In effect, there was only one rally with both groups, and probably many undecided, meeting simultaneously. A speakers platform was set up on a flat bed trailer. At highest attendance there appeared to be somewhere between 150 and 200 people present. The weather was pleasant, mostly a slight overcast … (10 comments)

The Biker, The Lion, The Little Girl and NY Times - Some Saturday Humor - 08/29/09 08:15 AM
This was sent to me by a friend. Just thought I would share. Hope you enjoy.

Harley rider is passing the zoo, when he sees a little girl leaning into the lion's cage. Suddenly, the lion grabs her by the cuff of her jacket and tries to pull her inside to slaughter her, right under the eyes of her screaming parents.
The biker jumps off his bike, runs to the cage and hits the lion square on the nose with a powerful punch.
Whimpering from the pain the lion jumps back letting go of the girl, and the biker brings … (24 comments)

We Went There in Tears, We Left There With Smiles - Take the Time to Care Today! - 08/28/09 09:30 AM
Yesterday I wrote a post about the WSB radio Aflac Cancer Center Care-A-Thon. While on my way back to my office from an appointment, I was listening to Neil Boortz talking with a mother, Anastasia, and her son, Kenny, about the treatments he was getting at the Center. It was a very moving discussion and her closing comments almost brought me to tears.
Anastasia talked about how scared she was for her son, and the fears and terrors she felt as she entered the Cancer Center for the first time. And how she felt when they came out. Her testimony:

The Last of Four Brothers is Gone - 08/26/09 07:42 AM
Edward Kennedy, Senator from Massachusetts passed away last night, losing the battle against brain tumors. He was the youngest of four brothers and the only one to have died a natural death. His oldest brother, Joseph, was killed in WWII. John & Robert were both assassinated.
He was the third longest serving senator in U.S. history, having been in senate since 1962. He was a very colorful character, to say the least, both famous and infamous for his accomplishments and foibles in and out of government. He was a champion of civil rights, but also the presumed villain, by many, in … (20 comments)

Good News? Case Schiller Home Price Index Up in 2nd Quarter, But....... - 08/25/09 03:10 PM
Existing home sales prices rose in Q2/2009 according to Standard & Poors Case  Schiller Home Price Index. According to the index, prices rose 3% over Q1/2009. However, they are still down 15% from the same period last year and 30% from 2003.
When coupled with 4 months in a row of increasing home sales many are calling this an end to the housing slump. However, David Blitzer (have no idea if he is related to Wolf) of Standard & Poors and Robert Schiller, one of the creators of the index, have reservations. According to Diana Quick, in her CNBC report "Home … (8 comments)

It Appears That There Might Some Reason to Be Concerned With Government End of Life Counseling! A VA Death Book? - 08/21/09 09:08 AM
I read a Wall Street Journal Article yesterday by Jim Towey entitled The Death Book for Veterans. Mr. Towey's article was a bit disturbing. He states that this is required to be distributed to all VA patients, not just those who are aged. He did not have a lot of good to say about this 52 page booklet, entitled Your Life Your Choices, that is supposedly a set of instructions for how to prepare a living will (it says so right on the cover).
So, in the interests of fairness, I read the booklet for myself to see what it really … (22 comments)

New on the Market, Gravel Bed in Clear Flowing Stream - Perfect for Mallards With a Growing Brood of Ducklings! - 08/20/09 12:55 PM
I was reading a post today by Cynthia Bartch, it was all about the new Rainmaker tag that is displayed over some of our photos. But, this post is not about that. In the post, Cynthia uses the word crinoline, which if truth be told, if I were handed a pile of it I wouldn't recognize. But, like with most of us, I immediately associated it with a Simon and Garfunkle song that I have not hear, or thought of, in years, although it is one of my favorites.
And then I realized that so many words, used here, and elsewhere, … (4 comments)

Thankful Thursdays - Mike's 52 Weeks of Thanksgiving - A Milestone & Some Providence - 08/20/09 08:14 AM
Yep, yesterday was a milestone for me, a landmark birthday, the first birthday that did more than just add notches to my age stick in 41 years. I became eligible for social security. Ok, only partial social security, after all, I am now only 62 years old.
So first, I am thankful that I actually made it this long. 41 years ago, when I turned 21 and could vote for the first time (yes, at one time you had to be 21), when I could legally drink (most states you had to be 21 then, now, it is all states) and … (13 comments)

