Barnegat High School Fishing Club’s ninth annual Fishing Flea Market on Saturday, Dec. 9. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Barnegat High School.
Admission is $4. Children 12 and younger enter free of charge.
“Last year we had close to 500 people attend,” said club adviser Brett Taylor, who pointed out that all proceeds benefit the club, comprised of students in grades nine through 12.

Science Saturdays at the LBIF: For the 11th consecutive winter, the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts & Sciences will host a series of interactive, hands-on presentations open to the public. Science Saturdays are held weekly 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Jan. 14 through April 29 at the LBIF, 120 Long Beach Blvd., Loveladies. Each session presents a scientific, environmental or sustainability issue that affects the shore community and the Barnegat Bay. A light breakfast will be provided by A Little Bite of Italy in Surf City. Foundation members are free. Nonmembers are asked for a $5 donation.

There was a time, a hundred-plus years ago, when one could take a boat from Southern Ocean County to the southern tip of Long Beach Island. Perhaps we are at the beginning stages of the return of the Tuckerton to Beach Haven Ferry Service...or at least a shuttle.
The next Seaport ferry rides will come this fall, when the county Department of Parks & Recreation plans to loan its pontoon boat to the Seaport during the annual Ocean County Decoy & Gunning Show, Sept. 24 and 25.

Just when you "think you know" anything about fish and their behavioral traits, temp ranges, etc and Wham! Schools in and class has begun! This week the charter boat "Reel Fantasea" saw what is probably the best inshore COD FISHING in 20-years! Yes, that's right... CODFISH!... as in the fish that industrialized the world.

Mantoloking Yacht Club (Mantoloking) and Bay Head Yacht Club (Bay Head) are co-hosts for the 2011 U.S. Junior Women's Doublehanded Championship for the Ida Lewis Trophy, a US SAILING National Championship event. Forty teams will race in Club 420s this Tuesday through Thursday, July 12-14 on Barnegat Bay.
Among this year's contenders are Holly Tullo (Staten Island, N.Y.) and her crew Haley Fox (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.). Tullo and Fox attempt to improve on their third place finish in last year's championship. Water temperatures in Barnegat Bay are on the rise and as a result fishermen in these waters are starting to see more variety in the species available for hook and line.
Barnegat Bay has also seen blues move in. This fish have been reported between 3 to 5 pounds and have worked their way up to the Toms River, the flats behind Island Beach State Park and Bay Head.
