them to provide proof of these socialist policies. And I keep saying that the Obama Administration is very moderate and in some cases, right of center. Thanks to Ezra Klien for writing story about the moderation of the current presidency. Political scientist Keith Poole released a study that probably cheered the White House. According to Poole’s highly respected classification system, Obama is the most moderate Democratic president since World War II. Which raises a question: How can Obama simultaneously be one of the most divisive and most moderate presidents of the past

The Pine Barrens - 05/10/12 08:33 AM
The Pine Barrens, also known as the Pinelands, is an enormous and all-encompassing tract of open space that covers 1.1 million acres, or 22 percent of New Jersey's land area. Visitors to the Pinelands can explore old, abandoned towns, see the restored Batsto Village or hike the numerous wooded trails. There are endless opportunities for boating, cycling, canoeing, fishing, hiking, hunting and horseback riding. Check into one of the many campgrounds and explore the Pinelands. Although the Pine Barrens envelop a number of interesting towns, if you want to experience the other worldly beauty of the quiet, pine-filled forests, you’ll want

Is the Conservative-GOP Marriage Over? - 05/08/12 05:50 AM
Pretty good opinion piece on Romney, the Republican Party and Conservatism by Craig Shirley who is an author and conservative public affairs consultant. He is best-known as the author of two critically praised bestselling books on Reagan. Though I think Shirley glosses over some of Reagan's shortcomings, he does make a compelling case that the Republican Party is not a "conservative" party they are simply a 'political' party and nothing more. Excerpt: "It should come as no surprise that the Republican National Committee has been “covertly” supporting Mitt Romney throughout the primaries, as POLITICO recently “revealed.” It was the worst-kept secret in

"Gentlemen, we have run out of money. It is time to start thinking." - 05/04/12 05:25 AM
There is no debate that America needs to get it's financial house in order. The debate starts on what parts of the budget should we cut and on whom we should raise taxes, if it all. Should we cut Medicare? Medicaid? Education? Social Security? Infrastructure? Defense? Should we raise taxes on the super-wealthy? The middle class? The poor? "Gentlemen, we have run out of money. It is time to start thinking." is a quote from Sir Ernest Rutherford, winner of the Nobel Prize in Nuclear Physics; nothing could be more true and is the essence of this new book on an America in
