Massachusetts Celebrates Patriots Day - April 16, 2012

Here in historic Massachusetts, the third Monday of the month of April is set aside for celebrating the anniversary of Paul Revere's ride and the battles of Lexington and Concord.  Known as Patriot's Day, this Monday holiday is earmarked by several longstanding traditions.
The most well-known event is, of course, the Boston Marathon.  This 26-mile race from Hopkinton to Boston draws all kinds of people, from elite athletes to fund-raising bandits.  Residents along the race route set up bleachers and hold all-day parties, cheering on the runners as they … (1 comments)

Tick Alert for 2012:  Extra Caution Required

Living in the Northeast part of the country, we are always on watch for ticks.  These are the tiny critters that transmit Lyme disease to humans, dogs, and other mammals.
According to The Wall Street Journal, 2012 is expected to be a high alert year for tick activity.  Warm winter temperatures and decreased low field mice population are two of the primary causes of the increased potential for finding a tick on yourself or your pets.  I can vouch for that:  In the middle of March, after raking leaves, my husband … (4 comments)

August 2011:  Mid-summer and the picking is easy, especially if you visit Ragged Hill Orchard  in West Brookfield, MA.  Located atop a country hill, Ragged Hill Orchard provides a wonderful place to escape and wander the hills.  This time of year, the blueberries are ripe and ready, and the red raspberries are sweet and at peak.
On my recent visit to Ragged Hill, we filled buckets of plump berries.  The orchard owners provide buckets with roped … (5 comments)

Dairy Queen stores throughout the United States and Canada will celebrate Miracle Treat Day on August 11, 2011.  For every Blizzard treat sold that day, Dairy Queen will donate $1.00 to the Children's Miracle Network (CMN) Hospitals.  What a delicious way to raise funds for this important cause.
The Children's Miracle Network Hospitals includes 170 hospitals in North America.  RE/MAX is a long-time supporter of CMN, and RE/MAX associates have raised over $110 million for CMN.

Triathlon Training: Coming Down the Home Stretch

In early May, I made the decision to participate in the 2011 Danskin Triathlon in Webster, MA.  This is an annual event that draws thousands of women around New England.  It is a huge fund raiser for breast cancer research, and also celebrates those who are survivors of cancer.  Women of all ages and abilities join in to challenge themselves.
This triathlon consists of a 1/2 mile swim, 12 mile bike, and 3 mile run.  This is considered a Sprint triathlon, the shortest of various triathlon races.
My race is on … (10 comments)

Alert! Massachusetts Highways are Jammed with Summer Travelers

Driving down the Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90) at mid-day today, it was obvious that summer holiday traffic was already in full force.  The toll booths were slowed down, the on-ramps were busy, and the rest stop had a line-up for parking spaces.
People have wasted no time in getting packed and started on their summer holidays.
What does this mean?  For anyone traveling into and out of Massachusetts for the next two months, be prepared for slow speeds and waiting in line.  The Mass Turnpike is a major travel artery, bringing … (7 comments)

Just Pure Fun:  Virgin America Launches #nerdbird

Time for an attitude adjustment.

After a month of slogging in the trenches, coping with tornadoes, testy tempers, and tough triathlon training, the sun has come out and I've decided it is time to add some fun to my blogging.  Time to venture out from under the rain hood and look for some bright spots in the stratosphere.  Time to celebrate innovation and just pure fun.
Care to join me?
To kick off this twist in outlook, I am sharing with you an article about Virgin America, which recently … (5 comments)

Down and Dirty at Hyland Orchards - Sturbridge MA

June 11, 2011:  Today was the Socks for Siberia Festival at Hyland Orchards.  This year I participated in the "Rock Your Socks Off" Trail Run through the orchards, and what a blast.  This was a trail race up and down the rows of apple trees and into the woods surrounding the orchards.  Having had rain all morning, the trail was slippery, squishy, and muddy.  We ran up slopes, through rocky ruts, and over logs.  I finished the race covered in mud from the knees down, finding cover under the pavilion before … (3 comments)

31 Day Challenges:  Some Pain, Plenty of Gain

Today is May 31st, and this day marks the end of two great challenges for me.
First, is the end of the 31-Days of May Blogging Challenge.  The goal was to simply write at least one blog post per day, excluding market reports and property listings (unless such posts included outstanding local information).  I've done several of these challenges before, and there are days that the writing comes easy, and there are days when I am starting into a blank screen at 11:30 pm.
But the benefits far outweigh the pain in such … (10 comments)

Home Sellers: Do You Know How Your Agent's Marketing is Working?

When you list your home for sale with a real estate agent, you place a lot of trust in that professional.  You expect that your agent will know the best ways to reach out to the buyers in the market, and the best way to position your property in the market.
In a slow market, it may seem that your agent is doing very little to sell your property.  If you have had only a few showings, you may start to wonder what your agent's strategy is for getting … (7 comments)

Spring Rain Equals Wet Basements

We have had our share of precipitation this year, with record snowfalls and now week-long rains.  The constant moisture requires diligent checking on one's home to make sure no water is seeping into the house.  In particular, heavy rains can cause problems in the basement.  Even homes that never had issues with water in the basement may start to see some small areas of seepage.
If you happen to notice water coming into the basement of your home, here are some steps you can take to reduce the dampness:
1.  Clean your gutters.  Often, gutters … (7 comments)
