What is change?

With the political election on the horizon and all this talk about change, I have to wonder, what does change mean? I don't think Republicans or Democrats or (anyone else for that matter) have the market cornered so I began to think about it. I don't want this to be a political blog, that's not what this is about, it's more reflective. My husband and I are involved in our community, and sometimes it's hard not to think, why bother? No one appreciates it. This brings me back to change. We feel we can make a difference.

I think that change starts with each individual person. Change does not have to be one big action, it can be hundreds or thousands of little ones. I can't change you but I can change myself.

I can change my behavior to be more optimistic instead of pessimistic. Instead of focusing on what's wrong with my community, I can be excited about what's right with it. I can stop judging people's intentions and instead put myself in their position and try to understand their intentions. I can be more involved instead of throwing stones from the sidelines.

I can participate and make things change but I can't sit back and expect someone to do it for me. Even though, I may feel like it's an uphill battle, I would rather keep trying than do nothing at all.
