It’s that time of year again!!! Tapps Island Annual Garage Sale Saturday & Sunday, June 2nd & 3rd. The hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

There will be a $5.00 fee per carload from dawn to 3:00 PM, on Saturday only for vehicles entering the Island without a current, teal holographic Tapps Island sticker or guest pass. The $5.00 passes will be issued to all paying visitors entering Tapps Island. Vehicles must park in designated areas only. A tow truck will be on site and will tow improperly parked vehicles at owner’s expense.

Placing of Flags, Thursday, May 24

Flags will be placed at the markers of veterans on May 24. Anyone is invited to come help the VFW as there are many flags to be placed.

Flags will be placed by markers that are designated as veterans. If someone has a loved one at the Sumner City Cemetery who also served in the military but is not noted on the marker, they can get a flag from the cemetery office to place by the marker.

Proposed Closure of McAlder Facility

The renovation of Maple Lawn Elementary will be completed this summer, and the school will reopen to students and staff at the start of the 2012-13 school year. Maple Lawn Elementary is currently housed at the McAlder facility during construction. The District’s elementary student enrollment is just enough for eight schools. When Maple Lawn reopens, there will be nine elementary facilities. With no scheduled use for the McAlder facility, the Board has begun the closure process to remove McAlder from the District inventory for instructional purposes.

Many districts take action to close schools when changes in enrollment create a surplus, and some districts have closed, reopened and closed the same schools within the last thirty years due to fluctuations in the number of students. Board action to close a school does not signify a permanent closure, but is an essential function when the facility will not be used for instructional purposes.

At the March meeting, the Board approved a policy to allow for closure of a facility. The Board will then review an analysis detailing potential impacts of a closure at its regular April meeting. Two public hearings are scheduled to accept comments on the closure under consideration, prior to taking any action.

Today is a special day here in Bonney Lake. It is the Eastown Gateway Sign Unveiling

The City Council of the City of Bonney Lake will hold a Special Meeting for the unveiling the newly installed Eastown Gateway sign on Tuesday, May 15th at 5:00 p.m. The sign is located at the intersection of State Route 410 east and 234th street E. Parking on site is limited so if possible please carpool. Parking will be off of 234th Ave E south side of SR 410 E, on the first driveway on the right. The special meeting for the sign unveiling will be followed by the regular City Council Workshop at 5:30 p.m. at the Justice Center (9002 Main Street East).

The Eastown Gateway Sign was originally intended to be installed at the Western City gateway behind the “Bird and the Boy” statue at Ascent Park. However, the City later opted for a better sign at the main gateway and reserved this sign for the Eastern gateway once the SR410 Eastown widening project was completed. Public Works and Facilities staff members combined efforts to complete the project.

THINKING OF HOLDING AN EVENT IN SUMNER?

If you’d like to hold an event in the City of Sumner, there are a couple of things the City can do to help.

First, you may want to see if your event fits the City Codes for events. Check the Municipal Code and go to Chapter 12.52 for Special Events.

Second, fill out a special events permit and return to the Permit Center. The Center will route your form through all appropriate departments to double check that your proposed event does fit all City codes and safety requirements.

Once your event is approved, have a great time celebrating in the City of Sumner!

Action Day Camp Summer 2012

For Grades K-5 (2012-2013 School Year).

Register now for Action Day Camp for a wonderful summer! Day camps features organized games, arts & crafts, board games, movies, field trips, swimming and bike days. Try our camp one week and you will want to come back!

Each week of camp has a theme which carries over to the field trip and activities for the week. Choose from “School’s Out for Summer,” “Animal Planet,” “Rock n’ Roller Skate,” “A Pirate’s Life For Me,” “Crazy Concoctions & More,” “Out of this World,”"Let the Games Begin,” “Survivor, Australia,” “Extreme H20,” and our last week “Where the Wild Things Are.”

Cost: Varies from $25 – $125 per week
Camp Hours: 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Drop Off: 6:30 – 9:00 AM
Pick Up: 4:00 – 6:00 PM
Dates: Camp will run from June 22 – August 24

It’s that time of year, moms and dads everywhere are saying, already??? sending our little one to Kindargarten? I remember those days, be prepared for that bittersweet day next September.

Kindergarten Registration!!!

The Sumner School District offers full-time and part-time kindergarten classes. Part-time students attend school all day on Mondays, Tuesdays and alternating Wednesdays (Red kindergarten) OR all day on Thursdays, Fridays and alternating Wednesdays (Blue kindergarten). Some elementary schools offer a tuition-based, full-time program on a space available basis for children who qualify. Full-time kindergarten students attend school every day and have the same school calendar as students in grades 1-5. Students enrolled in full-time kindergarten receive extra instruction time to learn basic skills for first grade. All children enrolled in the full-time program must qualify through participation in a screening process held later in the spring.

Full-time Kindergarten Rates
Registration Deposit (applied to June tuition): $100
Full Pay Monthly Tuition: $325

All children enrolling for kindergarten for the coming school year must be five years old by August 31, prior to the start of school. When registering a child for school, families should bring:

Proof of child’s birth date (birth or hospital certificate, passport);
Immunization information and child’s health history; and
Names and phone numbers of parents, physician, and an emergency contact.

Families should contact their neighborhood school for registration information, or download a packet from the District Web site. Completed registration forms should be returned to the neighborhood school.