It's Not About Quality Health Care: Obama, Dems Want to Cut Successful Program for 20% of Senior Medicare Recipients - 08/17/09 07:11 PM
President Obama, and many Democrats in congress want to cut a very successful senior medical program, Medicare Advantage. It currently provides service to about 20% of seniors on medicare. It is that piece of the program that is contracted out to private insurance companies, and, yes, it does cost about 14% more than standard medicare. According to the president Medicare Advantage is wasteful and amounted to "giveaways that boost insurance company profits but don't make you any healthier."
But is that really the case? Not according to a study that shows that those enrolled in Medicare Advantage, although they use … (6 comments)

Some Simple Suggestions for Improving Health Care Access in the U.S. Without a Government Take Over, Part 3. - 08/17/09 02:09 PM
This is part 3 in a series of steps we can take that I fell will both decrease health care costs (or at least slow the increase) as well as make it more accessible, and, most importantly, at least to me, prevent a government takeover of our health care system.
For this installment, I am going to refer to a Wall Street Journal article by John Mackey, CEO of Whole Foods. He has developed an 8 point process for health care reform. Here it is:
Remove the legal obstacles that slow the creation of high-deductible health insurance plans and health savings … (8 comments)

I got a call from Afghanistan yesterday, and I think I have an idea that's a win-win for America! Let's give returning veterans something more than a handshake. - 08/13/09 01:03 PM

This is a fantastic idea. We need to do more for these men and women and Richard has a couple of fantastic ideas.

Via Richard Weisser Coweta Fayette Real Estate ERA United Realty:
I got a call yesterday from a national guardsman currently deployed in Afghanistan. He was calling about one of my listings, and asked for more information.
First of all, I thanked him for his service. Second of all we talked about the purchase of his first home. I excitedly began to tell him about the $8000 first time homeowners tax credit.
Oops, there's only one problem. He … (17 comments)

Thankful Thursdays - Mike's 52 Weeks of Thanksgiving - Some Downtime in the Smokies - 08/13/09 08:15 AM
My wife ended up swapping some work days with one of her coworkers. That ended up giving her some extra days off in a row. We decided to take advantage of this boon and get some unscheduled downtime in the mountains where temperatures, day and night, woud be a bit cooler. So, we packed a couple of overnight bags, took the dog to her sister's and headed up to Gatlinburg, 3 days and two nights of nothing but relaxation.
Nancy shopped a bit, I played golf, well, at least I went to the golf course, drove a cart around and attempted … (18 comments)

Some Simple Suggestions for Improving Health Care Access in the U.S. Without a Government Take Over, Part 2. - 08/09/09 04:36 PM
This is part 2 of a series on improving access to health care and recuding the overall costs. Because this was both on my list and also appeared to be a hot button on several others who responded to the original post, #2 on my list of recommendations is honest tort reform that will:
reduce the cost of malpractice insurance, reduce the number of frivolous lawsuits continue to protect those litigants that really do have a case. Additionally, it should set reasonable caps on judgements, while still being equitable to the damaged parties.
I know this will upset many, especially any … (21 comments)

Just What the Heck is Butt Dust? - 08/08/09 02:45 PM
A friend of mine sent me the following. I thought I would add this incident to it.
When he was about 3,  there was a restaurant on Highway 29 between Vallejo and Napa. It had an aviary attached to it and large windows that opened into the restaurant for viewing. We went there one evening when my son was about 3 and got a table next to a window so that the kids could watch the birds. My son was checking things out, commenting here and there when a duck started laying eggs.  He yelled out "Mom, Dad! That bird is … (22 comments)

Some Simple Suggestions for Improving Health Care Access in the U.S. Without a Government Take Over, Part 1. - 08/07/09 06:36 PM
It is apparant that the majority of Americans believe that there are some issues with health care costs, while the majority of Americans are satisfied with their health care. Also, it is evident, from poll after poll that the majority of Americans do not want what is being proposed by the president and by congress.
So, what can be done to change the availability of coverage? What can be done to control the increase of costs in health care?
This will be the first in a series of some things that I believe will help resolve the issues with health care … (24 comments)

Thankful Thursdays - Out of the Muck of a Funk - 08/06/09 08:26 AM
I admit it, I have been in some kind of a moody funk the last couple of weeks. Don't know what got me there, don't know what kept me there, but I had a very hard time being thankful, or, at least expressing thankfulness for anything, even though I knew that there were many things, during that period to be thankful for. To be honest, I was just feeling down and it was keeping me from acknowledging anything to be thankful for.
But, with some influence by several of you in the rain that had been in funks of your own … (5 comments)
