seniors: Aging in Place - 10/25/09 08:55 AM
Options for seniors are to move or not to move.
Not moving, or staying at home takes a lot of planning.   Attachment to a home, neighborhood, friends or  family nearby are reasons not to move.  Aging in place simply means not having to move from one's present residence in order to secure necessary support services in response to changing personal needs. "Aging in place" is living where you have lived for many years, or living in a non-healthcare environment.
A significant concern as people grow older is that they may have to leave their home. This would mean leaving behind a comfortable … (2 comments)

seniors: ECHO Cottage Housing Helps Families Stay Closer - 10/15/09 08:51 AM
An ECHO (Elder Cottage Housing Opportunities) unit is often a separate, small, manufactured home added in the side or backyard of a single-family house - usually an adult child's house.  It can also be an apartment within the main house or added onto the main structure.   Older parents can then live near their children but not with them.
ECHO is an ideal answer for many families. It allows older adults to get the support they need while all can stay independent in their own homes. It gives everyone the privacy they may desire.
ECHO units permit closeness without sacrificing self-reliance or … (0 comments)

seniors: A nursing facility in Albany, Oregon - 09/07/09 07:55 PM
I have been checking out senior facilities in Corvallis but hadn't gotten around to Albany yet. This past week I had the sad job of helping research an appropriate place for my uncle.
Eugene Davidson, ex POW of the Japanese, survivor of the Bataan Death March.  90 years old and just in the past year stricken with Alzheimers to the point that his wife can no longer care for him at home.  The Corvallis Manor won't take him and the VA won't pay for Regent Court.  So, to Albany we went.  Timberview is on 6th Street right across the street from … (0 comments)

seniors: Avamere Heart of the Valley closing - 06/16/09 12:06 PM
This care center will be closing as soon as the current residents can be placed in other residences.  Corvallis Manor is now the only short term skilled nursing facility in Corvallis.  While Corvallis Manor is an excellent nursing home with a better than wonderful physical therapy team, it seems to bad that there is not going to be a choice of where to go for short term rehab.  Unless you go to Albany or further.  Heart of the Valley is the sight of the old Corvallis Hospital.  I'm telling on myself, but both of my children where born in that hospital.  I wonder what … (1 comments)

seniors: Timberhill Place - 03/18/09 09:57 AM
Timberhill Place is an assisted living Community.  When I went there I received a folder of information but no one was available to show me around or answer questions.  Since I have no thoughts or opinions I will just tell you what the brochure says. They do accept Medicaid and seem to offer the same services the other facilities offer.  If one is able to get out and about on their own, it is quite close to to the aquatic center and shopping.  They also have a shuttle that go out regularly. They offer month to month rent.

seniors: Conifer House - 03/16/09 10:59 AM
i got a really great reception at Evergreen Conifer House.  Audry took me on a tour, showing me rooms and explaining how everything works. This is a residential care facility where the level of assistance ranges from minimal to comprehensive. Breakfast is cooked to order from 5:30-9:00 am with three meals being served daily.  Everyone I met there was very helpful when talking to me. The building clean and cheery.  This facility does allow for Medicaid payments.  I was liking what I saw here.

seniors: Avamere Heart of the Valley - 03/13/09 10:52 AM
Heart of the Valley is a Skilled Care and Nursing Care Facility in Corvallis, Oregon.  One of the first things that caught my eye were the finch aviary and the larger birds in cages.  They were so cheery and welcoming.  There was a sofa in front of the aviary where one could sit and watch the happy little birds go about their daily lives.  There was also a fish tank and I saw one big cat napping on a chair.  I spoke with Hollie Martin who is the director of social services. She helps provide long range planning for the clients individuals … (0 comments)

seniors: Samaritan Village - 03/12/09 11:56 AM
Samaritan Village is about senior living with dignity.  This is an independent living housing facility in Corvallis Oregon. All residents need to fall within income limits since this is a HUD project.  It is affordable and located in a residential neighborhood.  Besides the independent apartments, there is a center building which houses a nice lounge area.  Also, there is a dining room where a large mid-day meal is served.  While checking it out I had the opportunity to visit with two lovely ladies who were spending some time in the lounge area at a table where a picture puzzle was in progress.  … (0 comments)

seniors: Heron Pointe - 03/09/09 10:57 AM
Located in Monmouth, Oregon Heron Pointe is a retirement and assisted living residence.  They have cottages with garages along with their apartments.  It is a beautiful building, very light and cheery with lots of open spaces.  They work with medicaid and operate on a month to month rent with no buy in.  The community is invited to get involved and are invited to activities including a once a month Sunday brunch ($5.00) and weekly bingo.  Meals are served restaurant style and the dining room is very spacious.

seniors: Corvallis Caring Place - 03/06/09 12:04 PM
Corvallis Caring Place is an assisted living facility.  It seemed bright and cheerful when I visited.  Their staff covers the full range of needs and services.  Each apartment has individual temp controls for heating and cooling, kitchenette, private bath with walk-in shower and emerge call systems.  This is one of very few ALF's in Corvallis that accepts Medicaid.  I am still visiting places and will post on any others I come across that also accepts Medicaid.  I

seniors: Regent Court, Corvallis Oregon - 03/04/09 03:51 PM
Regent Court is a memory care center.  It is locked and totally secure to keep wanderers safe.
I visited Regent Court and saw a facility with living area "communities or neighborhoods" of no more than 12 residents each.  It is strucdtured so that the residents can stroll around freely both inside and out. There are family type dining areas, loosely scheduled meals and housekeeping and laundry service.
I liked the peaceful and homelike feel of the building.  The staff were friendly and seemed very caring.  It was clean and did not smell institutional.  I would recommend this over a nursing home or Assisted … (0 comments)

seniors: Adult Day Services - 03/02/09 01:12 PM
Corvallis, Oregon has a great place called Grace Center. www.grace-adultdayservices.org  Their goals are to provide respite and support for family and other caregivers.  I visited this amazing place and cannot tell you how impressed I am with their state of the art facility. I would strongly encourage anyone in the area to check it out and refer them to someone you know who might need this kind of help.  A husband or wife caring for their spouse or a working child caring for a parent could well benefit from having a safe place to leave a loved one whether for a couple … (1 comments)
